Praise for Mindfully Facing Disease and Death: 'These teachings invite us to integrate their guidance directly into the laboratory of our own meditation practice and life, in the spirit of deepinvestigation and inquiry. As committed meditation practitioners know first hand, there is no more worthy or meaningful introspective undertaking in the world, nor a more difficult challenge for human beings to adopt and sustain throughout life.' - From the Foreword, Jon Kabat-Zinn 'An invaluable and extraordinary resource on the profound teachings by the Buddha on dying, death, and grieving. Bhikkhu Analayo has given a great gift to all of us by bringing together in this book the compassionate wisdom of the Buddha on our mortality.' - Roshi Joan Halifax 'This is an indispensable book for serious students of Buddhism. An excellent book on Satipatthana meditation. I have learned a great deal from reading this book. It's a practical book, and not too overly theoretical. All the instructions are all clearly set out, and easy to understand. I do not believe that you have do all of the what the book suggests, but you can if you wish. As Analayo suggests, we should test all the suggestions and see which ones works best for us. This is certainly not the run of the mill kind of mindfulness book, but one with real depth and meaning, and one based on the authentic teachings of the Buddha.
The book also comes with audio files that offer meditation instructions, which can be downloaded from the publishes website. You can find the link in the introduction section of this book.

This is the third of a series of four books on the Satipatthana Sutra by Bhikkhu Analayo. I have all bought all four from Amazon.

The first, "Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization" was published in 2003.
The second, "Perspectives on Satipatthana" was published in 2013.
The third and this one: "Satipatthana Meditation: A Practice Guide" was published in 2018.
The Fourth, "Mindfulness of Breathing: A Practice Guide and Translations" was published in 2019.

"Satipatthana Meditation: A Practice Guide" is the practical culmination of Analayo's work. It is the book you need to take your meditation and mindfulness to the next level. If it had come out first, it would have been the first one I read and used.

Analayo's first two books "Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization" and "Perspectived on Satipatthana" are excellent resources for working with this book. However, they are only needed, if one wants to go into more detail. They came out first, I believe, because Analayo was developing his understanding of the Sutra.

The Fourth book "Mindfulness of Breathing" takes things a step further and so is useful for advanced meditators and for those of us looking to see where our practice may take us.

The quality of the paper used by Windhorse Publications is very high. The last two in particular have fold in front and back covers. Mine even came with bookmarks.

The first three books have a picture of the Buddha carved into a cliff. I take the different angle of each picture as a metaphor for Analayo looking at the Satipatthana Sutra in a slightly different way.

One reviewer called the book "Terrible" supposing the author was trying to impress us with his vocabulary. This is not true. Analayo is a scholar, so by necessity he goes into detail. And no, you don't need the first two books to understand and greatly benefit from this book. First read and practice the instructions in this book. Then if you want to deepen your understanding get the second book. Then if you are a real aficionado and into detail, get the first book.

Personally, I will read this book along side "Mindfulness of Breathing: A Practice Guide and Translations."

Thank you Bhikkhu Analayo for your dedication and hard work in putting out these amazing books and waiving your royalty payments which makes these books a great value.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book, too denseReviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on 24 January 2022

This book is unnecessarily complex. Analayo is an expert on this topic and has a lot of related research and expertise and publications. He quotes himself or alludes to his previous work as if one would have read those. I haven't. I am an experienced Theravada practitioner. I got a lot out of it, but it isn't an easy read.
