현대문명 위기 극복방안으로서의 인성 덕목 : ‘수덕(修德)’을 중심으로

본 연구의 목적은 그리스도교 영성의 덕목 중 하나인 수덕(修德)을 현대문명 문제 극복을 위한 방안으로 제시하는 데 있다. 산업혁명 이후로 인류는 자신의 복지를 위해서 최우선적으로 기술문명을 발전시켜 왔다. 그러나 이것은 새로운 환경위기 문제를 낳았고, 이는 기술문명만으로는 극복되지 않는 문제이다. 환경문제를 극복하기 위하여 보다 나은 생산방식과 소비방식, 그리고 정화방식을 개발하는 것도 중요하고, 앞으로도 지속해 나가야 한다.
그러나 이보다 더 중요한 것은 행복한 삶에 대한 사고와 삶의 방식을 전환시키는 것이다. 인류가 삶을 영위하는 데 있어 중요 덕목으로 간주해왔던 정신적·신앙적 요소에서 문제 극복방안을 찾아보는 것이 기술문명에서 한계에 도달한 인류에게 새 희망을 줄 것으로 생각한다.
이런 정신적·신앙적 요소 중 하나가 절제 및 수련의 의미를 내포하는 수덕이다. 인류가 오늘날과 같은 소비문화를 극복해내느냐 그렇지 못하느냐에 따라 인류 미래가 지속가능하느냐 그렇지 못하느냐가 결정된다고 할 수 있다. 인류의 미래를 희망할 수 있는 길을 열어 가는 작업은 우리 모두가 오늘날과 같은 소비문화를 자발적 절제와 수련으로 극복하는 데서부터 시작될 수 있다.
인류 역사에서 큰 미덕으로 간주되어 온 절제를 누구나 존중해야 하는 보편 덕목으로 의식화하는 작업은 오늘날 봉착해 있는 환경문제와 문명위기 문제를 극복하는 데 중요한 출발점이 될 수 있다. 절제는 모두가 양보를 해야 하는 어려움을 자발적으로 감내하는 것을 전제하는 것으로 실천하기가 쉽지 않다. 그래서 자발적 절제에 대한 면밀한 탐구와 실천방안에 대한 친절한 안내가 필요한 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to suggest one of the core virtues of Christian spirituality as a way to overcome modern civilization's problems. Since the Industrial Revolution, humankind has developed technology to promote its welfare. However, this has created a new environmental problem, which cannot be overcome with technology alone.
It is my hope that humankind will utilize spiritual and religious elements, virtues of humanity, to solve modern problems with our current civilization. In order to overcome environmental problems, it is necessary to develop better means of production, consumption and purification methods.
More urgent than this is a need for a change in the way we think and live our lives. Humanity, which has developed abundant materials, production methods, and increased consumption, will find clues to solve their problems by observing the lives of the people that live abundantly under simple material conditions.
One of the virtues we should examine is the virtue that enables us to have our own abilities. The consciousness of universal virtue, which is respecting the virtue of human history, can be an important starting point for overcoming the environmental problems that humankind is facing today. Suede is not easy to practice, because everyone assumes that it is difficult to make compromises. Therefore, I think that it is necessary to have a detailed inquiry about voluntary virtue and concrete guidance on the method.
