Gnosis, in the hands of Roberts Avens, is a perennial philosophy of the heart. This book provides a readable, uncomplicated, and reliable introduction to Gnostic thought in the works of Martin Heidegger and James Hillman.

As a psychological philosopher, Avens brings fresh meaning to the basic gnostic ideas about angels, salvation through knowledge, and the world as alive and ensouled.

Therapies that encourage personified images and ecology movements concerned with the soul in things can find a profound philosophical ground in this new Gnosis.

This is a dense read. But you know what you're in for with Heidegger in the title. Hillman's inclusion brings a clearly spiritual perspective to the text. An authority on mystical engagement, Hillman's philosophical grounding is a incisive compliment to the weighty ontological concerns of Heidegger. Avens' narrative is articulate and approachable. Ever careful of his language, Avens was attentive to nuances of meaning, quoting directly and liberally from primary sources. I made my way through the text slowly and deliberately; as should be expected. The margins of my copy are scattered with notations, questions, and references. For me, it was a thoughtful read.

I would suggest this book if you are confused about western dualism and you want to stay that way. I have been following Heidegger and Hillman for many years with the aim of understanding my mind.

Everything has an angel and everything has a personality. I couldnt agree more.
I am always talking to inanimate objects and imagining what they would say back to me now I feel justified in this habit.
Also if you like obtuse words like, isomorphic you are going to love this book. All kidding aside I really felt a kind of assusrance that my train of thought is somewhere near these two heavy thinkers and I am surrounded by angels. I don't think I will have to read another book, ever!
