To those wondering about the reference to Hinduism and its incorporation of Jesus, this claim is based on several contemporary movements in Hinduism, like the group assoicated with Sri Ramakrishna (d. 1886) who have indeed argued for Jesus as an Avatar. great video as always filip. at the end of the day, i think its fair to say that jesus did in fact exist as a person. whatever someone wants to think besides that depends on their own views. quick question, which was the first book of the new testament that mentioned jesus as the son of god or as divine? thanks and have a great day sir. @Nas PB Thanks! That depends on one's interpretation of the Gospels. As early as the Gospel of Mark (the earliest), he is called the Son of God, for example where God says "you are my beloved son" during the baptism. Where it first states that he is divine is hard to answer, what do we mean by divine? Most of the Gospels seem to imply that he is somehow divine, but not necessarly that he is God Himself. The youngest Gospel of John is the most clear on that stuff. Just in the first lines it claims that Jesus is the Word (logos) and thus a divine pre-creation principle.Read more

@Let's Talk Religion, please help, why does Christianity saddle itself with the god of the old testament when the God of the new testament seems incongruous with the old god. Indeed the old testament god seems to only love his chosen people and is spiteful, vengeful and murderous in comparison to the God of love and forgiveness for all in the new testament. The God of the new testament does not require animal sacrifice etc.

@Let's Talk Religion Not at all (I had to look up what Gnosticism means), I simply can't relate the God of the new and old testaments. The new testament God is about (to summarize) love one and other as you love yourself. This is in-congruent with the old testament god. I can't imagine the God of the new testament telling Moses to kill every man woman and child, in the holy land, as the holy land is meant for them (paraphrased). I hate the current age of identity politics and intersectionality, however, the old testament god is not inclusive, being the god only of the Jews. I have read and watched some other works on who wrote the first Gospel, one argument put forward and very compelling (to this non practicing catholic but still believer in God) on numerous levels is that Josephus was the author of the first (Mark's) gospel on behalf of the (Flavian) Romans; to quell the Jews who historically spurned accepting the gods of their conquerors and assimilation and were waiting for (and still are) an all conquering messiah. @Raverraver9999 Some of your claims have been substantiated but there is also the case of Yogananda who is considered a "modern day miracle." It was witnessed at the Forest Lawn Cemetery where his body was available for followers to see and show last respects.Yogananda was raised in the Hindu tradition as were most. Indians. He was a believer that basically all major religions are paths to the ONE ABSOLUTE GOD.He was beyond sectarian differences and discrediting other religions. He wrote an awesome book called Autobiography of a Yogi in which he mentioned quite a few miraculous people and events. He was a devotee of Jesus Krishna, etc.He was chosen to bring an ancient tradition called Kriya to the west as well as promote religious understanding. He started a fellowship called Self Realization which exists today. He was a true spiritual master in a line of spiritual masters. He gave examples of Catholics, Hidus, etc. who showed miraculous abilities. Many confirmed that his body showed no signs of decomposition for more than 21 days after his passing. His book is a classic and his life is a testimony of spiritual righteousness..Read more

@Damo Zoroastrianism was the religion of Cyrus the Great. He freed the Jews from captivity in Babylon and soon after financed and helped build the second temple in Jerusalem. Both religions served One God . Zoroastrianism was nearly wiped out by Alexander. It's earliest texts called the Vestas, and Gathas predated the Bible by centuries. It is very obvious how the Old Testament writings were influenced by Cyrus the Great from belief in angels, demons, to heaven, hell and the God Ahura Mazda having an evil adversary responsible for the material world and the sins and wickedness that exists. His name was Ahriman also Ahura Mazda.Zoroastrianism also speaks of an apocalyptic battle and coming of a Messiah after which the righteous destroy Angra Mainyu and his followers.Zoroastrianism was the progenitor to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. They were mostly wiped out by the Moslems when they invaded Persia. Many took refuge in India.Home of the earliest known religion and earliest known texts. The Vedas and Upanishads. They have a history of Ahimsa (non violence)and tolerance towards different religious beliefs. They have the Zoroastrians (now called Farsees) refuge as well as the Jews after Rome destroyed the second temple and later Christians who came to India with St. Thomas. They also give the Buddhists govt. Thank you very much for a balanced exploration of the topic. I belong to a Jewish movement that includes the Ebionites. I believe that he was a fully human, Jewish prophet, who was called by God to warn the Jewish people of the coming destruction in the year 70 CE. I believe that he spoke of the Kingdom of God to contrast this with the messianic kingdom of the Zealots. I believe that he felt that the Jewish people could be saved from annihilation by returning to the high ideals of the original Israelite faith ('The old wine is good enough'). A major problem in his ministry was the fact that the Pharisees taught that there were no more prophets. If they had accepted at least the idea of continued prophecy among the Jewish people, then there would have been no need to proclaim him a messiah, but since a messiah was the only type of person that the Pharisees would listen to, I think that the early Jewish followers of Yeshua made the fatal error to make him into a messiah. As a movement, we concentrate on the ethical teachings of Yeshua. If you examine this side of his teachings, they have a very uniform and discernible style, and I think that the person who said those things - whether it was Yeshua or someone else - THAT person existed. Our version of the New Testament - 'The Exhortations' - concentrates on his ethical teachings, rather than on him: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/168907650XShow less

@Let’s Talk Religion I wish you had used charts/ maps/ timelines as Useful Charts did in his discussion. The way you presented the information made your argument more convoluted and less likely to provoke thoughtful discussion. The sources you discussed were weak at best. You didn’t really give much scientific/ archeologic proof to back up your claims. After watching Useful Charts, I had high hopes for you and your channel. I left feeling disappointed and like I had wasted so much time. By the way, Josephus is biased and self-serving. I understand that the church destroyed all other evidence from that time that would go against their beliefs. But, you should have discussed this in much more detail as well as how untrustworthy a source he was. Come on, man, do better.Read more

Thank you LTR! I think this is a very fair treatment of the data. What interests me about the 'Jesus Movement' are the traditions and rituals of worship that grew up after his death, many of which are based on his commandments found in scripture. Such as the Sunday breaking of bread, baptism, plus care of the poor, evangelisation etc. There were certainly things in the teaching of Christ that appear to be more central than others, and which the early community followed from very early on.Read more

I have a problem with the Flavius Josephus account as a reliable source on the Jesus topic. He was borne 37 CE, how on earth could he be a witness to the Jesus character. He was a military commander of Galilee during the Judaeans revolting against Rome. 66–70 CE. After this he moved to Rome and became a writer under imperial patronage. When did he wrote his Jesus history and where did he get his information at least 50 years after the event? We have different opinions on reliable material.Show less

@Willie Van Straaten : First, off he was Jewish himself and as a kid I’m sure he heard from the people around him all of what Jesus had done. Secondly he mentioned about twenty other people from the New Testament including John, Jesus’ brother, John the Baptist, Herod, Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate, Felix, Ciaphas the high priest etc And yet no one questions him on these people. I even heard the Jews themselves refer to him to fill out their historyShow less

01 The History Guy: “Josephus was a historian?” Yes, and not all history is a factual reality. Legendary stories do have the tendency of developing fascinating results introduced by different storytellers (historians). History is not just what really happened in the past, but a complex intersection of truths, bias and hopes and recording hearsay without any verification. History encompasses at least three different ways of accessing the past: it can be remembered or recovered or even invented. All are imperfect in some way. The more it is based on hearsay and retelling the more it gets distorted. Josephus recorded 40 : 60 years after the event? How do you think the Bible got into existence? Scribes, (historians) with info gathered from folklore, traditional stories and myths. How reliable are the information and events described in the Bible?Show less

All the ancient writers - most notably Augustine - agreed that Matthew was the first gospel written, probably in Aramaic. I’m curious about why videos such as this accept the modern theory of Markan priority, which is based layers on highly speculative “textual criticism”. According to the guidelines set forth at the beginning of the video, the ancient writers, being over a thousand years closer to the facts and in possession of even earlier texts, would be more reliable than the speculative modern scholars. Or am I missing something?Show less

Everyone reading this, I want to tell you that Jesus Christ isn't just real, but that he's God and the Son of God, and that 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ died on the cross for you to be saved. God sent his Son to pay the price for your sins, and he loves you very much. The Bible also says that if you confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you'll be saved. God bless you all! He loves you all so very much.

There is a major lack in understanding and reading the original texts and religion traditions. First the Romans were horribly bureaucratic, if Jesus or any one comparable to him would have lived, you would find writings about him because he would have been seen as a dangerous rebel. Second for Jews than and until now aswell for the Romans death is and was unclean and never ever would someone be buried within the city walls. Executing any one was never done inside the city either, no it was done at the entrance of the city as a possible repellent. Remember Nero's burning crosses with executed people on it on the main way to Rome.Show less

@Nas PB Thanks!
Just in the first lines it claims that Jesus is the Word (logos) and thus a divine pre-creation principle.

Proof Eucharist is body of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary is his mother.
48I am the bread of life.
49Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;z
50this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.
51I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”a
52The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?”
53Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.
54Whoever eats* my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.
55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.
57Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.b
58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

PS. Thanks for replying.

If Jesus was the Messiah, i would not deny this
But if James is the family of Jesus it means Jesus is Rome and we don't know what Rome has to do with the Middle East except as invaders please why is there no explanation about this
and the real name of Jesus is ishua(arabic) / yishua(aram) / Iesus(rome) / Jesus (united states???)????
secondly, Jesus is not a god of other traditions
when talking about other traditions at least you need proof such as an explanation of your own bible
we cannot accept an opinion without having a clear basis

This was absolutely irresponsible to post. You don't know anything about the modern historicity debate. You clearly haven't read Dennis R. MacDonald, Richard Carrier, Bart Ehrman, Robert Price, or even Tim o'Neill. This entire video is extremely misinformed and you should do better research in the future. I'm not trying to be mean, but maybe leave history to the actual historians? At least have a bare grip on the topic you present!

You have the wrong Josephus reference, misuse Tacitus, and try to shoehorn the Bible as first-person accounts which no reputable historian does, not even those who argue in support of a historical Jesus. This needed more research and care put it into it before you sent it out to so many people.

His book is a classic and his life is a testimony of spiritual righteousness..

In exile and the Dalai Lama refuge after the invasion of Tibet by China in the 1950's where the got. In exile still resides.

Our version of the New Testament - 'The Exhortations' - concentrates on his ethical teachings, rather than on him:

Come on, man, do better.

Who anointed Jesus? Acts 4: On hearing this, Peter and John raised their voices with one accord to God and said: 26 The kings of the earth took their stand and the rulers gathered together as one against JEHOVAH and against HIS ANOINTED ONE. 27 For truly both Herod and Pontius Pilate with men of the nations and with peoples of Israel were gathered together in this city against YOUR HOLY SERVANT JESUS, 'WHOM YOU ANOINTED', 30 while you stretch out your hand for healing and while signs and wonders occur THROUGH THE NAME OF YOUR HOLY SERVANT JESUS.

You do good work...just not in this video. Shameful. The gospels are not evidence nor is “the opinion of historians” many if not all of whom are staunch Christians, and thus, incredibly biased. Also if you spent any time in higher academia/science you would know that consensus is the norm, not an aberration. Academics are followers and go where the citation count/prestige leads them, not Truth.

is Jesus himself really that important? I'd argue that it's the Christians that came after him that did most of the legwork in making him and his teachings (which were mostly not original ideas, but stuff from Judaism, hell, for the first centuries of it's existence, scholars can't meaningfully separate belief in Jesus from Judaism. it became separate when Christians influencers went on an antisemitic spree, and wanted and did de-Jewify their religion, by cutting down on demands present in Judaism. they said that followers of Jesus don't need to keep kashrut)

There were certainly things in the teaching of Christ that appear to be more central than others, and which the early community followed from very early on.

We have different opinions on reliable material.

@Willie Van Straaten : First, off he was Jewish himself and as a kid I’m sure he heard from the people around him all of what Jesus had done.
Secondly he mentioned about twenty other people from the New Testament including John, Jesus’ brother, John the Baptist, Herod, Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate, Felix, Ciaphas the high priest etc
And yet no one questions him on these people. I even heard the Jews themselves refer to him to fill out their history

01 The History Guy: “Josephus was a historian?”
Yes, and not all history is a factual reality.

All the ancient writers - most notably Augustine - agreed that Matthew was the first gospel written, probably in Aramaic. I’m curious about why videos such as this accept the modern theory of Markan priority, which is based layers on highly speculative “textual criticism”. According to the guidelines set forth at the beginning of the video, the ancient writers, being over a thousand years closer to the facts and in possession of even earlier texts, would be more reliable than the speculative modern scholars. Or am I missing something?

He talks about jews and Romans and totally ignored Armenian sources.
It’ll be more professional if you talk about Armenia because Armenia was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 A.D. Christianity has played an immensely important role in the shaping of the Armenian people for over 1,700 years. Religion has been an essential part of Armenian identity and has reshaped the course of history. Just FYI

@letstalkreligion - Actually there is an archeological video on Timeline: "Could This Be the Real Tomb of Jesus" - on You Tube that found His family's tomb that held the ossuaries, or "bone boxes" of His family! Check it out.. 🙏🏼😇
And, if He was in fact God incarnate, He cannot be described, or defined! He just was, is & will always be the divine Messiah! 💜

Remember Nero's burning crosses with executed people on it on the main way to Rome.

@Watchmen of Truth it is very sad initially to find this out as because as a child you get loyal to Jesus as you do father Xmas. But when you consider the magic that Jesus did bringing people back from the dead, giving sight to the blind as miracles I started to question about creating a real live bird out of clay and decided that was the work of a magician. So now I only pray directly to God.

Lets Talk Religion - Why JESUS and you may say why not. JESUS firstly wasnt the name where so called Christians jump around the or shall i say part of the world. As per many records which is mainly from Romans, there was no Jesus or son of god as he supposedly was a criminal. We do the same today to any extremists.

Who anointed Jesus? Acts 4: On hearing this, Peter and John raised their voices with one accord to God and said: 26 The kings of the earth took their stand and the rulers gathered together as one against JEHOVAH and against HIS ANOINTED ONE. 27 For truly both Herod and Pontius Pilate with men of the nations and with peoples of Israel were gathered together in this city against YOUR HOLY SERVANT JESUS, 'WHOM YOU ANOINTED', 30 while you stretch out your hand for healing and while signs and wonders occur THROUGH THE NAME OF YOUR HOLY SERVANT JESUS.Show less

I'd argue that it's the Christians that came after him that did most of the legwork in making him and his teachings (which were mostly not original ideas, but stuff from Judaism, hell, for the first centuries of it's existence, scholars can't meaningfully separate belief in Jesus from Judaism. it became separate when Christians influencers went on an antisemitic spree, and wanted and did de-Jewify their religion, by cutting down on demands present in Judaism. they said that followers of Jesus don't need to keep kashrut)Show less
