Maharaj Nisargadatta
A simple man, Nisargadatta Maharaj, was a householder and petty shopkeeper in Bombay where he lived, and died in 1981 at the age of 84. He had not been educated formally, but came to be respected and loved for his insights into the crux of human pain and the extraordinary usidity of his direct discourse. Hundreds of diverse seekers traveled the globe and sought him out in his unpretentious home to hear him. To all of them he gave hope that "beyond the real experience is not the mind, but the self, the light in which everything appears...the awareness in which everything happens."

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the coverReviewed in the United States on April 13, 2023

Whenever I am looking for this book I ask my kids if they have seen my spaceman book and it makes me giggle. I always think teachers like these just want to shake someone out of the dream state but instead find ten thousand ways to point back to the same thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars experience of the voidReviewed in the United States on November 11, 2012

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj's Talks on Realizing the Infinite is one of his last discourses. Here he elaborates on
the experience of nothingness (the absolute) as the final goal of spiritual work.
He is truly one of the greatest masters of the yoga of wisdom. Highly recommended to advanced seekers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but rather complicatedReviewed in the United States on October 15, 2013

Perhaps it is because the author is from a different part of the world, but I found it hard to follow. Then I read another book about the emptiness which was much easier to grasp. However, I did understand some of it.

It is strange how entangled, complicated and dense SNM's books, other than his famous I Am That, are. Did edtior Maurice Frydman work some magic on I Am That? Could it be that the clarity of that work owes to Frydman? Maharaj seems much less impressive--laborious and blurry--in these books edited by Robert Powell.

5.0 out of 5 stars A helpful insight into these teachings.Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2014

This enlightened teacher was a fascinating person, to say the least. I read at least three books of his teachings. I found them pleasantly thought-provoking and helpful to me on my journey.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not convinced... on the contrary!Reviewed in France on December 14, 2013
Verified Purchase
As part of my personal research, I have read many books. For various reasons, he did not convince me. In short, I find it a little excessive to assert so easily some apparent “truths” about finally divine features even if what is written is the author's experience. On the other hand, there must be a strong reductive impact linked to the inevitable barrier of language, since ~and especially in areas falling within this mystical category ~ words betray far more than they reflect such profound thoughts, necessarily approximate as soon as one wants to describe them with words. Anyone interested in Hinduism should probably find his cup of tea there... I think the mystical domain is richer, more varied and less restricted than that.
