The book covers the major meditation techniques, presenting them in an uncomplicated, interesting and creative format, so you can apply them in the real world. 5.0 out of 5 stars A book that is handy and more like a "textbook" to me...

I was waiting eagerly for this book to arrive. I came across the author, Giovanni Dienstmann when I was searching for some information on meditation techniques via the internet. From then, I was always reading his articles, etc.

Just like quite a number of people might say, I wish there was such a book when I was embarking on my own meditation journey during my teenage years...This book basically covers the most well-known techniques. The most important thing for me is that every single "famous" system or technique is in one book - it is more like a textbook or reference book. It is simple to understand, short and straight to the point. The colours add to the vibrant of the book too. Not too wordy and too plain either - to me, it is in balance - just like what I wanted.

I purchased this book for my family members too. Just as I am benefitting, I am 100% sure my family members will benefit from this book and strengthen their daily meditation and/or contemplation practices.
Furthermore, I like the list of the resources at the end of the book...it makes it easier for me to refer or to go deeper on some authors or systems should I wish to.

Thank you to all those who made this book possible and also to Amazon for sending it to me in Singapore!

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete, accurate, and beautifully illustrated

Finally, a book on meditation that's non-partisan and factual. The author explains all types of meditation, how they work, and who might be most attracted to a particular type. Whatever form you decide to use, he urges you to just do it! There are sections where he addresses people's fears and skepticism.

This book is beautifully illustrated and thoughtfully produced. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meditation Made Simple

Giovanni did a wonderful job breaking down the scientific benefits of meditation in his book. Even if you have read his published articles from his blog, you will still find his book not only useful, but also pleasing to read as the illustrations are easy on the eyes. With the existence of so many meditation techniques and styles, Giovanni breaks them all down so the methods are easily digestible for practical use. I enjoyed the book and will continue to refer back to it often in my own meditation journey. Thank you Giovanni.

I am a meditation and yoga teacher, leading people in their practices. This book has proven to be be exactly what the title states a "Practical Simple Step-By-Step Meditation Guide". All of us can get into patterns preferring one practice to another. Thank you Giovanni Dienstmann for bringing such a straightforward guide to the world! I go to this book for fresh ideas for a new approach and then bring it into the room for my students. I am recommending the book to my students for their own practices as well. Why should you buy this book? Open this book to any page and there will be a gem of insight to enhance your practice. I tell people from the beginner to the advanced practitioner there is growth for everyone in this easy to read book. What a lovely gift to the world.

A definite must for people new to meditation and a great resource for anyone interested in meditation.

This book far exceeded my expectations! Every page contains beautiful illustrations that make the information extremely accessible and easy to understand.

The book covers the many different types of meditation, as well as their history, commonly asked questions and the various benefits of each style.

My favorite quote is: “The best technique is the one that works for you at this moment in your life.” I love this non-dogmatic approach and its invitation to discover the many ways to explore your mind. Thank you Giovanni for writing such a beautiful, informative, well-researched book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Title Says it All!

As a mindfulness meditation teacher myself, I have appreciated Giovanni's offerings through his blog for some time and was excited to read his first book. "Practical" is exactly what it is; with offerings of different types of meditation and for different needs, it is concise, readable, and highly impactful. It is full of "pearls of wisdom" for everyone at every level of practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise, but with a deep knowledge behind the simplicity

I have about 300 hours of seated meditation practice, so am not exactly a beginner, but I am always looking for ways to solidify my understanding of what meditation actually is, and what it isn't. I have also been looking for a good book to recommend to friends interested in starting a practice. This book is the best one i've found so far for that purpose, with the right combination of easy-on-the-eye graphics and good advice, pared down to the bone - there's no fluff in this book, and although it may have the look and feel of a surface-level introductory book, there is actually much more depth than initially apparent. The most helpful and interesting part for me is the section on 39 meditation techniques spread out across the major traditions including modern secular practices. I feel this would have taken me a long time to collate something like this as an individual searching through books and the internet, and there are a good few in there that I was drawn to and will try in my practice (I have worked solely on concentration practices up 'til now).

Giovanni doesn't really go into his personal story and experience much, but I know from reading his blog that he is a very deep thinker and a true expert in the art of meditation (I think he has around 8-9000 hours formal practice in a variety of techniques, and has had deep insight experiences), not just another person jumping on the ever-growing bandwagon of selling anything to do with meditation. I highly recommend it for beginners all the way through to those with hundreds of hours of practice under their belts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to know which meditation is the most suitable for you
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 22, 2019

The reasons to meditate can be various: to calm down, to become more self aware, to improve your focus.. I have been practising Vipassana meditation for 2 years, which has helped me to be more mindful of my thoughts and behaviour, but also I agree with the author that it is not the best for relaxation. There are other meditations, love kindness for example: very useful to grow feelings of love and compassion towards yourself and others and combat insomnia, or to improve concentration, like trataka or 3rd eye.
So plenty to choose and decide which meditation suits you best!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a step by step guide

It is not a step by step guide. It is wide-ranging and broad-brush for what that is worth. It must have required much research. The author should have devoted most of the book to whatever method helped him best. All the methods seem to require a lot of effort except the mantra one, which Transcendental Meditation teaches so well, for a fee. TM has helped me and I have been practising it on and off for 38 years.
