Through a systematic introduction of Confucius as a historical figure, a spiritual leader, a philosopher, a political reformer, an educator, and a person, this book offers a comprehensive, lucid, and in-depth articulation of Confucius and his teachings for Western students. It explains how his ideas are different from their Western counterparts as well as challenging the orthodox Western understandings of Confucianism. The book reveals clearly how Confucius's insights can be a rich resource for addressing contemporary problems and re-enchanting the world and the contemporary life. (less)

Product description

Review
There is no shortage of introductory books on Confucius. What makes Ni's book outstanding is, as its subtitle shows, that it takes a gongfu approach, not in the sense that it presents Confucius as a martial artists with wonderful skills of fighting. Rather, it pictures Confucius as one of the greatest Chinese philosophers, if not the greatest one, who, instead of interested in solving profound intellectual riddles, is good at teaching his students the simple art of living a life that is authentically human. Confucius: The Man and the Way of Gongfu is simply the best of the kind.

Prof Peimin Ni is a master in explaining complex terms and ancient philosophy in a very clear way. He subtly compares both Eastern and Western philosophy in a very delicate way - I believe Peimin Ni is a Gongfu writer. This book is fantastic if you would like to have a new perspective on life and learn more about Eastern philosophy!

After making some Chinese friends, I realized that my education had a tremendous deficiency in Chinese history and culture. I began to read books on Chinese history, society, tea, poetry, and art. The common denominator in all of these endeavors is the understanding of Confucius and the affect his writings have had on what makes Chinese culture unique and special.

Reading this book taught me more about China than all of the other books I have read combined. To understand China and the Chinese on any level, one must understand Confucius. This book is written for people who know nothing about Confucius. Although it is relatively expensive and brief, it is worth reading by anyone who is curious about Chinese culture, but does not have much knowledge or exposure to it. This book is informative and well written, and also includes an extensive bibliography for extended readings. It is an excellent primer for anyone who intends on learning what Confucius teaches, or for anyone who intends to read his writings. I am very glad to have found this book and read it as it has greatly enhanced my limited knowledge of China and her people. If you are not familiar with Chinese culture and history, as I was not, I would encourage you to explore them. I was amazed at what I did not know about a country with a long, rich, and deep history of art, music, literature, and learning. It's absolutely fascinating. I have found this book essential to my journey.
