Centering Prayer is the path to a wonderful and radical new way of seeing the world. It is not, as is sometimes thought, simply an act of devotional piety, nor is it a Christianized form of other meditation methods. Cynthia Bourgeault here cuts through the misconceptions to show that Centering Prayer is in fact a pioneering development within the Christian contemplative tradition. She provides a practical, complete course in the practice and then goes deeper to analyze what actually happens in Centering Prayer: the mind effectively switches to a new operating system that makes possible the perception of nonduality. With this understanding in place, she then takes us on a journey through one of the sources of the practice, the Christian contemplative classic The Cloud of Unknowing, revealing it to be among the earliest Christian explorations of the phenomenology of consciousness.
Cynthia Bourgeault’s illumination of the Centering Prayer path provides compelling evidence of how important the practice has become in the half-century since it first arose among American Trappist monks, and of its maturation and refinement over the ensuing years of sincere study and practice. It will resonate with beginners on the Centering Prayer path as well as with seasoned practitioners.

Review
A masterpiece of spiritual wisdom firmly rooted in the Christian mystical tradition. A brilliant analysis of nondual Christianity in theory and in practice and a major contribution to the Centering Prayer movement and to interspiritual dialogue. --Thomas Keating, author of Open Mind, Open Heart
"A profound resource. The Heart of Centering Prayer provides a holistic, embodied, rounded and grounded depth to Centering Prayer for both the committed and the new practitioner. It also continues Thomas Keating's wisdom teaching in the most meaningful and singular way, so that the practice (and Christian contemplation itself) can stand in dialogue with other traditions and the sciences for the new millennium."--David Frenette, author of The Path of Centering Prayer --This text refers to the paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Nuts & Bolts" of Centring Prayer - I highly recommend it!

This book covers some nuances that are not clearly stated in other books on the subject - centring prayer. It equally clarifies in modern, clear, and sometimes colloquial language the classic work, "The Cloud of Unknowing". The serious learner on contemplative practice will find this work, in parallel with "Centring Prayer and Inner Awakening" - by the same author, and the most recent translation of "The Cloud..." by Carmen Acevedo Butcher the compass to guide them in the contemplative journey. This work is no doubt a reference on contemplative practice.
It is time for the Christian West to reclaim what has been hidden for so long under the heavy hand of scholasticism, without resorting to Eastern practices, culturally foreign to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be challenged at the cutting edge

On page 205, Ms. Bourgeault notes that “Centering Prayer seems like an odd duck”. This is true when you read the early part of the book about the nature of this rediscovered approach to prayer and the significant differences between it and the more classical approaches. However, therein lies the strength of this wonderful book. In very clear steps, in the first section , we are guided with sensitivity into a new way of being present to the sacred in life. It’s worth noting that the book comes in three sections, almost like three interlinking books and I found it best to read them in sequence. After a while, the approach began to wash over me and gradually challenged many of my assumptions and practices. Many years ago I had worked my way through “The Cloud of Unknowing” but the insights of Ms. Bourgeault threw a whole new light on this classic from the middle ages. Her perspectives from neuroscience (Chapter 6) exposes a whole new understanding of what is actually happening to our brains as we place ourselves in holographical resonance with the holy. This book is a tour de force which challenges our dualistic ways of thinking and being. Be prepared to be challenged by this cutting edge approach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Service

I was overjoyed with the seller due to my asking them for a fast despatch (reading this book for a book club) and they got it sent out as soon as they could, leaving me plenty of time to read the first part. Speaking Tree books in Glastonbury are wonderful. Just sayin'! And the book is fabulous too. Loving it. Cynthia Bourgeault's humour is as present in it as her talks and workshops, so I'm not disappointed. A great indepth delve into Centering Prayer, what it is, isn't and deeper we go.. Enjoy folks.

Cynthia is such a good writer, I just had to get her new book, and I was not disappointed. If you are interested in Contemplative Prayer and Centering Prayer, this an excellent read. I'm hoping she writes a book on 'The Third Way' soon. To me, The Third Way is the next stage for humanity. To borrow from Arundhati Roy "on a quiet day, I can hear her breathing". ❤️
