이상한 책이 하나 나왔습니다. 오래 전 동아일보 여성동아 장편소설 공모전에서 남지심 작가의 <솔바람 물결소리>가 당선작으로 선정되었는데, 그 소설이 캐나다 토론토에서 발행된 교포신문에 연재되었습니다. 저는 1주일에 한 번씩 연재되는 그 소설을 연구실에서 심심풀이 삼아 영어로 번역하다가 끝까지 다 했습니다. 마침 연구연을 맞아 한국 서울대에 강의하러 갔는데, 도서관에서 신문을 보다가 한국일보 자매지 The Korea Times에서 한국문학 번역상 공모 광고를 보게 되었습니다. 제가 번역한 것을 그리로 보냈더니 우연히 최고 번역상으로 트로피와 금일봉을 받게 되었습니다.
문학을 좋아하지만 문학이 저의 전공 분야도 아니고 번역을 주업으로 하는 것도 아니라서 그것을 출판할 생각을 못하고 있다가, 이왕 번역해 놓은 것 제가 죽기 전에 빛을 보도록 하는 것이 좋겠다는 마음으로 이번 캐나다에서 출판하게 되었습니다.
이 책은 한국에서 처음 나왔을 때 40쇄를 낼 정도로 인기였고, 얼마 전에는 완전 새로운 판으로 다시 나왔습니다. 남지심 작가는 그 후 <우담바라1,2,3,4> 등 소설, 수필집 등을 계속내어 한국에서는 잘 알려진 작가입니다.
캐나다 출판사 편집인이 이 책을 두고 “Deeply moving and scattered with the teachings of Buddhism, <The Whisper of the Breeze from Pine Trees and Flowing Streams> uninhibitedly confronts what it means to be human in this often lonely and disconnected world.”이라고 적었습니다. (깊이 감동적이고 여기저기 불교의 가르침이 들어가 있는 이 책은 고독하고 소외된 이 세계에서 인간이 된다는 것이 무엇인지를 거침없는 필치로 다루고 있다.-의역)

On the day of her orientation ceremony to start university, Jaun runs into the young Monk Hyegang, an old friend, who has a gift for her, a rosary, from his guardian, Monk Dasol. Upon thanking him for the gift, Jaun is surprised and curious to learn this great monk has been watching her from afar for many years, perhaps since her mother’s death.
But why? Jaun was only school-aged back then and can’t remember ever meeting him. Her mother had been teaching Korean language to grade ten boys, and Hyegang was her student. Before Jaun can discover more, Monk Dasol passes away. However, when Jaun’s aunt reads of Monk Dasol’s death in the newspaper, she gives Jaun something that has been in her possession since Jaun’s mother died, something that might give Jaun some answers—her mother’s journal.
At Monk Dasol’s cremation ceremony, Monk Hyegang invites Jaun to sit with him and Jaun shows him the journal. She hasn’t read it yet. Together, Jaun and Hyegang decide to read the journal, which takes place during the ten-month period before her mother’s death.
