This important new book brings together the work of top scholars and clinicians at leading universities and medical centres on the benefits and risks of transpersonal therapy. After comparing a variety of multicultural approaches, Zen Buddhism, existential phenomenology, and Christian mysticism, among many others, the book offers a wealth of information on specific disorders and the application of transpersonal psychology techniques such as visualization, breathwork, and past lives" regression. With solid scholarship, wide scope, and accessible style, Textbook of Transpersonal Psychiatry and Psychology will become the standard work for students, researchers, clinicians, and lay readers interested in extending psychiatry and psychology into sciences that describe the functioning of the human mind, thereby building bridges between those disciplines and spirituality.

Product description
From the Back Cover
Taking a fresh, multidisciplinary perspective, this book summarizes and integrates the emerging fields of transpersonal psychiatry and psychology. After surveying the Western roots of transpersonal psychiatry and psychology in William James, Carl Jung, and Christian and Jewish mysticism, the book reviews the rich contributions of such differing cultures as shamanism, Hinduism, and Buddhism, illustrating the influence of these traditions on the therapeutic community. The authors then proceed to the latest scientific research on meditation, psychedelics, altered states, and parapsychology. Organizing human experience into a continuum - from a basic level dominated by biological factors to personal, psychological structures and on to complex, spiritual experiences - seasoned transpersonal clinicians discuss distinctive issues, problems, and treatments at each level. Through engaging, real-life cases, the contributors describe practical techniques, including the outcomes and risks of various interventions. With solid scholarship, wide scope, and accessible style, Textbook of Transpersonal Psychiatry and Psychology will become the standard work for students, researchers, clinicians, and lay readers interested in extending psychiatry and psychology into sciences that describe the full range of functioning of the human mind, thereby building bridges between those disciplines and spirituality.

So many people, both professionals and laymen, just don't get it when it comes to transpersonal psychology (the word still gets a spelling underline in the word processor). This textbook is well organized and provides an excellent insight into the concepts. I would highly recommend it as a starting place for those who would like to know more as the bibliography and references can point to more extensive material. The book is also well written and edited as they kept the chapters in a logical sequence and short enough to complete in a minimum amount of time.

Margot Borden
Oct 01, 2016Margot Borden rated it it was amazing
A comprehensive and very informative survey of the transpersonal psychology movement that emerged in the 1960s. It starts out by setting the cultural context which lays the foundations for essays on the work of Freud other early psychologists, the humanistic movement (Maslow), and then the founders and contributors to transpersonal theory and therapy: Jung, Assagioli, Wilber and others. Each chapter provides succinct, yet comprehensive perspectives on the many schools of thought that contribute to transpersonal theory and work. I appreciated the different perspectives and styles of the contributors which gave me the sense of the usefulness and importance of different perspectives not just in our research but in our therapeutic pursuits. The chapter on transpersonal psychotherapy with religious persons, while presenting interesting views, was decidedly western-centric and erred on the side of reductionistic. Furthermore, it blurred the distinction between religion and spirituality. This book is an essential read for any aspiring transpersonal therapist. (less)
