For the majority of us, masturbation is the most widespread sexual practice, and for the majority of males, it is the first sexual experience of their lives. However, it remains the most unmovable taboo in Western morality.
This book shows how this came about historically and how modern psychology has compounded the problem. If the book claims the audience it deserves, perhaps the world will change. The storm will pass; masturbation will henceforth become a right. It will be deemed lawful, good, agreeable, beautiful, convenient, simple, excellent, decent, meritable, useful, valuable, happy, frequent, habitual, ordinary, comprehensive, exciting, appetizing, attractive, captivating, recreative, interesting, stimulating, passionate and a tonic. FIVE WARS AGAINST ONE
Philippe Brenot: The Praise of Masturbation (1997). Kani 2008. 176 p.
Rating 3 out of 5 stars
The most natural and personal basis of all sexual activity, masturbation, definitely deserves to be raised on a pedestal.
The nature of the strong taboo is involved in dealing with the matter. Even though we are already on the threshold of the 2020s, masturbation is still associated with various beliefs and delusions, the root causes of which go back historically thousands of years. Something about the embarrassment that has continued to this day is also indicated by the fact that Gummerus publishing Oy published the work in question here under its already discontinued Kani series.
The French psychiatrist, anthropologist, sexologist and researcher Philippe Brenot (b. 1948) grabbed the happiness of masturbating in the form of a short pamphlet as early as the end of the last millennium.
Brenot is known in France for his books on sexuality and human relationships. Unfortunately, he has not just been translated, so Tommi Uschanov's (b. 1975) excellent Finnish translation serves the Finnish readership in general.
As a French performance, the praise of Masturbation , despite its brilliant remarks and interesting written quotations, may not be enough for the Finnish reader. Thus, at the end of the pamphlet, Sexu ry researcher Anu Suomela 's own, excellent article on the history of Finnish written solo sex is included. Suomela's remarks are an important extension of Brenot's presentation, which remains short and general.
Brenot’s Masturbation Praise focuses on the French perspective, culture, literature, and philosophy of masturbation. The inward-looking approach is explained by the interesting observation that the concept of masturbation has been introduced into the language by the French, incomparable Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592), to whom masturbation presented itself as the most stable value of love.
The transformation of self-love into an act to be condemned in the Enlightenment can also be traced to the French cultural circle. In 1758, SA Tissot (1728 - 1797), a doctor from Geneva, published a book on Onania, a disease caused by masturbation . It began with Brenot a two-hundred-year tradition of blurring, sexual desire, and cremation of ascending pastimes. For Tissot, masturbation manifested as a pathological disease, the symptoms of which remained unfortunate until the 20th century: Impaired strength and fertility, nervousness, laziness and lethargy, various pathological diseases, insanity, resilience, wastefulness…
Enlightenment thinkers added another addition to the soup, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 - 1778), another famous Genevaian who knew Tissot personally and praised Tissot as a “doctor of the soul”. In historically different contexts, Rousseau has also been accused of intellectual dishonesty in various contexts, and Brenot does not find his views on the evils of masturbation convincing. He barks at philosophy openly as a false asshole!
Merde! For the reader, the tone of the pamphlet as a French controversy could not come out better.
Once the sweetest thing in the world has been in the collar, its pursuit has had to be presented with covert hints. Does Titian’s (1490-1576) painting “Venus of Urbino” (1538) engage in five wars against one? Image: Wikipedia Commons.
In the centuries that followed, numerous “doctors of love,” as Brenot calls them, brought their own addition to the soup, offering different theories about the evils of masturbation. And where scientists presented their evidence, there too, their various stalkers, both religious and secular, presented gloomy warnings and means of protection against this “five wars against one”.
What kind of mental and physical assault has been practiced under the guise of masturbating smoking! Brenot’s descriptions of patients chained to bed, ingesting a variety of herbs and using clothing — chastity belts and concerts — from whipping, electroconvulsive care, and surgical procedures to clipping or burning the clitoris are felt in the reader’s ovaries.
An interesting, publicly available detail related to masturbation is related to the tradition of circumcision of boys and girls. Religious superstition can be found behind the repulsive, painful procedure that causes trauma, sexual anxiety and health problems. The quote quoted by Anu Suomela in her article from the Jewish rabbi and philosopher Moses Maimonide (1135 - 1204) leaves no room for interpretation. The ultimate motive for circumcision seems to be to produce pain to reduce the passion that is considered sinful. In the Islamic world, female circumcision has been defended on the same grounds.
Historically, masturbation has been treated differently in different eras. Starting points for demonization can be found in the Old Testament of the Bible , the story of Onan. When Onan refused to conceive a child to his widowed mother, but engaged in interrupted intercourse, onania, by allowing his seed to drain to the ground, the ferocious Yahweh killed him with a bolt of lightning. While to the modern reader, the story appears primarily from the defense of the nomadic folk marriage law of the nomadic people, it brings out the mystical, blood and sperm, objects that have deeply moved religious communities and cults throughout history.
There is no commandment in the Bible to forbid masturbation, but the mystical sanctity of semen has been closely associated with Christianity since the first churches. In Suomela's article, both Father St. Augustine (354-430 et al.) And Tuomas Akvinolain (1225 - 1274) condemn their judgment on masturbation . Of the Protestants, Martti Luther (1483 - 1546) is considered a prophet of liberal marital love, but onan and masturbation were disgusting sins to him as well.
Philosopher Diogenes Sinopelainen in his barrel. After all, there would have been no one else to fit in. Artist John William Waterhouse (1849 - 1917) painting Diogenes (1883). Image: Wikipedia Commons.
From the point of view of philosophy, the most famous thinker who realized the happiness of his own hand is probably the cynical philosopher Diogenes Sinopelainen (412 - 323 BC), who lived in a barrel . When asked why she masturbated on the street, she is said to have replied that she thus hoped to satisfy the feeling of hunger in her stomach. For the cynics who advocated strong naturalism and asceticism, no human activity was foreign.
Despite the less complex attitude of the cynics towards the happiness of their own hand, the mystery associated with semen did not get rid of it later, even though a rather neutral attitude seemed to have prevailed, at least in part, in the Middle Ages. As the 17th century approached, emotions were stirred by the accelerated development of the natural sciences. The recently discovered microscope brought sperm to the attention of the scientific community. The man's semen seemed to be bubbling with life. Vibrating sperm, combined with biblical interpretations, served as a frame of reference in which SA Tissot’s aforementioned work was “sown with seeds”.
The change for the better will finally take place at the beginning of the 20th century. The changes that have taken place in the human image also extend to human sexuality. Brave sexologists, such as the Englishman Havelock Ellis (1859-1939), already directly declare that masturbation is not a pathological way, but a completely natural activity that has no negative health effects.
Kaboom! Thousands of old beliefs are finally blown up in the air. But, as with fundamental change, progress is painfully slow. Old habits and attitudes are gradually changing. Even in Sigmund Freud (1856 - 1939), masturbation is a neurotic, pre-balanced stage of sexual development. This view remained within the scope of psychoanalysis for quite some time.
The Brenot Declaration highlights the importance of knowledge for sexual well-being and, on the other hand, how much sexuality and its manifestations evoke social passions. Ultimately, it is a conscious effort, a will to power, to define exclusively what is sexually acceptable and what is reprehensible. Familiarization with Brenot’s pamphlet brings to light the rather unpleasant observation that sexual taboos and attempts to limit the manifestations of sexuality have historically often resulted in the creation of personalities whose own relationship to what is considered the most adorable thing in the world has been at least contradictory.
Interesting are the remarks made by Anu Suomela in her article about how similar evidence has been used to suppress various forms of sexuality, as shown by the drawing of similarities in the centuries-old struggle against masturbation and homosexuality. And it is not appropriate to forget women either. In his pamphlet, Brenot unequivocally proves that the relationship to the evil or permissibility of masturbation has been made by men — religious leaders, philosophers, scientists, and writers. Thus, for example, with regard to the latter group, Marcel Proust (1871-1922), Maurice Sachs (1906-1945) and Jean-Paul Sartre ( 1905-1980) were among the first to comment on the beauty of masturbation in France , beforeEmmanuelle Arsan (1932 - 2005) wrote the erotic exploration of a young woman who achieved classic status, Emmanuelle (1959).
The praise of masturbating is largely focused on centuries of eradicating masturbation. Its positive remarks emphasizing the loveliness of experiencing sexuality remain at the end of the work, allowing the title of the pamphlet to come into its own. As a sexologist, Brenot declares the pursuit of auto erotica to be the starting point for personal sexual self-knowledge. How many sexual frustrations, or failures in the sexual life of a relationship, have been caught up in the mapping of either their own or their partner’s needs?
Brenot’s pamphlet appeared more than twenty years ago. Subsequent statistics have shown that the number of people engaging in masturbation has further increased. Fewer and fewer men or women fail to masturbate, and the phenomenon is likely to be explained by an increase in public awareness. In this case, knowledge has not increased pain but enjoyment!
So, let the seed fly and the vulva flood! There is no need to fear a lightning strike from the sky. Masturbation is natural, wonderful, arousing, healing and rewarding. To quote Philippe Brenot, it is suitable for both singles and doubles. The author of this, as a supporter of the ecstasy of Eros, is ready to accept even greater numbers of co- enthusiasts . For everyone as needed!
