Worldviews : crosscultural explorations of human beliefs
by Smart, Ninian, 1927-
Publication date 2000
For courses in Introduction to World Religions and Introduction to Religious Studies.
This text offers a balanced, wide-ranging, and realistic approach to the study of modern religion. It explores and analyzes the many dimensions not only of the major religious traditions, but also those of the civil religions (e.g., nationalism) that often compete and combine with them in the modern world.

3.0 out of 5 stars While the book itself was easy enough to comprehend

While the book itself was easy enough to comprehend, I wasn't too interested in the subject matter itself. The only reason I purchased it was for a college course. If you are looking for a good read on religions as a whole, I would recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars boring book

What a boring book but I needed this for my world religion class. It was a great price which I was really proud of finding compared to others in my class who said they paid double and even sometime triple. I like world religion but for some reason, this book was so boring. Book arrived quick as promised and in good condition.

I gather that this is an old classic for a Religion 101 course, but it does seem to have outlived its usefulness. Because my daughter complained about reading it so much, I actually got another copy from the library to see what the issue was. Indeed, if there's anything that would turn off young people from learning about the "World's Religions", this book jumps into first place. The structure is dull, repetitive, vague, and altogether boring. It does seem to be a book lazy or burned out teachers fall back on because they have notes ready made from years of foisting it off on students. Its sales are more than likely from required reading assignments by this sort of teacher. Buy it second hand, if you must, and try to resell....which is what I am about to try to do.

I purchased this book for a Comparative Religion class, but it will remain on my shelves as a reference. I learned a great deal about various cultures, and recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining a clearer perspective on how to study worldviews.

It was a great selection by my Professor and I enjoyed the class. The book was profound and informative. I strongly recommend it to anyone even outside of the classroom!

Only had to read the intro for my humanities class and I am very thankful I won't have to force myself to read more of this. While it is "good" in a sense that it is a typical textbook that has its uses in the classroom and in student discussion, it is bad in the sense that the author engages in awkward purple prose in an attempt to engage the reader that instead served as a means of distancing me.

Just an okay B book. The author didn’t provide a lot of examples to illustrate his points and some parts are quite hard to read.

Surprisingly pretty good for a "textbook". Didn't agree with everything, but it was an enjoyable and interesting.
