Living Tao: Timeless Principles for Everyday Enlightenment Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars    129 ratings
Tao has been built into the foundation of East Asian culture for millennia, and many books have been written to explain it. But Tao cannot fully be explained in words; it can only felt and experienced. Tao is something you live, day by day, moment by moment. It's the omnipresent oneness beyond ephemeral phenomena that expresses itself in everything.

New York Times bestselling author Ilchi Lee, an enlightened Tao master from South Korea, has laid out a path to living Tao every day. Along this path, he guides you to an understanding of the meaning of birth, death, and everything in between, building a foundation for living a complete and whole life.

Rather than being a review or interpretation of ancient texts, such as the Tao Te Ching, Living Tao draws from the Korean practice of Sundo, an ancient tradition of mind-body training, as well as Lee's own life experience.

With the tangible yet universal principles in Living Tao, Ilchi Lee makes this profound topic simple and accessible. This book has an unparalleled depth in its simplicity that anyone can absorb and immediately apply.

To acknowledge and love ourselves, we have to discover what our true existential value is. Fame and social success are not standards of measure for determining the success of our lives. They are limited values obtainable only by a minority, so they are inadequate as absolute values everyone should pursue. That something that is accessible to anyone with effort, and without any need to compete with others, should be the essential condition for the true existential value for which we must aim. We absolutely cannot find it in the finite, material world. We can find it inside ourselves, in the unseen world of the spirit. It is our true self, our soul. Continuing to grow the energy of the soul in our hearts, and sharing the fragrance of that soul with those around us, is the true absolute value and purpose that brings us fundamental satisfaction and joy.

No matter how hard you try, you can never fill your empty heart solely with energy received through external recognition or success, for these are but temporary comforts. They are not eternal. You can discover within yourself a wellspring of eternal energy. That energy will start to spring forth when you acknowledge and love yourself. The joy you feel from acknowledging yourself is so great that it cannot be compared with the joy you feel from getting recognition from others. This is a matter of being recognized by your conscience and the heaven within you.

You don't acknowledge and love yourself just by thinking about it. You must encounter the life energy within you. Slowly place your hands on your chest, one over the other. Now say this to yourself: "Yes, I have myself. I have myself, who always watches over me, the one who is always on my side no matter what may come. It's my soul and my true self. It is my eternally unchanging life." If you speak to yourself with sincerity, you'll be able to feel the energy of the soul inside you, the energy of life, reviving.

Those who know the true self within them are never afraid or lonely, no matter what may come. Their hearts are filled to overflowing with energy from the feeling of oneness with themselves, as if they possess the whole world. Whenever you feel lonely, whenever you want recognition from someone, continue to meet the true self within your heart repeating, "Yes, I have myself." --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Five Star Reviews Are Suspect.

The reviews on this book are outstanding. However, after thirty-five pages of rather dull reading and less than profound thoughts, I skimmed the text. It never got better. Some (typical) concepts presented are: “The Tao brings us healthier, happier life.” “When you’re angry…go for a walk.” “Another essential element of life is the air you breathe.” “What is your life’s purpose? You’ll obtain the answer only when you search for it earnestly and with all your heart.” “Generally, human beings have three kinds of life, physical, social, spiritual.” If these ideas are revelations to you, then you’ll likely enjoy this volume. For me, it was simplistic, uninteresting, uninspiring and disappointing. As for the glowing testimonials, they appear skewed. The vast majority of the reviewers had reviewed only this book or books by Ilchi Lee and thus it would seem the perspective is biased.

Every seeker should expose themselves to the Tao sooner or later. Sooner is better than later. There is no time like the present. I was afraid I was not totally absorbing this, but apparently I was subconsciously. I found things I was thinking and things I was saying were … different! I would hope – as you read this book (and I do recommend it) – you come to new realizations as to your place in the Universe. Your Tao is, as if you hadn’t guessed by now, your divine nature. He discusses the energy principle of oriental medicine. He also says all principles have the characteristics of reflection, refinement and realization. He further states that we have three bodies: a physical body, an energy body and a spiritual body. He then takes a very noncommittal attitude about reincarnation. He writes “It is not enough to have a few masters or gurus who have awakened to Tao consciousness; everyone must now become an enlightened master.” He proceeds with defining his terms: “Sooshin (One must first cultivate one’s body and mind), Jega (then one can manage one’s family), Chigook (contribute to one’s organization or nation), and Pyungchunha (and bring peace to the world). Spurred on by this book, I envisioned my essential Self or Soul. What I saw I choose to keep secret. Reading the final chapter was a revelation. It gave a name to everything I felt. It also – if I may say so – gave a further explanation to everything I felt. Things quite suddenly fell into place. I do want to recommend this book. Too many times hard-edged Ceremonial Magicians don’t think they need anything this touchy-feely. Well, they’re wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Messages to awaken our consciousness

I highly recommend "Living Tao". Why? Because this book contains many messages that ring true. One that stands out to me is that we all share a precious living resource, Earth. When our collective consciousness rises and we recognize this fact, then the paradigm shifts and we awaken with eyes that see a new world based on harmony of all humanity and the Earth. Mr. Lee calls this Tao Consciousness. With this consciousness, conflicts can be resolved more easily in an "Age of the Global Village". A world view based on love of family, country, humanity and Earth. The technology exists today to make this possible, but now our consciousness needs to catch up.

A wonderful book. It will change your life if you read it with your heart. This book gives you the tools to live a magnificent life full of purpose. I believe being with or around the author, Ilchi Lee, would be like being with Ghandi or Bahá'u'lláh or Mohammed (PBUH) or Jesus Christ when they were alive. Ilchi Lee's teachings are profound yet they are presented in such simple and understandable terms. This is wisdom for eternity. Read this book! Stephen Quinn
