1916년 런던에서 태어났다. 인도 아즈메르에 본부를 둔 치스티 수피 종단의 영적 후신인 실실라 수피 피르회에 속해 있다. 1956년부터 수피 종단을 이끌었고, 10년 뒤 미국에서 수피 센터를 설립했다. 파리 대학에서 심리학과 철학을 공부하고, 옥스포드 대학에서 대학원 과정을 마쳤다. 저서로 『깨어남』『하나를 향해서』『우리 시대의 메시지』『탁발승들의 부름』『카운셀링과 영성』『존재하는 것, 뒤에서 누설되는 것』등이 있다.

이 책, 『숨겨진 보물을 찾아서』는 새로운 형식으로 신비주의적 이슬람인 수피즘을 소개하고 있다. 수피즘은 이슬람 신앙의 형식주의, 행위의 표면만을 보고 심판하는 이슬람법(샤리아) 등에 대한 저항에서 시작되어 8세기 이후 이슬람교가 수니파와 시아파로 분열된 후 시아파에서 나타난 신앙이다. 수피즘은 이슬람의 초창기에 금욕?고행을 중시하는 개인적 신비주의 경험에서 출발해 차츰 수행 방법이 정비되고, 그리스사상과 유태교?그리스도교?불교 등을 받아들이면서 이슬람교가 세계적 종교로 발전하는 데에 중요한 역할을 했다. 수피(신비적)라는 아랍 용어는 초기 이슬람의 금욕주의자들이 입고 다니던 옷인 ‘양모’라는 뜻의 수프(uf)에서 유래했다고 한다. 수피즘은 도취 상태에서 지상(至上)의 경지를 체험하는 것을 목표로 하고 있는데, 타와클(신뢰)?마리파(은총)?파나(망아)와 같은 수피즘 특유의 용어가 그러한 경향을 표현하고 있다. 수피즘은 12～13세기의 사회적 혼란기에 대중화되기 시작해 타리까라고 불리는 수피 종단이 결성되어 사회운동으로 발전하고, 정치?경제?사회?문화 등에서 큰 영향력을 발휘하면서 이슬람 세계 전역으로 확대되어갔다. 이 시기는 오스만 왕조 투르크가 14세기 이후 소아시아에서 발칸 반도로 세력을 확대하고 있었고, 16세기 초 술레이만 대제는 소아시아와 멀리 발칸 반도와 예멘에 이르기까지 지중해 주변 아랍 지역들을 정복해 통일 국가를 이루고, 술탄은 칼리프라고 자칭하여 수니파 이슬람 세계의 수호자로 등장한 혼란스러운 시기였다.
수피즘은 신과 인간의 본성을 확인하고, 이 세상에 존재하는 신의 사랑과 지혜를 체험하는 다양한 신비적 실천 방식들로 이루어져 있다. 이 과정에서 여러 단계의 수련 과정을 거치는데, 수피들은 디크르(신앙을 고백하는 주문)로 수행을 하고, 신에 대한 개인의 체험을 시로 표현하기도 하는 등 신의 진리에 다가가려고 노력한다. 또한 수피즘은 자발적인 가난, 금욕 생활, 명상, 하염없이 계속 원을 그리면서 빙빙 도는 수행무 같은 행위를 통해 이기심을 버리며 자신을 끊임없이 정화하고 자신의 의도와 행동에서 절대적 순수성을 찾아 신에게 가까이 가려 한다.

Vilayat Inayat Khan (19 June 1916 – 17 June 2004) was a teacher of meditation and of the traditions of the East Indian Chishti Sufi order of Sufism. His teaching derived from the tradition of his father, Inayat Khan, founder of The Sufi Order in the West (now named the Ināyati Order), in a form tailored to the needs of Western seekers. One of his sisters was Noor Inayat Khan GC MBE. He taught in the tradition of Universal Sufism. His parents met at the New York City ashram of American yogi, Pierre Bernard, half-brother of his mother Pirani Ameena Begum.[1]
Prior to his teaching career he worked in London as an assistant to Ghulam Mohammed, the Finance Minister of Pakistan in 1949, and served as a personal assistant to Pakistan Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan during his visit to England. [2][3]
In 1975 he founded the Abode of the Message, which serves as the central residential community of the Sufi Order International, a conference and retreat center, and a center of esoteric study.[4]

Vilayat Inayat Khan died on 17 June 2004, two days before his 88th birthday.[9] His son is Zia Inayat Khan.[10] His Dargah is located in Delhi, India.

If you are seeking authentic wisdom from an authentic teacher, this is it. The format is unorthodox; the content is amazing. I cannot imagine not being touched by the beauty in this book, no matter your religious background. It is indeed a treasure created by a connoisseur and master of true mysticism. This was, I believe, the last book he worked on, other than his extraordinary meditation manual - The Ecstacy Beyond Knowing, which was only recently, finally published after much work. It may be my favorite of his books. It can hit you very hard, but in a wonderful and powerfully positive way. His other books are also excellent, but this one is totally unique. I agree with the other reviewer who said the book is like a meditation in itself - and a very deep one if you let it be. As with all things mystical, your mileage may vary, but I do not believe you can possibly go wrong with this one! Pir Vilayat was a mystic whose presence I have never seen matched. He was the real thing. Before I met him, I did not believe such people actually existed at all outside of myth or delusional experience. Extraordinary mystic in every way. I hope you enjoy the book.

This book is a creative dialogue between Sufi masters throughout the ages, taking place in the sacred atmosphere of the divine unity of the spiritual hierarchy. As other reviewers have noted, it is beautifully illustrated, and the feeling running through it is one of both crystalline intelligence and unbounded joy.
You cannot help but catch the spark by reading these pages. I recommend it to all whose hearts long for the indescribable bliss of union with the One Being.
The one qualm I have with the book is the first sentence of the dust jacket's inner flap, which reads: "Sufism is the mystical dimension of Islam, and represents both a vision and a spiritual path that exists on the periphery of the main religion, yet at the same time embodies its deepest truth." This statement is strikingly at odds with the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan's father and teacher, who described Sufism as the essence of all religions, yet belonging to none. Khan argues Sufism is to Islam as green is to Ireland -- the color has become associated with the country, yet it would be silly to suggest that there was no green before there was Ireland.
What masterpiece could exist that does not contain one exquisite flaw?

This is an electric book. You can literally feel the currents flow out of the atmosphere Pir Vilayat book invokes.
The reader is placed in a timeless setting (ie. the imaginal plane) with the great Islamic and Sufi figures throughout time.
While sitting in the presence of these great sages, timeless, practical truths, strange utterances and sweet devotion all strike the reader's heart as if a bell is sounded.
I suggest reading this book as a form of contemplation. Any student of spirituality will find benefit in its pages.

Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan gets 'it.' Here is a Deep Sufism, a Deep Monotheism, that literally goes to the Heart of the matter. Read it if you actually get It, because this is not a text for those who do not. The organization is great, the premise is traditional and wonderful, and Khan puts you at the feet of the masters (himself, rightly, included). The tradition of Khan is deeply rational and deeply super-rational, and this text is squarely in that tradition.

1916년 런던에서 태어났다. 인도 아즈메르에 본부를 둔 치스티 수피 종단의 영적 후신인 실실라 수피 피르회에 속해 있다. 1956년부터 수피 종단을 이끌었고, 10년 뒤 미국에서 수피 센터를 설립했다. 파리 대학에서 심리학과 철학을 공부하고, 옥스포드 대학에서 대학원 과정을 마쳤다. 저서로 『깨어남』『하나를 향해서』『우리 시대의 메시지』『탁발승들의 부름』『카운셀링과 영성』『존재하는 것, 뒤에서 누설되는 것』등이 있다.

이 책, 『숨겨진 보물을 찾아서』는 새로운 형식으로 신비주의적 이슬람인 수피즘을 소개하고 있다. 수피즘은 이슬람 신앙의 형식주의, 행위의 표면만을 보고 심판하는 이슬람법(샤리아) 등에 대한 저항에서 시작되어 8세기 이후 이슬람교가 수니파와 시아파로 분열된 후 시아파에서 나타난 신앙이다. 수피즘은 이슬람의 초창기에 금욕?고행을 중시하는 개인적 신비주의 경험에서 출발해 차츰 수행 방법이 정비되고, 그리스사상과 유태교?그리스도교?불교 등을 받아들이면서 이슬람교가 세계적 종교로 발전하는 데에 중요한 역할을 했다. 수피(신비적)라는 아랍 용어는 초기 이슬람의 금욕주의자들이 입고 다니던 옷인 ‘양모’라는 뜻의 수프(uf)에서 유래했다고 한다. 수피즘은 도취 상태에서 지상(至上)의 경지를 체험하는 것을 목표로 하고 있는데, 타와클(신뢰)?마리파(은총)?파나(망아)와 같은 수피즘 특유의 용어가 그러한 경향을 표현하고 있다. 수피즘은 12～13세기의 사회적 혼란기에 대중화되기 시작해 타리까라고 불리는 수피 종단이 결성되어 사회운동으로 발전하고, 정치?경제?사회?문화 등에서 큰 영향력을 발휘하면서 이슬람 세계 전역으로 확대되어갔다. 이 시기는 오스만 왕조 투르크가 14세기 이후 소아시아에서 발칸 반도로 세력을 확대하고 있었고, 16세기 초 술레이만 대제는 소아시아와 멀리 발칸 반도와 예멘에 이르기까지 지중해 주변 아랍 지역들을 정복해 통일 국가를 이루고, 술탄은 칼리프라고 자칭하여 수니파 이슬람 세계의 수호자로 등장한 혼란스러운 시기였다.

이렇게 이 책은 아직은 우리에게 낯선 수피즘의 세계를, 수피 스승들이 직접 등장해 토론하고 대화하면서 수피즘의 사상과 실천이 어디로 나아가고 있는지 보여주고 있다. 참인간, 하나님은, 원형으로 존재한다기보다 인간이 자신의 겹겹의 층들을 뚫고 들어가 ‘자아’에서 벗어나 ‘진실’을 찾아가는 긴 여정 속에 있다는 것을 깨닫게 된다. “전체 인류가 하나인 몸이요 모든 나라와 민족과 공동체들은 그 몸의 서로 다른 지체임을 깨달아서 계급, 신조, 인종, 국가, 종교의 경계를 넘어 인류를 세계 동포로 하나 되게 하는 것이오. 그들 모든 지체들의 행복과 안녕이 곧 전체 몸의 행복과 안녕이오. 수피즘은 온 인류의 부르짖음에 대한 답이오”라는 저자가 전하는 수피 메시지의 목적은 ‘참나’를 찾아가는 과정이 단독자로서의 수행을 넘어서는 것이고, 이 세상에서 진리를 찾아가는 종교와 인류의 스승들이 전하는 메시지와 다르지 않은 것임을 알 수 있게 한다.

Vilayat Inayat Khan (19 June 1916 – 17 June 2004) was a teacher of meditation and of the traditions of the East Indian Chishti Sufi order of Sufism. His teaching derived from the tradition of his father, Inayat Khan, founder of The Sufi Order in the West (now named the Ināyati Order), in a form tailored to the needs of Western seekers. One of his sisters was Noor Inayat Khan GC MBE. He taught in the tradition of Universal Sufism. His parents met at the New York City ashram of American yogi, Pierre Bernard, half-brother of his mother Pirani Ameena Begum.[1]
Prior to his teaching career he worked in London as an assistant to Ghulam Mohammed, the Finance Minister of Pakistan in 1949, and served as a personal assistant to Pakistan Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan during his visit to England. [2][3]
In 1975 he founded the Abode of the Message, which serves as the central residential community of the Sufi Order International, a conference and retreat center, and a center of esoteric study.[4]

Vilayat Inayat Khan died on 17 June 2004, two days before his 88th birthday.[9] His son is Zia Inayat Khan.[10] His Dargah is located in Delhi, India.

If you are seeking authentic wisdom from an authentic teacher, this is it. The format is unorthodox; the content is amazing. I cannot imagine not being touched by the beauty in this book, no matter your religious background. It is indeed a treasure created by a connoisseur and master of true mysticism. This was, I believe, the last book he worked on, other than his extraordinary meditation manual - The Ecstacy Beyond Knowing, which was only recently, finally published after much work. It may be my favorite of his books. It can hit you very hard, but in a wonderful and powerfully positive way. His other books are also excellent, but this one is totally unique. I agree with the other reviewer who said the book is like a meditation in itself - and a very deep one if you let it be. As with all things mystical, your mileage may vary, but I do not believe you can possibly go wrong with this one! Pir Vilayat was a mystic whose presence I have never seen matched. He was the real thing. Before I met him, I did not believe such people actually existed at all outside of myth or delusional experience. Extraordinary mystic in every way. I hope you enjoy the book.

This book is a creative dialogue between Sufi masters throughout the ages, taking place in the sacred atmosphere of the divine unity of the spiritual hierarchy. As other reviewers have noted, it is beautifully illustrated, and the feeling running through it is one of both crystalline intelligence and unbounded joy.
You cannot help but catch the spark by reading these pages. I recommend it to all whose hearts long for the indescribable bliss of union with the One Being.
The one qualm I have with the book is the first sentence of the dust jacket's inner flap, which reads: "Sufism is the mystical dimension of Islam, and represents both a vision and a spiritual path that exists on the periphery of the main religion, yet at the same time embodies its deepest truth." This statement is strikingly at odds with the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan, Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan's father and teacher, who described Sufism as the essence of all religions, yet belonging to none. Khan argues Sufism is to Islam as green is to Ireland -- the color has become associated with the country, yet it would be silly to suggest that there was no green before there was Ireland.
What masterpiece could exist that does not contain one exquisite flaw?

This is an electric book. You can literally feel the currents flow out of the atmosphere Pir Vilayat book invokes.
The reader is placed in a timeless setting (ie. the imaginal plane) with the great Islamic and Sufi figures throughout time.
While sitting in the presence of these great sages, timeless, practical truths, strange utterances and sweet devotion all strike the reader's heart as if a bell is sounded.
I suggest reading this book as a form of contemplation. Any student of spirituality will find benefit in its pages.

Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan gets 'it.' Here is a Deep Sufism, a Deep Monotheism, that literally goes to the Heart of the matter. Read it if you actually get It, because this is not a text for those who do not. The organization is great, the premise is traditional and wonderful, and Khan puts you at the feet of the masters (himself, rightly, included). The tradition of Khan is deeply rational and deeply super-rational, and this text is squarely in that tradition.
