5.0 out of 5 stars Charles Johnston's Translation is Superior.Reviewed in the United States on 10 February 2012

This Version of the Crest-Jewel of Wisdom is by far the most accurate and esoteric translation, imo.
Also known as Crest Jewel of Discernment, and Crest Jewel of Discrimination. Viveka Chudamani.
This publisher's Type set and other changes as mentioned by them, do make this one of the best, most readable, and affordable reprints available; please see the link at the bottom. Many of Sankara's other great writings are also included. You will not find them else where.
The Original 1946 Theosophical University Press Covina version is a Great edition also if it is at a reasonable price.
I would get an original Pristine copy too after the Reprint is read.
The 1964 Watkins version is a complete rewrite that
he made after 30 years of discovering other Spiritual Paths. Though both are worth having ... I would go with this version first if you desire a 'True Essence' translation. Just my 2 cents.
The Amazon link below has a good alternative, for $8
The link below's version has all the translations and is complete in that respect, without the extraneous views and opinions of the Translator.

5.0 out of 5 stars A profound and beautiful translation.Reviewed in the United States on 25 September 2019

This book provides a more penetrating insight into Adi Sankara's teaching than any biography or textual analysis can.
It must be read very slowly and savored. Interestingly, it is probably better to know quite a bit about the teaching first.

I have always looked for a 'common thread' that links all of manifested creation- as I am sure many have and many will. This human struggle comes from an attempt to understand our spot in the universe in relationship to evey body and everything else. Shankaracharya has given us his very valuable teachings that allow us to see that connection between the Self and the Eternal. I very much appreciate Me. Johnston's succinct translations with numbered guides to the specific shlokas in the original text. His interpretations are also very good and to me appear to be very apt and precise. A hard bound edition is always a nicer experience to hold and read.
