4.0 out of 5 starsConflict, Discipleship and Social Justice in God's World...August 8, 2014

I would give this book 5 stars if it was laid out a bit better to make it more visually appealing for participants in a small group. I will be facilitating a course using this text at The Riverside Church in NYC (fall 2014). I think the team of authors have done a good job of breaking the text down into manageable weekly sections for lay people to study. I think that I'll be able to fit the 25 fairly short chapters into a 1-semester course (though other churches whose members don't study the Bible, or don't read much, may want to take a full year). The writers do a good job of picking out the most interesting details of the scripture passages which relate to the socio-political times in which Jesus lived. I especially like that each chapter ends with a mini-essay on a specific modern social justice issue which relates to the particular Bible passage read. I think it's important to read the biblical text understanding the specific historical time period it was written in (70 CE) and talks about (much earlier)... and THEN relate those issues, to similar issues happening in our day and age.

5.0 out of 5 starsMust Read, an Essential Study of Mark's GospelDecember 2, 2016
Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase
One of the two best treatements of Mark's Gospel I have ever read or studied in 26 years of pastoral ministry. I very highly recommend this book both for its scholarship and its insightful application to radical discipleship in our times. I would catagorize this book as a must read for anyone in the band of 21st century Jesus followers and for those inquiring as to just what that is intended to be.

4.0 out of 5 starsA fresh and thought provoking look at the message of Christ. What are we doing To make the message of Christ relevant in our world.March 24, 2018
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase
The writers succeed in bringing the message of Christ out of the church and into the street. How does the modern church address the modern world. Too often it fails. The message of Christ is that there is no shame in failing , the shame is in acceptance and denial.

A popularization of Myers' Binding the Strong Man, Say to This Mountain is accessible for the average reader. I have never written a review for Amazon before, but because I loved these two books so much, I couldn't resist. Binding the Strong Man was such an influence on me, that I have recommended Say to this Mountain to both students and church Bible Studies alike.

5.0 out of 5 starsThe Liberation Theology of the Gospel of MarkFebruary 20, 2015

A good introduction to liberation theology in light of the Gospel of Mark. However, as the authors interpret the entire Gospel the same way, it is very redundant.
