“통전적 신학은 한국교회를 대변하는 한국교회의 신학이다.”
통전적 신학은 1984년 이종성 박사가 자신의 「그리스도론」을 저술하면서 통전적 그리스도론이라는 이름을 붙이면서 시작되었다. 이 신학은 한국장로교회의 중심이라고 할 수 있는 장로회신학대학교를 비롯한 한국장로교회 통합 측에 속한 7개 신학대학교의 신학을 설명할 수 있는 가장 적합한 표현이다. 이 신학은 1985년 장로회 신학대학교의 교수회가 발표한 신학성명과 2001년 발표된 장로회신학대학교의 신학교육성명의 내용을 함축한 것이다. 이 신학은 최근에 온 신학이라는 이름을 갖고 발전하고 있다. 온 신학은 통전적 신학이란 한자적 표현을 순수한 한글로 표현한 것이다. 나아가, 통전적 신학은 한국장로교회를 대표하는 신학일 뿐 아니라 한국교회를 대변하는 한국교회의 신학이다. 그 이유는 소수의 교회만이 받아들인 민중신학과 달리 통전적 신학을 자신의 신학으로 받아들이고 있는 한국의 교회가 엄청나게 많기 때문이다.
이번에 영문으로 출간되는 「통전적 신학」은 2004년 한국어로 이미 출간된 것이다. 장로회신학대학교의 통전적 신학자들에 의해 연구된 통전적 신학의 핵심 내용이 학술적으로 잘 정리되어 있다. 처음 4장에서는 김명용 총장이 “통전적 신학이란 무엇인가”, “이종성의 통전적 신학”, “통전적 교회론”, “통전적 영성신학”에 대해 논하고, 제5장에서는 윤철호 교수가 “통전적 기독론”이라는 제하에 역사적 예수와 신앙의 그리스도의 문제 및 성육신과 구속의 교리를 함께 다루고, 제6장과 제7장에서는 현요한 교수가 “하나님의 평화로운 삶”과 “생명의 근원으로서 생명의 영”을 논하고, 2004년 한국어판에는 빠져 있지만 영문번역판에 추가된 제8장에서는 김도훈 교수가 “이종성 박사의 생애와 신학”을 다루고 있다.
이종성의 통전적 신학은 지금도 끊임없이 계승되고 발전되고 있다. 이 영어번역본의 출판은 통전적 신학에 대한 이해가 전세계적으로 확산되는 계기를 마련할 것으로 기대된다.
“Holistic theology is a representative theology that speaks for the Korean Church.”
Holistic theology came about when Dr. Jong Sung Rhee described holistic Christology in his book, Christology in 1984. It is the most fitting expression that describes the theology of the seven theological seminaries of the Presbyterian Church of Korea, including Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary (PUTS), which could be said to be the center of the Korean Presbyterian Church. It is the distillation of PUTS’s 1985 Statement of Theology and 2001 Philosophy of Theological Education. Rhee’s holistic theology has also been recently developing under a name, Ohn Theology. ‘Ohn’ in Ohn Theology is a pure Korean description of the holistic theology that derives its meaning from Chinese characters. Morever, holistic theology represents not only the Korean Presbyterian Church in particular, but also the Korean Church in general, since the numbers of Korean churches that embrace it as their own are by far the majority.
This English translation was first published in Korean in 2004. It lays out well the core contents of the holistic theology developed by its representative scholars at PUTS. In the first four chapters Myung Yong Kim discusses “What is Holistic Theology,” “Jong Sung Rhee’s Holistic Theology,” “Holistic Ecclesiology,” and “Holistic Spiritual Theology.” Then in Chapter 5 Chulho Youn deals with the historical Jesus and Christ of faith as well as doctrines of incarnation and atonement under the title of “Holistic Christology.” In Chapters 6 and 7 Yo-Han Hyun discusses “God’s Peaceful Life” and “The Spirit of Life as the Source of Life.” In the final chapter, which was missing in the earlier Korean edition and is now added, Do-Hoon Kim describes “The Life and Theology of Chungye Jong Sung Rhee.”
Rhee’s holistic theology continues to be developed and inherited. The publication of this English translation is expected to promote the worldwide spread of the holistic theology.
