3.0 out of 5 stars Good information - unpleasantly preachy.Reviewed in the United States on 5 June 2018

I read this book for a class. There was definitely some useful information, especially for someone new to ecology and other natural sciences. What I really didn't like was that every one of the mini essays ultimately took a dark "the world is ending" turn. Yes, people are ruining the environment in every conceivable way, and yes, it's a huge problem, but I'm the biggest tree hugging hippie I know and even I got tired of the soapboxiness.

4.0 out of 5 stars We are not Human Centered!!Reviewed in the United States on 6 May 2014

I thought this book was really interesting. Ernest Callenbach explains how even something so thin and unseen like air is a big global circulator in connecting all parts of life. In my sustainability class we spoke about how cutting off river source eliminates water and food source for many walks of life. Everything is interconnected with each other. Callenbach talks about how air is obviously critical to the balance of everyday life. We take in oxygen from plants around us and return the favor with carbon dioxide.
He also talks about biodiversity within an ecosystem. He explains how an ecosystem benefits from having a more species. We also spoke about how an ecosystem fails because of human disturbance. The ecosystem is impoverished by the pavement and built on land that won’t support these species anymore. He explains that a thriving ecosystem is one that hasn’t been disturbed therefore has a large variety of species.
It is important that different people from different disciplines use the same references and definition because in order to follow a word or a phrase one has to abide in contexts of the meaning. Taking bits and pieces of a word or phrase leaves an open end to reference it and it starts to loose its true meaning.
Fashion companies want to be sold on what will benefit them. Aesthetically the sustainable materials presented need to show promise. Also trying to improve the quality of life, education, and technology includes the audience of these fashion companies. This pocket guide really shows how life isn’t human centered and that there is so many different aspects we contribute to it.

Easy to read guide for biology. I took AP Bio back in highschool but forgot a lot of it. This was a great and easy to read refresher on a lot of the concepts I had already learned.
