I originally read this book when it was published in 1974, for the simple reason that over two decades earlier Dr. Trueblood had profoundly influenced my life. I write this review with the original copy of 1974 in front of me, which was signed by some of Trueblood's personal friends at Guilford College. 

His lectures at my undergraduate college helped to define the career path which I followed over the next sixty-plus years. What happened with me no doubt was similar to what happened with many other students at that time, as Trueblood focused much attention on traveling widely and lecturing on the campuses of small Christian colleges and universities. He was a product of such an environment, and related well to students in that context. 

He was very welcoming to me personally when I asked to spend some time with him in a one-on-one conversation. No, I did not imitate Trueblood and become a philosophy professor or author of many famous books. 

I even acted against his main thesis, that Christian lay persons must be the leaven within society, for I became an ordained clergy. 

He did promote the idea that pastors and teachers are to be the "coaches" that help all Christians to live effectively in society, equipping all of God's people for their service in the world. 

I tried to follow his advice to do the following things: 

(1) Have intellectual integrity in all that ones thinks and does. 
(2) Practice a deep and genuine spiritual life, and 
(3) Extend one's beliefs in practical application in society - do something hands-on and useful in solving a real problem. 

I make no claim of doing any of this in a perfect way. But the ideal is there all the time. As Trueblood says in this book, "What each person can do, however, is to meditate upon the consequences of the decisions actually made, realizing that each decision leads to much beyond itself." It is now more than four decades since While It Is Day was published, yet its message is as valuable today as it was then. A student of today could benefit much by investigating what Dr. Elton Trueblood represents.
