Many Christian theologians have associated beauty, both in nature and art, with the Holy Spirit. They include early Fathers like St Irenaeus and St Clement of Alexandria, as well as later writers like Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Sergius Bulgakov and Hans Urs von Balthasar. This text investigates what they said and why. In doing so, it also serves as an introduction to the whole area of theological aesthetics. Besides exploring the connection between the Holy Spirit and beauty, it ranges more widely by considering topics such as divine glory, inspiration and the eschatological character of beauty. Its discussions bring together two areas of lively interest in contemporary the theology of the Holy Spirit and theological aesthetics.

Sherry is a superb scholar and writer, and 'Spirit and Beauty' offers many great insights into two subjects that are rarely considered, and even more rarely considered together.

One of the very best books I've read on the subject of theological aesthetics. Not a new book. First published in 1982 , in fact, but in the space of a few short chapters, Patrick Sherry lays a firm Biblical foundation for the association of the role of the Holy Spirit with the beauty of God and with artistic beauty.

This is one book which shall forever remain on my theological aesthetics reference bookshelf.

Spirit, Saints, and Immortality Paperback – June 30, 1984
by Patrick Sherry (Author)
5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

This book is a philosophical and theological study of the claim that the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which produces sanctity, is an anticipation of a future state.

Focusing on Christianity, Patrick Sherry investigates the grounds of this belief, examining the interconnections between the ideas of the spirit of God, saintliness, and immortality.

Throughout, Sherry argues “that the existence of saintly people is of much more importance than is usually realized, for it is a rare and precious occurrence which requires evaluation and explanation.”

The existence of saints raises questions about the attainment of likeliness to God, about grace, and redemption.
Sherry’s study gives essential and illuminating answers.

Review
“This book reopens an interesting and profitable set of questions which have long been neglected by the academic world. The reopening is overdue, and Sherry is to be congratulated on having taken this initiative. In these days when we are acutely conscious of the difficulty, or impossibility, of directly establishing the metaphysical claims of religion, it seems clear that the fruits of religious faith in human life, and particularly the production of the spiritual and moral giants whom we call saints, must constitute important religious evidence. Sherry examines the concept of sainthood, its connection with the idea of the Spirit, its significance as a first stage of human transformation into ‘the likeness of God,’ and the way in which it requires the idea of continued life after death.” ― John Hick
