The theology professor explains the similarities and differences between the holy texts of Christianity and Islam calmly and always objectively. Gnilka wants to provide reliable information and not speculate, although he certainly presents different interpretations and perspectives of older and modern (predominantly Christian) theology and (for the sake of brevity) discusses them to some extent.
Readers get exactly what the book's title and the short text of the publisher's announcement promise: A sufficient overview of what separates and connects biblical and Koranic teaching. Hadith and Sira on the one hand and Jewish and Christian apocrypha on the other are left out (apart from very short excursions). Likewise, historical aspects of the religious founders Jesus and Mohammed (with whom the volume begins) only play a role insofar as information on them appears necessary in order to create a sufficient basis for the theological explanations.

In any case, it quickly becomes clear (theologically) that Jesus as the "Son of God" and Mohammed (as the inspired/as a prophet) play very different roles from the point of view of Christian interpretation.
At the center of the small volume are general and formal comparisons of the Holy Scriptures (including origin, evaluation and appreciation, structure and structures as well as linguistic aspects).

In the main part, the central religious themes are discussed, such as
  • the image of God,
  • the theme of creation,
  • the mission of God,
  • the image of man or
  • eschatology.
Finally, essential differences and similarities are summarized and compared. A short bibliography, notes and a job index complete the small work.

All in all a very good, albeit brief and somewhat cursory work that serves as an introduction. Gnilka's presentation, argumentation and conclusions are balanced, unexcited and undoubtedly serve more to provide objective information than a tendentious statement. Nevertheless - the author never forgets his Christian roots in the sense of a clear orientation towards his own points of view.
The book is not written in a very complex manner and is excellently suited for an  introduction to the subject (particularly for non-theologians), even though a certain solidity of the Bible and knowledge of theological terminology are sensible prerequisites. Gnilka uses the translation of Rudi Paret for the German text parts of the Koran.

I have no problems reading the font size. Beautifully designed, yet simple, exactly what I wanted. Paper has standard pages in terms of thickness, those of my Elberfeld Study Bible are thinner. Can only recommend this piece a very well done design. Regarding the content, everyone has to decide for themselves which version they prefer in the end. From my point of view there is nothing to complain about in terms of value for money.

A very competently prepared specialist book, but not for readers who have not yet dealt with Islam and Christianity. A very serious work by a recognized theologian. It doesn't cover the whole spectrum of the topic but gives good information.

A wonderful and profound compilation, unfortunately too thick and unwieldy for me, so I will order it again from Reader. The current owner of the book is enthusiastic.
