In a world of conflict and strife, how can we be advocates of peace and justice?

In this volume acclaimed scholar-monk Bhikkhu Bodhi has collected and translated the Buddha’s teachings on conflict resolution, interpersonal and social problem-solving, and the forging of harmonious relationships. The selections, all drawn from the Pali Canon, the earliest record of the Buddha’s discourses, are organized into ten thematic chapters. The chapters deal with such topics as the quelling of anger, good friendship, intentional communities, the settlement of disputes, and the establishing of an equitable society. Each chapter begins with a concise and informative introduction by the translator that guides us toward a deeper understanding of the texts that follow.

In times of social conflict, intolerance, and war, the Buddha’s approach to creating and sustaining peace takes on a new and urgent significance. Even readers unacquainted with Buddhism will appreciate these ancient teachings, always clear, practical, undogmatic, and so contemporary in flavor. The Buddha’s Teachings on Social and Communal Harmony will prove to be essential reading for anyone seeking to bring peace into their communities and into the wider world.

Bodhi

Bodhi was introduced to the concept of Eastern meditation in the 1970s. He adopted this hybrid lifestyle around a regular life pursuits that included profession and family just like the many other Western aspirants who began pursuing this concept Eastern Enlightenment at that time. In the nearly 50 years since that time, he has been obsessively engaged in a disciplined and regular use of these Eastern techniques and the study of their philosophies and science while actively engaged in an otherwise fully normal active Western lifestyle. He has been a lifelong student of science and mathematics and actively engaged in his ongoing homegrown enlightenment experiment in pursuit of the Ultimate Truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Governance with Integrity, Accountability, and TransparencyReviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 April 2017

Once again, Bhikku Boddhi has produced a very important publication on Buddhism. Buddha’s teachings are vast and on many subjects. This particular publication provides detailed source evidence of what the Buddha said and did on creating a community on intent. He was the first spiritual leader to establish an order for monks and nuns, in collaboration with a large following. From this publication, we learn how the Buddha actually dealt with issues, such as governance, transparency and accountability of all -- monks, nuns and lay persons -- to the spiritual truth. In his day, the Buddha dealt with group interests, power struggles and grabs, in-fighting and arguments -- the stuff of present day religious experience. It is heartening to read that the Buddha never hid anything under the carpet. He was open and transparent about dealing with issues. The publication also shows how he inter-acted with the rulers of his time and then devised the ten important principles of governance. The sections on the Vinaya and its application -- to deal with dissent, conflict resolution, and justice -- is progressive. So are the rules and conventions that were followed on the way both minor and major resolutions should be adopted. Some of these sections read like the guidelines of the Charity Commission on good governance for charities. This publication is a must for all those involved in Buddhist institutions how to govern professionally and widely.
