종교개혁자이자 개신교 신학의 아버지인 마르틴 루터는 1483년 11월 10일 독일 아이스레벤에서 광부의 아들로 태어났다. 만스펠트와 아이제나흐에서 학창시절을 보낸 뒤, 1501년 에르푸르트 대학교에 입학하여 1502년과 1505년에 각각 문학사와 문학석사 학위를 받는다. 출세를 열망하던 아버지의 강권으로 법대 박사 과정에 진학하지만, 슈토테른하임에서 만난 뇌우 아래서 수도사가 되기로 서원한다. 곧바로 학업을 중단하고 2주 만에 에르푸르트의 아우구스티누스 수도원에 입회하여, 1507년 사제로 안수받게 된다. 1512년 비텐베르크 대학교에서 신학박사 학위를 받은 이래로 성서학을 가르치며 발견한 ‘칭의’의 진리는 그로 하여금 종교개혁자의 길을 걷게 만든다. 1517년 10월 31일 면죄부 판매에 반대하여 비텐베르크 성채 교회당 정문에 내건 ‘95개조 논제’는 종교개혁을 촉발하는 동시에 중세 시대에 종말을 고하는 신호탄이 된다. 교황의 파문과 보름스 제국의회에서의 추방령(1521년), 농민전쟁(1525년), 수녀원에서 탈출한 카타리나 폰 보라와의 결혼(1525년) 등 1546년 2월 18일 63세의 나이로 고향 아이스레벤에서 숨을 거두기까지 수많은 논쟁과 굴곡의 시기를 거치지만, 교회 공동체를 사랑하는 목회자이자 말씀에 사로잡힌 신학자로서 개신교 신학의 대문을 열게 된다.

이 책을 집을 때, 기도하고 싶은 마음이 들어서 집었다면 성공이다. 짧지만 다 읽고 난 후에 기도하고 싶어진다. 기도만 하는 것보다 말씀을 읽고 싶어진다. 가장 빠르게 기도의 자리로 가고 싶다면, 가장 쉽고 확실한 기도의 방법이 궁금하다면 이 책이면 충분하다.

Nothing changes in the Bible.
God's Word of the Old Testament and the Scriptures of The New Testament which are inextricably linked one to another.
In this short book Martin Luther in 1535. wrote an explanation of how to pray for an old friend. It explains the Lord’s Prayer section by section in a most readable way. It then goes on to explain the Ten Commandments in much fuller detail followed by an explanation of what is behind the Creed. This is a statement of our belief in God our Father, Jesus Christ His Son and the Holy Spirit.
It is all as completely relevant today as it was in 1535. In fact we are told that the book has never been out of print since it was written.

This is Luther's short essay to his barber describing how to pray. He goes through the Lord's Prayer, each of the commandments, and the three articles of the creed. He echoes much of the catechism.
"Again, you have occasion here to ponder long about everything that the Holy Spirit accomplishes in the church every day, etc. Therefore be thankful that you have been called and have come into such a church. Confess and lament your lack of faith and gratitude, that you have neglected all this, and pray for a true and steadfast faith that will remain and endure until you come to that place where all endures forever, that is, beyond the resurrection from the dead, in life eternal. Amen."

This book and this version (Harrison translator) was recommended by Emily Whitten on World podcast, 10/3/17. Whitten says she was made aware of the book by R. C. Sproul, who has written a children’s book about it, The Barber Who Wanted to Pray, published 2011.
There is much that is quotable here in this short, 11-page essay.
Sproul says that Luther’s small book changed his prayer life. Sproul’s children’s book tells the true story about Luther going to his barber and his barber asking him how to pray.
The subheading reads: Prayer, the Lord's Prayer, the 10 Commandments, and the Creed. A Letter to His Barber, Master Peter Beskendorf, Spring 1535. (less)

Quick little book on prayer. When asked by his barber how to pray, this was Luther's response. The concept is simple - go through the Lord's Prayer, the 10 commandments, the Apostle's creed, and follow a 4-fold method of identifying what the passage teaches, thanking God, confessing failures to live up to the passage, and making petitions in line with the passage - and the book is mostly examples of how to pray this way. I went through this book quickly after being bombarded with sermons on prayer from various sources for the past month at least, so I was feeling as if God really wanted me to evaluate how my prayer life was. I mean I prayed, actively, multiple times a day by the point of reading this book...but once I heard Luther prayed for hours daily and scheduled things around that, I was interested in knowing more. I didn't read this version of the book-I found what was an older release through ThriftBooks and read that instead of this Kindle version. It's a short read. Written for his barber-you can tell, because it was a straightforward read. I enjoyed both the brevity and concise nature of how he wrote things. This edition also included some questions I wish I'd have acknowledged before reading because I think they would've set me up better for what followed, but even afterward they helped reflect on what Luther discussed. This is one of those "hey you, Christian...read this!" books that transcends denominational affiliation in my opinion. I enjoyed this one, y'all! (less)

Martin Luther's method of prayer is essentially to pray out scripture in a way that expands on and personalizes each verse. A great framework for helping Christians grow in their prayers; meant to be taken as a guide, not as rule or law.
He divides the Lord's prayer into seven separate petitions: (1) hallowed be Thy name, (2) Thy kingdom come, (3) Thy will be done, (4) give us this day our daily bread, (5) forgive us our trespasses, (6) lead us not into temptation, and (7) deliver us from evil.
When Luther prays the ten commandements, he divides each commandment into four parts: (1) instruction, (2) thanksgiving, (3) confession, and (4) asking prayer.
Quotes:
"Do not leave your prayer without having said or thought, 'Very well, God has heard my prayer; this I know as a certainty and a truth.' That is what Amen means."
"If such an abundance of good thoughts comes to us we ought to disregard the other petitions, make room for such thoughts, listen in silence, and under no circumstances obstruct them. The Holy Spirit himself preaches here, and one word of his sermon is far better than a thousand of our prayers. Many times I have learned more from one prayer than I might have learned from much reading and speculation."

Excellent little book on prayer. Though I sometimes have issues with the older style of writing, I definitely enjoyed this book and found it useful for me. The pattern of prayer takes fully into consideration our lives under simul justus et peccator. (Being both saint and sinner). It encourages, but it also recognizes our failures, past and future. Most of all it shows us a gracious God that we can come bow a knew to in repentance.

So, you have Martin Luther in your barber's chair: what do you ask him? Peter Beskendorf asked his customer and friend for advice on how to pray. The result was this precious little offering. Luther's goal here was to suggest ways to prepare one's heart for prayer, using the Lord's Prayer, The 10 Commandments, and the Apostle's Creed as texts on which to mediate, bit by bit, as a way "into" an attitude of receptiveness to what the Spirit has to say at that moment.
Luther clarifies that this isn't about repeating memorized text. it's about setting one's mind on the things of God, and then leaving room for the Holy Spirit to speak: "if in the midst of such thoughts the Holy Spirit begins to preach in your heart...honor him by letting go of this written scheme; be still and listen to Him who can do better than you can" (38). If you’re feeling stuck in your prayer life and are looking for some insight, this book is worth taking a look at. At 30 pages, it’s a short read but offers suggestions that are worthwhile.
Luther opens up ways to pray through the 10 Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Apostles’ Creed. This is not a book that gives you word for word prayers that you should use in your own prayer closet; instead he gives you examples of things that you can pull out of God’s Word to help you draw closer to God. Absolutely wonderful book in my opinion. It is short (can be finished within an hour or two) and it helps very much is what to pray about, and for. I always wondered how anyone can pray for so long, and after I finally read the short book I realised that there is so much that I can pray about that I have not been doing. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who seems to be struggling in their prayer life.

This book will help anyone who struggles with finding words to express ourselves in prayer to our gracious, so eternal, life giving and sustaining God. The scope and breadth of how to think of myself in light of who God is has been deeply helpful and humbling. It's a book worth reading often, committing it to one's mind with intention and delight. A short, simple book which will change your prayer life. Sometimes we have difficulty verbalizing to God in prayer the things on our hearts and minds. This approach, utilizing the words of scripture (or even the Apostles Creed), allows us to start with a framework from which to start, improving the quality and the devotion of our prayers immeasurably.
From a literary and historical standpoint, this is a book which reveals the pastoral heart of a man who is so often caricatured as angry, or even verbally abusive. However, Martin Luther was much more than a man who refused to sugarcoat his opinions, and wrote this book as a way to guide his church members (specifically his barber) in better fellowship with the Lord. A small booklet on prayer. It was taken from a letter written to Peter the Barber from Luther himself. This essay of sorts packs in a lot of content. Luther leads the barber through the Lord’s Prayer and the Ten Commandments. It maybe a little strange in some parts because it includes events current to that time period and locale. I believe this booklet has been translated many times. My review is based on the translation of C.J. Trapp. I mention this to draw attention to the preface of this version. I think it is key to understanding the main part a little better. A solid, quick read.

Luther gives a simple outline to pray, "a garland of four strands" and demonstrates it through the Lord's Prayer, the 10 Commandments, and the Creed. This book is typical Luther, a bit abrasive to today's culture, but all in all a very instructive, approachable, and worshipful guide teaching how to pray written prayers. (less)

Luther’s pithy prayer primer is brief but helpful in engaging with the Bible in prayer. The ITCP format is also helpful as an aid to prayer. Luther provides help whilst recognising it is not a prayer system to be repeated but a helpful pattern to guide and shape.
