This newly updated Second Edition of Daoist Cultivation, Book 1: Fundamental Theory and Philosophy offers a significantly refined and enriched reading experience. While the number of pages remains approximately the same, the content has been carefully restructured and expanded — many original illustrations were removed to create space for substantial new material and a more focused, in-depth presentation.
What’s New and Improved:-- Expanded Depth: Core principles such as the Three Treasures (Jing, Qi, Shen), the Three Dantian, and the Central Channel (Zhong Mai) are now explained with greater clarity and structure, guiding the reader through each stage of internal transformation.
-- Classical Sources: Original teachings and symbolism from classical Daoist texts — including the Xiuzhen Tu and Taijitu Shuo — are now fully integrated into the theoretical framework, showing their relevance to internal cultivation.
-- New Content: Entirely new chapters have been added, such as Levels of External Qi, Ling Qi, Hunran Yi Qi, and a revised and expanded presentation of Daoist Cosmology, connecting Neidan practice with cosmological unfolding.
-- Terminological Clarity: Terms such as Yuan Qi, Ling Qi, Zhen Qi, Zheng Qi, and Hunran Yi Qi are now clearly defined and contextualized. Key distinctions — such as between Pre-Heaven and Post-Heaven energies, or between Yuan Qi and Ling Qi — are clearly defined, with consistent Chinese terminology used throughout.
-- Visual and Conceptual Refinement: Though some illustrations were removed, new flowcharts, tables, and symbolic diagrams have been added to help readers internalize the structure and logic of Daoist theory.
Despite these additions, the book remains accessible to all levels — whether you are just entering the Daoist path or seeking a deeper framework to support your cultivation. This second edition presents a clearer, more mature articulation of the foundations of Daoist internal practice and serves as a practical companion to the unfolding series.
This book also provides detailed explanations of essential terms such as Qigong, Neigong, Neidan, Jing–Qi–Shen, Wu Xing, Ming Gong, and Xing Gong, making it an ideal resource for both beginners and experienced practitioners.
It presents the principles of Yin–Yang and Wu Xing (Five Phases) with a traditional lens, restoring the deeper meaning often omitted or misunderstood in modern interpretations.
Special attention is given to key topics such as:-- "The Gate of All Marvelous-Mysterious" — a vital inner state required for returning to the Primordial
-- "Centers and Channels" — a practical explanation of the Dantians, energy system, and meridians, including visual diagrams of the 12 primary and 8 extraordinary channels
-- "Building the Foundation", "Body Foundation", "Heart-Mind Foundation", and "Virtue Cultivation" — core stages for beginning the Daoist path
This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in traditional Daoist methods of self-development, as well as those practicing Qigong, Neigong, Neidan, or Taiji (Taichi).

Vitaly Filbert
Vitaly Filbert began studying Daoist arts with Grandmaster Lü Shiyang in 1998. He spent extensive time in China exploring Daoist teachings—making pilgrimages to sacred sites in China and Nepal, living in mountain monasteries, and immersing himself in spiritual practice.
Over the years, Vitaly trained in various arts including Qigong, Neigong, Taichi (Yang style), Xing Yi, Dao Yin, and Daoist Inner Alchemy (Neidan).
In 2011, he founded the first Daoist Centre in Ukraine, aiming to spread knowledge of the Daoist tradition and revive the millennia-old art of “nurturing life” (養生, yangsheng)—to enhance physical and psychological well-being for those seeking balance and harmony.
Since 2013, Vitaly has shared the teachings of the Zhen Dao school in London. A few years later, he moved to Los Angeles, where he continues to pass on his knowledge and guidance to others.
He is currently writing a series of books on Daoist cultivation, illuminating the deeper aspects of Daoist philosophy and traditional methods of self-development.

This book is put together really well with key teachings being highlighted for emphasis. The author is clearly very knowledgeable in the science of self cultivation. A teacher is indispensable to one's practice but as the author points out, if one is sincere, heaven does take note of their efforts. I hope cultivators will not miss this book series and I, too, hope to finish it to refine my personal practice. People who practice Yoga, Qi Gong should not pass these up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just methods - a guide to essential stateReviewed in Germany on 17 August 2024

I started to learn Daoist methods about 5 years ago in the daoist center created by Vitaly in Ukraine, from his disciples. However, after the first half year of practice I moved to Austria for my master studies and had to continue on my own. Excited by inspiration and interesting effects I was experiencing, I was still practicing fanatically, but sometimes I felt like I am stuck in a wild forest, my emotions went out of control and soon my body got dry from exhaustion.
Unexpectedly, when I had no psychological powers left and even my physical health became unstable, I learned that Vitaly wrote a book. I didn’t use to read books on this topic and preferred just to investigate methods on my own experience, but that time reading was the only thing that left for me, so I decided to give it a try.
Most of information in the book was familiar to me from seminars I visited in Ukraine. However, while reading I sensed that there was something more than just information, as it magically helped me to return into so long forgotten peace and presence. I started practicing again, now on my own experience discovering how important is to have right intention, direction and state of mind.
About a year ago I had a conference in US, and decided to visit Vitaly in LA on my way back - this was the first time I was going to meet him in person. We had just few friendly conversations during hiking or watching the sea, but they brought a shift in the depth of my understanding I will never forget.
At that time Vitaly translated classic Daoist texts (his later books). Before I had barriers always stopping me from reading them - I was worried that will not get the right meaning and just waste my time - but this time they were broken as books contained Vitaly’s comments. Soon I decided to choose Daoist tradition as my main Path, and I am very thankful to Vitaly for sharing it with us.
