사할 [四喝, Sahal]
네 가지 할 (喝). 임제선사 (臨濟禪師)가 학인을 교화하기 위해 제시한 교설.
할 (喝)하는 것에도 때와 장소, 그리고 학인의 근기에 따라
여러 가지 방편이 있음을 보여준 것)
1) 금강왕 (金剛王) 보검의 할 (喝)
2) 땅에 버티고 앉아있는 사자의 할 (喝)
3) 탐지하는 낚시 대의 풀 묶음이란
4) 또 한 가지 할 (喝)은
1) 금강왕 (金剛王) 보검의 할 (喝)
(이것은 한 칼에 온갖 행각 (行脚)과 알음알이를 끊어버리는 것이며)
2) 땅에 버티고 앉아있는 사자의 할 (喝)
(이것은 말을 하거나 입김만 불어도 모든 마구니의 머리가 터지는 것이며)
3) 탐지하는 낚시 대의 풀 묶음이란
(상대방의 콧구멍이 있는 가 또는 없는 가를 탐지하는 것이며)
4) 또 한 가지 할 (喝)은
(한 가지의 할 (喝)로만 쓰이지 않고, 삼현 (三玄)과 사빈주 (四賓主) 같은 것들이 다 갖추어 있다는 것이다)
The four types of Shout! or Katz!: In the Linji School, there are four different expedient types of Shout! or Katzs for teaching the students according to the circumstances and their capability. Cf. (Hal!) Katz!
1) The shout of the King of Diamond means cessation of all kinds of thought and cleverness in the blow of a sword.
2) The shout of a lion lying on its belly means busting the heads of all devils at the moment when its mouth opens or even at the puff of its breath.
3) A batch of grass at the end of a fishing rod refers to trying to find out whether or not a man has a hole in his nose.
4) Another kind of shout is not simply a shout but all the methods combined in addition to the "three sublime teachings" and "the relationship of the teacher and student."
