THE ACCEPTANCE AND IMPACT IN JAPAN
A SUMMARY
To sum up, there were four important events regarding the Lotus Sutra,
- firstly, faith in the Lotus Sutra as one of the sutras for protection of the state in the Asuka and Nara periods,
- second, the foundation of the Tendai Lotus sect by Saicho in the Heian period,
- third, the foundation of the Nichiren Lotus sect in the Kamakura period, and
- fourth, various new religious movements in modern times which were founded on the Lotus Sutra.
Though faith in the Lotus Sutra has disappeared in India and China, these four events had an important influence on the spread of faith in the Lotus Sutra and its continued strength throughout Japan
