Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is the one who "hears the cries of the world" and vows to "assist anyone in distress." As the author embarks on the pilgrimage route that extends from the Japan Sea to the Pacific Ocean, through the ancient city of Kyoto and the modern city of Osaka, and to the many mountain tops in between, she allows the special characteristics and sacred presence of each place to bring forth relevant Buddhist teaching; letting go of attachment, contemplating impermanence, engaging in right livelihood, being of service, and other teachings found in classic Buddhism. The dharma, or doctrines of Universal Truth, intertwines with rich descriptions of mountain hikes, remote temples, modern Shugendo practices, sacred icons and the author's spiritual insights.

Joan D. Stamm

Joan Diane Stamm grew up in a rural community of wheat farmers in North Dakota. Nothing in her upbringing foretold of a later interest in Japan and Japanese culture. During college years an interest in Eastern philosophy developed, but not until 1991, when she moved to Japan to teach English would she participate in her first Zen experience at a training temple in Kobe. An interest in Buddhism deepened during her time in Japan, and further developed upon her return home two years later. She would continue a life-long study and practice of Zen and Tibetan Buddhism, as well as ikebana (the art of Japanese flower design), which would lead to her first book HEAVEN AND EARTH ARE FLOWERS: REFLECTIONS ON IKEBANA AND BUDDHISM.

After many trips to Japan to study ikebana, and many years studying and practicing Buddhism, the idea of a Buddhist pilgrimage was born. In 2012, along with her sister, she embarked on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage of 33 Temples; that same year she co-founded Cold Mountain Hermitage, a Buddhist study and practice group. Her second book, A PILGRIMAGE IN JAPAN: THE 33 TEMPLES OF KANNON recounts this amazing pilgrimage route.

During the 2020 pandemic THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS IN THE TIME OF COVID: REFLECTIONS ON ZEN, NATURE AND IKEBANA was born. After a cancelled trip to Japan to research a flower temple pilgrimage route, Joan explores "flowers as little Buddhas." The Language of Flowers carries us through the seasons of nature, the pandemic and the many political and climate upheavals of that same year.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice read.Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 10 September 2018

Joan is clearly a well read and contemplated Buddhist. It's a nice read so far, very personal. Having read nearly as well so far, helps me to honestly re-affirm my Taoist and Shinto feelings. She adds so many details to Kannon (Gyanjin), I'm reading Journey To The West where Gyuanjin is a guiding force. Buddhism has too much heaven and hell for my taste, read the Dhammapada for a synopsis of what is important. Kudos, Joan, I'm enjoying your words very much.

3.0 out of 5 stars The 33 Temples of KannonReviewed in Japan 🇯🇵 on 14 October 2022

Am not able to comment at the moment as I have not read the book yet. At a glance it seems to be a personal account of the author’s pilgrimage and not about the history and background of the temples which I am interested about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Already anticipating the second reading!Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 28 August 2018

Anyone interested in Pilgrimages and/or Buddhism and/or Japanese culture will love this book.

Joan's book is a perfect review of Buddhist teachings, with a lovely balance of people-met-along-the-way,
symbols (explanations of), Buddhist legends, and honest (human) revelations of "the way it is" on pilgrimages (as
in life) with what, for want of a better phrase, I will call "creeping pilgrim's fatigue" and the desire for less discomfort
and more epiphanies.

Favorite metaphor so far: "Steam rose from our socks like yesterday's thought forms." (p.46)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bookReviewed in Japan 🇯🇵 on 9 September 2021

This book is the only book I could find about the 33 Kannon temples pilgrimage and I recommend it. It's not a guide book, nor a book about Buddhism, the author write about the trips she did to Japan to visit the temples, so one part is personnel, and she also gives some historical information about the temples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historically rich and author gifted with writing that brings us into contemporary Japan in a vulnerable way.Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 15 July 2018

This book has all the attributes of what I find most exciting. Stamm opens the path to understanding the fascinating Buddhist Pilgrimage Of Cannon while making the journey personal and vulnerable. I brought this book on a trip with three friends and after sharing my enthusiasm about it we spent several hours reading aloud to each other. We all felt stimulated and moved from this rich account.
