Guidebook to Japan's Kumano Kodo, a series of UNESCO-listed pilgrimage routes that crisscross the mountainous Kii peninsula, south of Osaka. Centred on three Shinto-Buddhist shrines known as the Kumano Sanzan, the ancient trails blend great hiking and exceptional natural beauty with a unique insight into Japan's rich history, culture and spirituality. The guide covers the 64km Nakahechi and 63km Kohechi trails in full, as well as the Choishimichi route to Koyasan (20km), the Hongu loop (17km) and highlights of the Iseji trail. It can be used to plan and undertake an independent trek or to enrich an organised tour. Clear route description and mapping is accompanied by comprehensive details of accommodation and facilities, as well as notes on local points of interest and inspirational colour photography. You'll find a wealth of practical information to help plan your trip, covering transport, climate, accommodation, budgeting, equipment and safety, as well as fascinating background information on history, religion and wildlife. There is also a Japanese glossary and helpful advice on Japanese customs and etiquette. The Kumano Kodo offers a different view of Japan: far removed from the modern cities, this is a world of forested slopes, hidden valleys, waterfalls, traditional villages, moss-covered stone deities and tranquil oji shrines. There are opportunities to experience hot-spring bathing and to sample local cuisine as you follow in the footsteps of emperors, samurai, priests and ascetics traversing traditional flagstone paths and forest trails. In 1998 the Kumano Kodo was twinned with the Camino de Santiago and walkers who complete both can register as 'dual pilgrims'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Kumano Kodo Guide Available!Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 15 September 2022

I have used this book extensively for planning a trip to hike the Kumano Kodo in Japan. This guide is incredibly informational and helpful. I love that it includes information on accommodations along the trail including exact descriptions about where they are located and what to expect. The maps are clear and coded extremely well. The layout and order of the book makes sense - I don't waste time not being able to find the exact passage I'm looking for.

We will be going on our trek in 2 months and this guide was the best planning tool I could have found. It has the answer to every question that I have wondered about so far, and I'm sure it's going to be absolutely pivotal when we arrive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very, very useful information in this comprehensive guide.Reviewed in Canada 🇨🇦 on 8 November 2019

This book helped us do our hike independently. The tourism office provides great information, but it is really hard to figure out from Canada. I read about others doing the hike on their own. We preferred this approach because it allowed us freedom to adjust our plan given weather and other factors. Beautiful experience, by the way, Kumano Kodo is a trip of a lifetime : )

I used this book as a guide to hiking the Nakahechi route in February 2020. It's just small enough to carry with. Although I live close by Kumano Kodo I was able to learn quite a lot from this book, especially about the Jizos lining the trail. Some Japanese hikers I met were impressed with the maps inside it. I'd recommend this guide for anyone interested in Kumano Kodo but must also stress the area is susceptible to rapid changes in weather/temperature. Part of the trail was damaged when I visited (and a portion of it closed down for quite some time) so always check the official Kumano Kodo website before and during your trip. Happy trekking!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for a hiking the Kumano KodoReviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 19 August 2019

On a recent hiking trip to Japan, I hiked the Kohechi and the second half of the Nakahechi. This book had just come out and helped me immensely to prepare for the hike. The reason I subtract a star is that while I was on the trail, I mainly relied on the official brochures (for free) instead of this book, which proved to be sufficient. But it is great for background information and preparation from oversees nonetheless. Recommended!
