Mary Anne Bright
As complementary medicine has moved into the American mainstream, health-care practitioners are increasingly being asked for more natural health-care options that stress prevention and promote well-being. For nurses and other health-care providers, Bright (School of Nursing, U. of Massachusetts, Amherst) presents an overview of the history, philosophy, and uses of 16 common complementary and alternative medicine therapeutics.
They are organized into three categories:
- holistic healing modalities, such as imagery and massage;
- Western complementary healing practices, such as naturopathy and homeopathy; and
- Eastern healing systems, including Chinese medicine and Ayurveda.

This is probably one of the more interesting textbooks I've been assigned. The author cites a lot of material that is great for putting in papers and you get a good understand of the topic. Also, many of the chapters are relatively short so the reading doesn't get too terribly boring or drawn out.

I was assigned this book for a class of the University of Massachusetts but it has become a life guide. Truly helps explain different Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) methods and helped me focus on new avenues for treatment of my mental illness.

I have explored my community in order to find the CAM methods specified. It really helped condense the different modalities in accessible language and great examples!
