At last, the paperback edition of the monumental best-seller (almost half a million copies in print!) that has changed the way Americans think about sickness and health -- the companion volume to the landmark PBS series of the same name. In a remarkably short period of time, Bill Moyers's Healing And The Mind has become a touchstone, shaping the debate over alternative medical treatments and the role of the mind in illness and recovery in a way that few books have in recent memory. With almost half a million copies in print, it is already a classic -- the most widely read and influential book of its kind.

In a series of fascinating interviews with world-renowned experts and laypeople alike, Bill Moyers explores the new mind/body medicine.
Healing And The Mind
- shows how it is being practiced in the treatment of stress, chronic disease, and neonatal problems in several American hospitals;
- examines the chemical basis of emotions, and their potential for making us sick (and making us well);
- explores the fusion of traditional Chinese medicine with modern Western practices in contemporary China; and
- takes an up-close, personal look at alternative healing therapies, including a Massachusetts center that combines Eastern meditation and Western group therapy, and a California retreat for cancer patients who help each other even when a cure is impossible.
Combining the incisive yet personal interview approach that made A World Of Ideas a feast for the mind and the provocative interplay of text and art that made The Power Of Myth a feast for the imagination, Healing And The Mind is a landmark work.

The content of this book is a series of interviews with Moyers and top Professionals in the Medical field. Moyers asks very relevant questions from a skeptical position, the Medical Professional answer is informative as well as fascinating. You can see how the Medical Profession is beginning to change its line of thinking with regards to healing the complete aspect of the Patient, not just the symptoms of the illness or disease.
The human being is a complex mixture of emotions and statistics. In fact the Doctors are realizing they are also members of the human race. All this goes into the mix of a new era of caring being introduced today that benefits both the Doctor and the Patient.
Excellent reading.

I had the cassette set in the late 90s. I thought it was excellent and loaned it to someone. Well you know how that goes...couldn't remember who I loaned it to. Since I couldn't find an audio version I ordered the book. A friend saw my copy and wanted it as well so I gave it to her and ordered another for myself. It's an excellent read and I highly recommend it. In addition to a high recommendation I was very impressed by the quick service by the vendor and the used paperback was in excellent condition.

I found the cassette format difficult at best to enjoy due to the foreign language discussions throughout. I am sure that authenticity was the goal for Moyers, but I would rather have not had my time wasted on not understanding words and would have rather enjoyed the tapes entirely in English with editing done. Have you ever tried to drive and constantly push the fast forward button on the radio/cassette player? The book would have been better for me.

This might be as much an eye opener for the novice as it was for me, a qualified Tai Chi instructor. Highly recommend the read which does a great job of explaining the differences between Eastern and Western medicine and then examples of how beautiful they are when properly blended together!

Bill Moyers is thorough and communicates well for anyone to be able to explain his explorations. It is the quality that made him an impressive success for all these years. As a resident of east Texas near to his birth place in Marshall, I firmly believe that he is "the best" to ever come out of this state when it comes to intelligence and the ability to communicate knowledge.
