Abstract:
George Fox DeVol (1871-1917) and his wife, Mary Isabella French (1869-1920) were medical doctors and missionaries to China, notable for their work at the Friends Missions there. Isabella, having completed her medical degree from the Cleveland College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ohio Wesleyan University in 1897 with a summer of additional training in New York, first traveled to the Friends’ Mission at Nanking that same year. George completed his medical degree from Medical College in New York City in 1896, then worked in hospitals and in private practice until 1900, when he arrived at the Mission on January 9th. He and Isabella were married that same month, on January 17th, 1900, in Nanking. They pair worked both as doctors and as evangelists for many years, overseeing the construction of refuges, mission buildings, and hospitals. George died in 1917 from complications from carbuncles and overwork, after which Isabella continued work in the hospital for one year. Ill health compelled her to take her children, all born in China, to the United States. After returning, she lived for some years in Glens Falls, New York, in the home of her sister-in-law, Louisa DeVol Sweet, before dying in Marengo, Ohio, in the home of Elbert Benedict. During their years in China, the DeVol family and the Sweet family exchanged letters frequently. Surviving letters received by Louisa Sweet include those written by George, Isabella, and two of their children, Catherine and Charles, describing their daily activities and personal views of current events. Typed and handwritten letters, articles, periodicals, photographs, and textiles generated by or relating to the lives and work of the George Fox DeVol family in China and collected by the Harry and Louisa Sweet family.
