Malory Nye is an independent academic, consultant and writer, who has worked for many years in UK higher education (both public and private).
He has a particular interest in multiculturalism, diversity, and contemporary social issues. He has been the principal of an HE college in Scotland, and has taught and been affiliated with King's College London, University of Stirling, and the University of Aberdeen.
He is the author of several books, including 'Multiculturalism and Minority Religions in Britain', 'There shall be an independent Scotland', and 'Religion: the Basics'. He also edits the journal titled Culture and Religion.
He also produces two podcasts, 'Religion Bites' and 'Malory Nye: writer & academic', which can both be found in iTunes.

This book discusses "religion" as a form of culture and power. Talking about them is a way to understand religion, its effectiveness, and dealing with it.
The author sees religion as an act practiced by humans, and hence he speaks more precisely about "religiosity." He has the right to do so, as we only see what is practiced or explained by its followers.
The author then proceeded to study religion through its concepts (beliefs), books, rituals, and symbols, showing the extent of similarity in studying religions regardless of their type or name, which provides a knowledge base for dealing with acts of religiosity (religion) for the reader.
The book did not address issues such as the origins of religion, the tendency toward religiosity, or the correctness of religion. It presented interesting examples from contemporary religions.
I did not find anything in the chapter (gender) that deserved to be a separate chapter, and it could have been integrated as examples in the rest of the chapters. In the last chapter on the reality of religion and its future, I found a lot of padding that does not fall under the book’s treatment of (the foundations) as stated in the title.
The book is beautiful, organized, and useful in its field, and thanks to the Arab Network for Research and Publishing, which carefully selects its materials, writers, and translators.

The book is very important despite the poor translation in many places... It deals with issues of religion and its relationship to culture, society, history, philosophy, sociology and the role of the media in general... All these factors combine to produce what is called religion, especially religion in the post-colonial period.
Mallory Nye emphasizes that "a person's religion is his culture," which is what T.S. Eliot went for in his writings that were translated into Arabic and I read them... which means that religion is a human practice and interaction with it is related to the extent of the development of awareness and the movement of history in general.
His talk about secularization, the privatization of religion, the revival of religion, traditionalism and religious pluralism remains among the issues that the book deals with greatly.

It is true that it took me a long time to finish it and a lot of effort,
but of course I came out of it with a good result,
a foundational and very useful book, which deals with the concept of religion from the perspective of culture.
The author's approach: What we call (religion) is something that humans do, and thus the study of religion is primarily concerned with humans and their culture.
Religion is not considered something internal and separate from human life, for religion is what humans do, and it is also how they talk about what they do.
The study of religion is the study of culture, and religion is a fundamental aspect of culture.
A person's religious life is his cultural life, meaning that a person's religion - whether he is one of those who take religion strongly or one of those who look at religion with indifference or one of those in between - does not only stem from his culture, but rather religion is his culture.

The main premise of the book from which Mallory starts is to approach and study religions in their cultural context, that is, as part of culture; they are not fixed (static) givens that are studied in isolation from the culture of a society; studying Christianity in Egypt is different from studying it in Britain, studying Islam in Saudi Arabia is different from studying it in America, and so on. From this angle, the author approaches several topics related to religion. For example, studying religious texts from this perspective does not suffice with studying the text itself, but must include how to interact with it in every social and cultural context, and in a close and similar methodologies to present issues of gender, rituals, and belief. The book is good as an introduction to knowing how to study religions in academic fields, and to get a general idea of the most important topics that are discussed, and with the exception of a few places, Nye does not go into much detail and is satisfied with presenting and repeating some of his results throughout the book.

A good book that stands on the edge of defining the course of the universe around you and the relationship of many determinants to religion and sex, based on psychological approaches and reading in social studies.
It is nothing more than research that provides definitions and attempts to provide the first steps for unspecified solutions to eternal problems such as racism, extremism, religious fundamentalism, social oppression, etc.

A nice summary of the points of view in dealing with religion, but as a human activity.. that is, it can be titled "Religion as a Socio-Cultural Given" .. and it contains many useful references .. and it is fair to a large degree, but within its pre-determined framework, which is looking at religion as a human activity..

A valuable book that raises questions and terms that make the reader want to delve deeper into them and study each one separately.
The book discusses religion as part of culture and there is no separation between them, in addition to presenting the concepts of ethnicity and nationalism that greatly influence religion. Religion is not separate in itself from all the divisions and historical transformations that the world is going through.
He also pointed out how to read it from one place to another, whether in the West or the East, according to the rituals and beliefs of each of them, considering it a part of the life and culture of humans. Religion is what humans do.... He
also distinguished between popular culture and prevailing culture and the role of authority in controlling religion and imposing its own teachings on the cultural group. Religion does not represent a specific culture, but rather a product of a hybrid culture. Religion has a specific role in the process of oppression and exploitation, and it does so by covering up economic facts according to the approach of Marx and Max Weber, who encouraged the principle of asceticism for the rise of capitalism by preserving the economy according to religious ideology.
The most important feature of the book is that it presents several opinions, mentioning the source and the speaker, and I believe that there is a need to review some of them and then return to this book again.
It addresses the theory of the death of the author and the relationship between the reader and the translator, and the problems raised by translation that may cause a defect in the relationship between the reader and the author, creating a large gap between them when reading the text.
The chapter that I liked most in the book is the one on nationalism, centralization, and secularism, and the important information it contains.

A beautiful book with somewhat boring writing. It is a social anthropological research into how religion and its elements are formed. The chapters of the book are as follows:
Religion, main features
, culture,
authority
, gender
, reductive and non-reductive doctrine according to Hick and Eliade,
rituals,
text,
contemporary religions.
In each section, he details and analyzes the term and explains its connection to religion. How religion and culture are two sides of the same coin, such that the basis of many literary works, artistic works, and sciences was their origin in religion, for example: (Shakespeare's plays, the works of the early Arabs such as Hayy, Ibn Yaqzan).
And how theorists from Marx and the Marxists to Weber and Foucault saw the religious vision and how religion is an essential part of authority in human life.
And how gender, a loose term related to culture and appearance more than human biology, affected religion, as some religions have come to impose absolute dominance in favor of males over females, such that the father (God in the Trinity) is male, so man has no powers according to texts and customs in life.
What is the interpretation of the doctrine? Does every religion have to have a doctrine? What are the languages that carry this term and what do not? For example, the indigenous Australian and New Zealand tribes practiced customs, cultures, and rituals of magic, sorcery, and superstitions, and they believed in them. These are not doctrines, but superstitions.
The text, understanding the text, bearing it, and literary criticism affected religion, as well as the era of globalization, such that in order to understand religion, one must know its basics and understand the methods of reading the Holy Book and the basic texts of this religion.
Finally, he talked about the modern movement and its pagan origins, and how it tries to make the individual dispense with his basics for loose basics, and he believes that they enrich him, but they do not, and he analyzed its roots that go back to the Eastern philosophies of yoga, Hinduism, and shamanism.

nice primer to contemporary theoretical issues in religious studies (and the humanities and social sciences more generally). the book efficiently covers a lot of theoretical ground. i liked the stuff about gender, ritual/ritualization, and texts.
this book is probably best for people in college or interested to know what kinds of big conversations secular academics are having about religious practice.
to clear up some confusion in the reviews on goodreads: this book is better categorized as "methods in cultural studies" and not "theology 101" or "survey of world religions"
