This is a comprehensive introduction to the history of Western Philosophy from the Pre-Socratics to Twentieth Century thought.
In addition to all the key figures, the book covers figures whose contributions have so far been overlooked, such as Vico, Montesquieu, Durkheim and Weber.
Along with in-depth discussion of the philosophical movements, Skirbekk and Gilje also discuss the natural sciences, the establishment of the Humanities, Socialism and Fascism, Psychoanalysis, and the rise of the social sciences.
History of Western Thought is an ideal introduction to philosophy and the sociological and scientific structures that have shaped modern day philosophy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to learn the philosophy historyReviewed in the United States on June 20, 2021

Bought this for my wife who is really interested in philosophy these days. And she said this is a great book and easy to understand because it is aimed at undergraduate students. She said comparing with the other books for philosophy history, she loves this one best.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Kindle version riddled with formatting and spelling errorsReviewed in Germany on September 3, 2016

I cannot recommend this book's Kindle version, as it appears to have had little to no proofreading. I understand that these things may often be created via OCR (optical character recognition), but there should at least be some editing in order to justify the rather steep price (24 Euros at the time of this review). As it stands, the product is at times illegible and filled with sentences like "Heel's theory of master and slave", "Hegel led a middle-class Ye first as a family tutor", "Of interest J r his political theory", "Kant simply took J r granted", "thing-in-itse f", which certainly does not aid in the comprehension of the already difficult material presented.

This was read on the classic, unmodified Kindle device, so I highly doubt that it's an issue on my side. I've also reproduced the same errors on multiple devices (including the Kindle cloud reader.
