1960년대부터 1989년까지는 함석헌이 서구 퀘이커들과 직간접적 영향을 주고받던 시대였고, 동시에 그가 가장 직접적이고 왕성하게 남한의 정치사회적 민주화와 씨알의 인권향상을 위해 일하던 시기였다. 이 때 그는 군사정권에 온몸으로 저항하는 한편, 사상적으로는 열렬히 퀘이커주의에 심취하게 되었고, 급기야 월간지〈씨알의 소리〉를 창간하게 된다. 무엇이 1950년대 후반 ‘스캔들’ 등으로 처절한 낙심에 빠진 ‘죄인’ 함석헌을 ‘지칠 줄 모르는 자유의 투사'로 변모시켰을까? 함석헌의 정치적 관여, 혹은 좀더 정확하게 표현해서, 사회정의를 추구하기 위해 직접적으로 남한의 현실문제에 참가하게 된 경위의 배후에는 퀘이커주의가 있다.

1960년대부터 1989년까지는 함석헌이 서구 퀘이커들과 직간접적 영향을 주고받던 시대였고, 동시에 그가 가장 직접적이고 왕성하게 남한의 정치사회적 민주화와 씨알의 인권향상을 위해 일하던 시기였다. 이 때 그는 군사정권에 온몸으로 저항하는 한편, 사상적으로는 열렬히 퀘이커주의에 심취하게 되었고, 급기야 월간지〈씨알의 소리〉를 창간하게 된다. 무엇이 1950년대 후반 ‘스캔들’ 등으로 처절한 낙심에 빠진 ‘죄인’ 함석헌을 ‘지칠 줄 모르는 자유의 투사'로 변모시켰을까? 함석헌의 정치적 관여, 혹은 좀더 정확하게 표현해서, 사회정의를 추구하기 위해 직접적으로 남한의 현실문제에 참가하게 된 경위의 배후에는 퀘이커주의가 있다.
퀘이커주의의 선도자였던 조지 폭스는 모든 사람을 평등하게 존중하였으며 인간평등의 중요성을 역설했다. 그는 사회의 약자를 찾아보고 돌보는 것이 참된 종교라고 전했다. 함석헌이 ‘항시 추구하는 사람’이었음에도 불구하고 그 삶을 퀘이커교도로 마감한 것을 고려하면서 퀘이커주의가 함석헌에게 미친 영향을 연구평가했다.
이 글에서는 첫째 사상사적 입장에서 서구 퀘이커주의를 살펴보았다. 특별히 퀘이커주의가 서구에서 소수 기독교 종파임에도 불구하고, 영국과 미국 역사에 미친 주요 공헌과 영향을 분석했다. 둘째, 이러한 퀘이커주의의 ‘조직기피증’ 성향에 함석헌이 왜 관심을 갖게 되었고 그의 후반기 삶과 사상에 어떤 밀접한 사상적실제적 영향을 미치게 되었는지를 들여다보았다. 그럼으로써, 함석헌에게 한국인으로서 퀘이커교도가 된다는 것이 어떤 의미를 갖고 있으며 한국기독교사에서 퀘이커 함석헌이 차지하는 위치는 어디에 있는가를 평가했다.
Ham Sok Hon had a close connection with the Western Quakers from 1960 until he died in 1989. During this period he was actively engaged in the democratization movement of South Korea, vigorously protesting against the military dictatorship. At the height of the military dictatorship, 1970, Ham also established a monthly magazine, Voice of the People. What turned Ham, the downhearted man of the end of 1950s who was involved in a scandal, into a relentless freedom fighter? From at least the 1960s onward, Quakerism was always behind Ham whenever he was active in the democratization movement. George Fox, early leader of the Quaker movement, also emphasized the equality of men and women, and respect for each individual, not only under the law but also before God. Fox said that religion means looking after the social underdog and standing by him. Ham, always a man of doing rather than a man of being, ended his life as a Quaker. I will therefore examine and evaluate the reciprocal relationship between Ham and Quakerism. In this paper, firstly I will look into the philosophical aspect of Quakerism as seen through English and American history. In particular, I will closely examine the influence and contribution of Quakerism to English and American history. Secondly, I will analyze how and why Ham became interested in Quakerism, and how his thinking was influenced by Quakerism. By doing so, I will look into what it meant to be a Quaker to Ham as a Korean. In addition, I will also examine what kind of role Ham fulfilled as a Quaker in relation to Korean Christianity.
