본 논문은 신학함의 한 방법을 규정하는 “통전(統全 holistic)” 개념의 다양한 용례에 따른 의미를 파악하여 통전의 기제(機制 mechanism)를 밝힘으로써 통전적 신학의 외연 확장에 공헌하고자 한다.
신학과 교회에서 ‘통전’이 언제부터 사용되었는지는 정확하지 않으나 ‘삼위일 체’처럼 특정 의미를 전달할 목적으로 구성한 개념이라 볼 수 있다. 문제는 그 의미가 분명치 않은 것이다. 통합, 종합 등의 의미로 혼용되고 있다. 그러므로 관건은 무엇을 말하려고 ‘통전’을 만들어 사용했는지를 이해하는 것이다. 이를 위해 종합 혹은 통합의 의미를 추구하는 철학의 흐름을 개괄적으로 살펴볼 필요가 있다.
본 논문은 먼저 통전 개념을 이해하는 두 가지 시도에 대한 비판적 성찰을 전제한다. 신학 방법론으로서 구속력 있는 의미를 얻기 위해 ‘통전’의 성경적 용례를 아전인수적으로 해석하여 무리하게 사용하는 것과 또 “통전적 신학”을 처음으로 주장한 이종성의 용례에서 통전의 전형적인 의미를 확정하고 상술하려는 것이다.
이런 시도로 통전 개념의 의미가 어느 정도 조명되는 건 사실이나 전형적인 의미로 받아들이기에는 설득력이 부족하다. 무엇보다 이미 이종성 이전에도 사용된 적이 있고 또 오늘날까지도 개념을 새롭게 이해하려는 시도가 이어지고 있기 때문이 다. 개념의 의미를 자의적으로 확정하기 전에 다양한 용례들에 대한 비판적인 고찰이 선행해야 한다.
본 논문을 통해 필자는 먼저 철학과 신학에서 사용된 ‘통합’과 ‘종합’의 의미의 한계를 지적하고 신학적 방법론으로 적합하다고 여겨지는 통전이 구체적으로 어떻게 일어나는지 밝히고자 한다. 통전의 기제를 밝히지 않으면서 통전을 신학적 방법론으로 삼는 건 만족스럽지 못하다고 생각하기 때문이다.
특히 통전의 구체적 작용 방식을 밝히기 위해 한의학자로서 동서양 융합의학에 대한 공로로 대한민국 신지식인으로 선정되었고 또 의학적 신학(medical theology)의 구성에 전념하면서 통전 이해에서 주목할 만한 독특한 관점을 제시하고 있는 최서형의 견해를 소개할 것이다.
This thesis aims to identify various meaning of “TongJun” that prescribes a theological methodology and to reveal the mechanism of it to expand the extension of the holistic theology.
It is not clear since when “TongJun” was used in theology and churches, but it can be seen as a concept composed for the purpose of conveying a specific meaning, such as ‘trinity’. The problem is that the meaning of it is unclear and is used in the sense of ‘integral’ or ‘comprehensive’. The key is to understand what is meant to be spoken by ‘TongJun’. Therefore, it is necessary to take a glance at some philosophical tendencies that prefer the meaning of ‘integral’ or ‘comprehensive’.
This thesis lies on the critical reflection of two cases trying to understand the notion of wholism. One is compromising the biblical usage of ‘wholism’ to obtain senseful meaning as a theological methodology, and the other one is settling and describing the typical meaning of wholism based on the example of Rhee Jong Sung who claimed ‘holistic theology’ for the first time. It is true that they have brought the notion of wholism into light, but understanding it in the typical way is not convincing enough. This is because, most of all, it was already used even before Rhee Jong Sung and there are still ongoing attempts to figure out new ways to understand it. Before confirming the meaning of a notion arbitrarily, a critical consideration of various examples needs to be preceded.
In this thesis, the author reveals the limit of the meaning of ‘integral’ and ‘comprehensive’ used in philosophy and theology, and how TongJun takes place which is adequate to be a theological methodology. This is because the mechanism of TongIun needs to be clear in order to use it as a theological methodology or to examine whether it is theologically proper or not.
Especially, Choi Seo Hyeong will be introduced, who has been nominated as a New Korean Intellectual for his contribution to East-West Convergence Medicine and devoted to the construction of medical theology, presenting a unique perspective that is remarkable for holistic theology.
