Amit Goswami ( born November 4, 1936 ) is an Indian-American physicist. He was a professor at the Institute of Theoretical Science at the University of Oregon . He has dealt with the connection between quantum physics and consciousness in numerous scientific works and strives to synthesize the “new physics” with the spirituality and traditions of Indian philosophy . He is the author of two standard works on the history of physics ( The Physicists' View of Nature ), one of which is on quantum mechanics . One of his best-known works is The Self-Aware Universe , published in 1993, in which he puts forward the hypothesis that the paradoxes of modern science can be solved if one assumes that the universe is not made of matter , but consists of consciousness. Goswami also appeared in the film What the Bleep do we (k)now!? on. In collaboration with his wife Maggie Goswami, the book The Cosmic Dancers: Exploring the Physics of Science Fiction was written . They live together in Eugene , Oregon (USA).

Born in India, Amit Goswami received his doctorate in physics from the University of Calcutta in 1964 . From there he started his career in the United States and was a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Oregon from 1968 to 1997 . From 1998 to 2000 he was a lecturer at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and taught regularly at the Holmes Institute, the Philosophical Research University in Los Angeles, Pacifica in Santa Barbara, California and UNIPAZ in Portugal. [1]

He was particularly interested in the significance of quantum physics for our current worldview. From the perspective of idealistic monism , such as that found in Indian Vedanta , many questions raised by quantum physics appear to be solved. His thinking thus combines science and spirituality, referred to by Goswami as quantum spirituality . [2] From this perspective, he also tried to reinterpret other aspects of modern intellectual life: from the art of healing to the theory of quantum evolution, even the proposal of a quantum economics that would replace capitalism after the Coined by Adam Smith transferred into a new paradigm . All of this gave rise to the quantum activism movement he founded in 2009 , which is widespread primarily in North and South America, but also in southern and eastern Europe and in India. In 2018, together with his colleagues, he founded Quantum Activism Vishwalayam [3] , a center for transformative education in India based on the principles of quantum physics and the primacy of consciousness. The institute comes under the University of Technology of Jaipur . [4]

In his main work The Conscious Universe (1993), Amit Goswami initially deals with Descartes' dualistic worldview, which, in his separation of subjective and objective perception in science, led to the deterministic view of materialistic realism, which had serious consequences for our modern worldview . Amit Goswami writes:

“The negative influence of materialistic realism on the quality of life of modern people is enormous. Materialist realism confronts us with a universe devoid of spiritual meaning: mechanical, empty and lonely.”

Goswami counters this one-sided and, from his point of view, untenable worldview with an idealistic monism in which consciousness plays a fundamental role. From a generally understandable and clear presentation of quantum physics, Goswami draws the conclusion in his book that everything consists of consciousness and not of matter in the classical sense. According to Goswami, this view of monistic idealism allows quantum physics to be interpreted free of paradoxes. [5] On this basis, in the second part of the book, Goswami tries to connect the spiritual traditions of humanity, especially the Indian tradition, with the perspective of quantum physics. Goswami finds the typically Indian reflection of the self (Maya - illusion, Atman - self or not-self, Buddhi - awakening) in the structure of consciousness.

The hypothesis of the conscious universe put forward by Amit Goswami is based on a transfer of the subatomic processes of quantum mechanics to the macrocosmic laws of our world. This connection is disputed by many scientists. Due to decoherence alone , quantum physical effects cannot simply be transferred to our reality. That is why many scientists view ideas such as quantum healing, the quantum physical explanation of paranormal phenomena such as clairvoyance or telepathy as unscientific border crossings into the realm of New Age or esotericism . Goswami's thoughts were also dubbed Quantum Quakery by the skeptics Michael Shermer and Victor J. Stenger [6] . However, this is contradicted by completely new perspectives, such as those from the field of brain research, which attribute the emergence of consciousness to quantum mechanical states in the brain or the entanglement of biological systems in microbiology, which could underlie the secret of shape formation and evolution. [7] The conceptual proximity of the paradoxes in quantum physics and the contradictory language of some spiritual masters have also motivated many other thinkers to bring spirituality and quantum physics together. The special connection with the Indian thinking of the philosophy of Vedanta initially remains a mystery to Western skeptics - but for Goswami, who comes from the Indian cultural area, this is obvious.
