이 의미의 ‘잉여‘를 설명하기 위해서 오토가 택한 단어가 바로 **누멘적인 numinous이라는 용어이다. (‘힘차게 신들린 초인간적인 에너지와 힘‘을 뜻하는 라틴어 누멘 numen에서 나온 말이다)
누멘적인 것은 **매혹적이면서도 또한 공포를 자아내는 것으로, 만질 수 없고 볼 수도 없지만 힘있는 실재를 말한다. 누멘적인 것이란 곧 **생동감 넘치는 종교의 가장 큰 특징이 되는 **비이성적, 비합리적 요소를 가리키는 것이다.
슐라이어마허는 칸트의 공식에 대한 대안으로서 종교를 **이성 외적 기능에 해당한다고 주장했다. 오토는 종교가 감정과 관계된다는 것을 인정했지만, **감정이란 종교의 진정한 근원에 대한 친근한 **유비 이상은 될 수 없다고 생각했다.
더욱 정확히 말해서, ‘감정‘ -혹은 ‘절대의존의 감정‘마저도 -은 종교적 조건에 대한 하나의 응답일 뿐이지 종교적 조건 그 자체는 아니다. 마찬가지로, **감정은 종교를 위한 계끼가 아니라 종교에 의해 **유발되는 것에 불과하다.
