2년 전 남편과 사별한 60대 여성 '낸시(엠마 톰슨)'. 교직에서 퇴직하고 아이들마저 성인이 되어 자신을 떠나 홀로 남게 되자 그녀는 처음이지 마지막으로 인생의 숙원이었던 버킷리스트를 실천에 옮기기로 결심한다. 단 한 번도 섹스에 만족해 본 적이 없으니 남편이 아닌 다른 남성과 성관계를 갖기로 한 것. 그런 그녀의 앞에 젊고 매력적이며 자신의 일에 당당하고 자신감 넘치는 '리오 그랜드(다릴 맥코맥)'가 나타난다. 마침내 버킷리스트가 현실이 되려는 찰나에, 긴장해서인지는 몰라도 낸시는 리오에게 계속해서 질문을 던지고 리오도 유려하게 답하며 그 대화를 이어나간다. 그리고 대화가 깊어지면 깊어질수록 두 남녀는 전혀 예상치 못한 인생의 방향성을 둘러싼 고민에 직면한다.
11일 개봉한 영화 <굿 럭 투 유, 리오 그랜드>는 여러모로 놀라운 영화다. 수많은 영화팬들에게 익숙한 대배우 엠마 톰슨이 처음 노출 연기에 도전한 작품이자, 성매매자들의 이야기를 양지에서 다루는 영화이기도 하다. 성을 사는 이가 중년 여성이고 파는 이가 청년 남성이라서 거듭 예상을 빗겨나간다. 여기까지만 보면 그 어떤 작품보다도 선정적이고 논란으로 가득한 영화일 것 같다는 느낌을 받을 수 있다. 그러나 첫인상만으로 평가받기에는 <굿 럭 투 유, 리오 그랜드>를 관통하는 주제의 가치가 눈에 밟힌다. 이 작품은 단순히 성매수자와 성매매자가 네 차례에 걸쳐 만나는 이야기가 아니라, 예상 밖의 사람을 만나 수십 년간 자신을 감싸고 있던 금기라는 단단한 알을 깨고 나오는 부화의 영화이기 때문이다.
영화의 목적이 단지 성적인 만남을 중계하는 것이 아니라는 사실은 낸시와 리오의 첫 만남에서부터 두드러진다. 카메라가 리오 그랜드의 서비스를 이용하는 낸시가 아니라, 서비스의 존재 자체에 반응하는 그녀의 모습에 주목하기 때문이다. 남편과 사별한 그녀는 평생 사회의 규칙을 충실히 따른 인물이다. 은퇴한 60대 종교 교사였던 그녀는 대학원에 다니는 아들과 스페인에서 예술을 하는 딸을 하나씩 두고 있고, 오랜 기간 동안 성공적으로 결혼 생활을 유지했으며, 자신의 오랜 커리어도 아름답게 마무리했다. 그런 그녀는 리오의 서비스를 예약하면서 두 개의 서로 다른, 그러면서도 하나로 연결되어 있는 반응을 보인다.
낸시는 우선 섹스에 대해서 대화를 나눈다. 그녀는 섹스를 불편하게 생각한다는 점을 담대하고 솔직히 드러낸다. 그간 자신의 느낌이나 감정 대신 남편의 쾌감만을 우선시했던 그녀는 경험한 상대방의 수나 다양한 체위에 대해 물어본다. 리오의 청산유수 같은 대답을 들으면서 그녀는 완벽해 보이던 자신의 삶이 사실은 완벽하지 않았다는 사실을 깨닫는다. 그녀는 리오보다 오랜 기간을 살았지만 미처 알지 못했던 것들, 그래서 공허한 것들이 많다는 현실을 알게 된다. 만약 그녀에게 도움이 되지 않는 상태를 그대로 두었다면 그녀를 감싸고 있던 알과 껍질들은 더 강해졌을지 모른다. 그렇지만 리오 그랜드를 만나면서 낸시는 육체적으로나 정신적으로나 새롭게 눈을 뜬다. 그래서 그간 억압된 삶을 살던 그녀는 리오와의 두 번째 만남에서 크게 변하기로 결심하고, 그를 통해 새로운 섹스에 도전한다.
용기와 결함

하지만 그렇기에 그녀는 리오를 궁금해한다. 낸시는 수십 년간 자신의 삶을 구성한 원칙과 신념으로 설명할 수 없는 리오의 삶을 이해하지 못하고, 그래서 더 알고 싶어 한다. 그렇기에 리오를 대하는 그녀의 태도에서는 용기와 결함이 동시에 느껴지고, 깨달음만큼이나 깊은 고정관념과 편견도 함께 드러난다. 낸시는 리오가 숨기려 했던 사적인 정보를 캐내고, 호텔방 밖에서도 만날 수 있는 관계가 되었다고 착각하며, 당당하게 직업을 밝히며 어머니와의 관계를 회복해 보라고 말한다. 정작 그녀가 모범적인 삶을 사는 아들을 지루해하고 정반대로 열정적으로 자유롭게 사는 딸을 골치 아파하는 점을 생각해보면 그녀의 조언은 리오에게 모순적이다.
이는 모든 갈등이 끝난 뒤, 호텔방이 아닌 호텔 커피숍에서 리오를 만난 다음에야 낸시가 난생처음 오르가슴을 경험할 수 있는 이유다. 특히 리오와의 섹스가 아닌 스스로, 자신의 힘으로 오르가슴에 도달한다는 점이 인상적이다. 이는 마치 그녀가 섹스로 상징되는 스스로를 향한 억압에서 벗어났을 뿐만 아니라 그녀가 타인에게 지닌 고정관념과 편견마저도 떨칠 수 있게 되었다는 것을, 온전히 자기 자신으로 한 단계 성장했음을 단적으로 보여주는 듯하기 때문이다. 그래서 이 영화는 단지 섹스와 성매매를 다루는 영화가 아니다. 그것들은 그저 트리거에 불과할 뿐, 성을 비롯한 다양한 금기에 스스로를 가두고 있던 개인들이 비로소 금기를 깨고 자유로워지는 순간을 영화는 진정으로 그려내고 싶어 하는 듯 보인다. 그렇기에 리오에게 이별을 고한 낸시는 거울 앞에서 자신의 벌거벗은 몸을 바라볼 수 있다. 단순히 섹스라는 금기에 갇혀 있지 않고, 60여 년간 살아온 자신의 삶과 자기 자신마저 되돌아보는 것이다.
낸시의 섹스 파트너인 리오 그랜드도 다르지 않다. 그는 사실 상당히 신선한 캐릭터다. 열의를 다해 감정적으로 건강한 쾌락을 주고자 하는 파트너는 스크린에서 쉽게 만나는 인물은 아니기 때문이다. 실제로 그는 건강한 성관계를 가져본 적이 없는 낸시에게 진정한 섹스의 의미를 알려준다. 그는 섹스, 접촉, 쾌락의 관점을 모든 소통으로 확대한다. 섹스는 언제나 대화의 일부이며 친밀감과 교감을 향한 갈망이 필수적이라는 사실을 되짚어 준다. 비록 그의 직업은 윤리적으로 논쟁의 여지가 있지만 섹스를 바라보는 리오의 시각만큼은 교과서적으로 건강하고 개방적이다. 그 덕분에 수치심을 느껴야 하고 통제해야 하고 몸을 가꿔야 한다는 규칙 하에서 살던 낸시는 자신의 신체를 대하는 태도가 크게 바뀐다. 사실 리오는 가족들에게 석유 회사에 다니면서 바다 밑바닥에 구멍을 뚫어 석유 탐사를 하고 있다고 말해놨는데, 이는 리오의 직업과 일맥상통하며 꽤나 섹슈얼한 알레고리처럼 보이기도 한다.
흥미로운 것은 그런 그조차도 낸시와의 만남 이후 자신을 억누르고 있던 또 다른 억압과 금기로부터 자유로워진다는 점이다. 세대가 다르면 섹스와 쾌락에 관한 이해도 다른데, 영화는 이를 놓치지 않는다. 실제로 낸시와의 네 차례에 걸친 만남과 대화, 그리고 갈등은 그가 자신의 정체성을 찾는 분기점이 된다. 고등학생 시절 어머니에게 문란한 모습을 보인 후 가족과 의절하며 성적인 수치심을 겪은 바 있는 리오. 이처럼 어머니와 연관된 깊은 상처는 자기 일을 잘할 수 있는 힘이 되기도 한다. 자신의 정체성과 쾌락을 개방적으로 탐색하는 인물이기 때문이다.
그래서 리오에게 낸시와의 갈등과 말다툼은 또 다른 기회가 된다. 그는 본래 자신의 과거사를 고객에게 절대 밝히지 않는다. 다름 사람과의 다양한 육체관계와 소통을 즐기면서도 그 선을 넘는 것을 원치는 않는다. 하지만 낸시를 만난 그는 때로는 규칙을 어기며 인간적 교류를 하고, 그 과정에서 그가 낸시에게 알려주었듯이 자기 자신도 스스로를 온전히 긍정할 수 있는 기회를 잡는다.
자신의 몸과 마음을 깨닫다
이처럼 두 남녀가 진정한 자신의 몸과 마음을 깨달아가는 이야기는 그 이야기가 호텔 방이라는 한 공간에서 진행되기에 더욱 흥미롭다. 기본적으로 질감이 느껴지는 푸른 카페트와 소파, 베개처럼 관능성이 느껴지는 가구들의 배치가 눈길을 끈다. 또 그 방 안에서도 나뉘어 있는 공간들의 기능도 흥미롭다. 호텔 방 안의 공간은 크게 소파, 침대, 거울, 화장실로 나눌 수 있다. 이때 소파에서는 낸시와 리오가 서로의 이야기를 솔직하게 털어놓는다. 침대에서는 모험에 나선 낸시의 과감한 도전이 돋보이는 공간이다. 한편 화장실은 잠시 그들이 호텔 밖 현실을 만나는 공간이자 순간이다. 딸에게 걸려 온 전화를 낸시가 화장실에 받는 사이에 어떻게 하면 더 섹시해 보일까 하고 고민하는 리오의 짧은 고뇌를 담아낸 장면이 대표적이다. 마지막으로 거울에는 자신의 몸을 보면서 마인드의 변화를 새삼 깨닫는 낸시의 사색과 해방의 쾌감이 담겨 있다.
하지만 눈길은 이내 방의 한쪽 면을 모두 차지하는 창문으로 향한다. 두 사람의 만남이 같은 공간에서 반복되더라도, 넓디넓은 창문에 담기는 조명과 풍경의 변화는 마치 외부 세계의 이야기들을 실내 공간 안으로 미묘하게 끌어들이는 듯 느껴지기 때문이다. 실제로 첫 만남에서는 맑기 그지없었던 창문 속 날씨는 선을 넘은 낸시와 개인사에 예민하게 반응하는 리오가 다툼을 벌일 때 비로 가득하다. 이처럼 한 공간을 다양하게 활용하는 것은 마치 낸시와 리오의 몸에 대한 비유 같기도 하다. 그들이 어떤 감정과 생각을 투사하느냐에 따라 호텔방은 대화의 공간이었다가 도전하는 공간이고, 갈등하고 싸우는 장소였다가 쾌감으로 가득한 공간이 되기도 한다. 그들의 몸도 그들이 어떻게 받아들이느냐에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 이처럼 공간적 배경을 활용한 스토리텔링을 보면 <굿 럭 투 유, 리오 그랜드>는 참으로 스마트한 영화라고 생각을 떨칠 수 없다.
성매매를 둘러싼 논쟁

물론 <굿 럭 투 유, 리오 그랜드>는 그 자체로 논란일 작품이다. 소재이자 발단인 성매매를 둘러싼 논쟁의 연장선에서 결코 벗어날 수 없는 작품임에 분명하다. 자본주의 사회에서는 모든 것들을 둘러싸고 구매자가 판매자의 우위에 설 수 있다. 그러나 성은 이야기가 조금 다를 수 있다. 여성의 성을 구매하는 남성과 달리 남성의 성을 구매하는 여성은 자신이 구매자이지만 판매자인 남성에게 우위를 내줄 수 있기 때문이다. 이처럼 자본과 젠더 권력의 우열을 둘러싼 다양한 논의는 성매매에 대한 전통적인 문제의식의 발로라고 할 수도 있다.
한편으로는 신선하다. 사실 여성의 신체는 남성의 신체보다 자주 스크린에 전시되고 소비된다. 그런데 <굿 럭 투 유, 리오 그랜드>는 남성의 성과 신체를 판매 대상으로 삼으면서 그 문화적 서열을 역전시킨다.
덕분에 성매매를 둘러싼 옹호와 부정 사이에서 성매매를 매개로 만난 두 남녀의 개인적인 이야기를 살펴볼 수 있고, 공감할 수 있는 틈이 생겨난다. 물론 시작점이 성매매이기에 그 관계 자체가 호불호가 갈릴 여지가 있는 것은 여전할 수도 있다.
그러나 호불호를 이유로 눈길을 안 주기에는 금기 내지는 성역이라 여겨지는 소재를 이용해 보편적인 삶의 자세와 태도에 대한 이야기를 펼쳐내는 도전적인 스토리텔링의 맛이 찰진 것도 사실이다. 소피 하이드 감독이 데뷔작 < 52번의 화요일 >로 제30회 선댄스영화제 감독상과 제64회 베를린 국제영화제 수정곰상을 받은 이유가 새삼 느껴지기도 한다.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is a 2022 British sex comedy-drama film directed by Sophie Hyde and written by Katy Brand. The film stars Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack.
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival on 22 January 2022, and was released on 17 June 2022, theatrically in the United Kingdom by Lionsgate, and digitally in the United States by Searchlight Pictures as a Hulu original film.
Plot[edit]
In a hotel room, Nancy Stokes welcomes a young sex worker named Leo Grande. Nancy is anxious, having booked him online in a rare moment of self-indulgence within a largely repressed life. Nancy explains that her husband, who died two years ago, was the only sexual partner she ever had, and their sex life was extremely unfulfilling. Her husband never allowed her to perform oral sex on him or performed it on her, declaring the act to be demeaning to him. Nancy has never experienced an orgasm in her life, only faking them for her husband during the passionless missionary sex they never deviated from. Nancy is also inscure about her physical appearance and age, which Leo has no qualms about and encourages her to embrace.
Nancy talks with Leo so she can be comfortable enough to be physically intimate. She shares details about her adult children, whom she feels disappointed by, and her previous work as a religious education teacher. Leo reciprocates with some details about his life, including that his mother believes him to be an oil rig worker. Despite hiding his actual job from his family, Leo expresses no shame or regret about sex work, considering it a necessary service, and assuaging Nancy's embarrassment over hiring him.
Nancy recounts the most sensual experience she ever had was as a teenager on a family holiday in Greece; a hotel worker took an interest in her, and while they were alone in the hotel garden, he began kissing and fingering her before being interrupted and running away. Seeing Nancy aroused and relaxed by her own story, Leo fingers and kisses her.
A week later, Nancy meets Leo in the same room for a second session, having been satisfied, despite not achieving an orgasm. Nancy presents Leo with a bucket list of sexual activities she wishes to experience for the first time, beginning with fellatio. However, Nancy is again anxious about being intimate with Leo. Her nerves are worsened by phone calls from her daughter, who has overly relied on Nancy since her father's death. Leo relaxes Nancy through dancing and a massage. When Leo advises her to not obsess over finishing her entire list of sex acts in one night, Nancy talks about sacrificing her youth and potential adventures for her family. Leo reveals he has a younger brother in the military, from whom he is estranged.
Leo suggests Nancy book more sessions to reduce the pressure she is placing on herself to perform. This offends Nancy, who accuses him of trying to make more money off her. She asks Leo why he does sex work, and he explains he obtains genuine pleasure from seeing his clients be pleasured, whoever they are and whatever their preferences may be. Nancy sees Leo becoming aroused as he describes his work, which in turn arouses her, and she finally performs fellatio on him.
Nancy books Leo for a third session in the same room. This time he performs oral sex on her, the second item on her list, which she enjoys, but still does not bring her to orgasm. Nancy attempts to pry Leo for more details about his life, which he deflects, saying that he is there to provide a fantasy and nothing more. Nancy admits to cyberstalking Leo and uncovering his real name: Connor. Nancy asks if they can be friends outside of these sessions, encourages Leo to tell his family about his work, and even offers to speak to his mother on his behalf.
Upset at Nancy's invasion of his privacy, Leo gets dressed and tells Nancy to never book him again, threatening to expose her as a client if she attempts to contact his family or reveal his personal details to anyone else. Shortly after storming out, Leo returns to retrieve a cell phone he left in the room. Before finding his phone and leaving, Leo admits his mother disowned him when he was 15 years old, out of disgust for who he was, and tells people he is dead.
Nancy books Leo for a fourth session but arranges to meet him in the hotel's cafe so she can apologise to him and say goodbye. She takes responsibility for her behaviour and admits her real name is Susan Robinson. She thanks Leo for making her feel confident in herself and sexually awakened. She has recommended Leo to several women within her circle, whom she believes desperately need his services as much as she had. In turn, Leo reveals the reason his mother disowned him is because she caught him and several friends having group sex when he was a teenager. His mother will still not acknowledge his existence, even walking past him when they recently saw each other in public. However, Leo revealed his job to his brother, and they are beginning to talk again.
A waitress named Becky turns out to be one of Nancy's former students, and interrupts them to tell a story about Nancy chastising her and her friends for wearing short skirts to school, calling them "sluts". Nancy apologises for her past judgmental behaviour, and confesses her relationship to Leo, recommending his services to Becky as well. Nancy invites Leo for a final session in their hotel room upstairs, where they passionately engage in all of the remaining sex acts on Nancy's list. Despite going through all of them, Nancy is still yet to orgasm. While Leo looks for a sex toy he brought to help, Nancy watches him walk around naked and begins to masturbate, giving herself her first orgasm. When Leo leaves the morning after, Nancy thanks him and tells him that this will be their final session, as she doesn't need him anymore. Alone in the hotel room, Nancy admires her own naked body.

Development and casting[edit]
In October 2020, it was announced that Emma Thompson would star in a film directed by Sophie Hyde from a screenplay by Katy Brand.[2] The film is a joint project between Genesius Pictures and Cornerstone Films, with Debbie Gray and Adrian Politowski producing.[2]
Daryl McCormack joined the cast in February 2021.[3]
Hyde said that she enjoyed working with Thompson, and the two of them worked collaboratively, with the resulting film a co-creation by both of them. "We discussed a lot, listened to each other’s stories and ideas about the material."[4]
Filming[edit]
Principal photography began on 8 March 2021 and concluded on 20 April 2021. Filming locations included London and Norwich.[5][6]
Emma Thompson's naked scene in this film was "probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do," she said.[7]
Daryl McCormack and Emma Thompson did not require an intimacy coordinator to orchestrate their sex scenes.[8]
Release[edit]
Cornerstone Films is handling international distribution with Lionsgate.[9]
In October 2021, Lionsgate acquired U.K. distribution rights to the film.[10]
It premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival,[11] which at the last minute was changed to an online rather than in-person event because of an increase in cases of the Omicron variant during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, on 22 January 2022.[12][13]
Following the premiere, Searchlight Pictures acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film for Hulu.[14] On 11 March 2022, it was revealed the film would be released on Hulu on 17 June 2022.[15] The film was also released theatrically by Lionsgate UK in the United Kingdom on the same date.[16]
Reception[edit]
A review in The New York Times by Lisa Kennedy described the film as "a tart and tender probe into sex and intimacy, power dynamics and human connection."[17] Describing the two lead actors, her review says, "Thompson is terrifically agile with the script’s zingers and revelations. A relative newcomer, McCormack moves between wit, compassion and vulnerability with grace."[17]
In a review for RogerEbert.com, critic Sheila O'Malley praised the film, writing, "It's a relief to see a film so frank about sex, and so open to sex's complexities, especially when so much of current cinema is sexless to a disheartening degree. 'Leo Grande' cares about sex for older women, and not just sex, but the baggage associated with sex, and how that baggage robs us of joy and fulfillment. Also revelatory is the film's non-judgmental attitude towards sex work.[18]
Writing for the Los Angeles Times, critic Justin Chang wrote, "Good Luck to You, Leo Grande presents itself as a corrective, with an earnestness that verges on the Utopian; for all its low-key intimacy and emotional realism, this movie knows it's selling a fantasy of its own. But it's hard not to warm to that fantasy, or to embrace its still-rare vision of a woman learning to articulate and satisfy her most human impulses. It's good for Nancy. And for us."[19]
Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 97% based on 61 reviews, with an average rating of 8/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Sexual awakening stories aren't in short supply, but Good Luck to You, Leo Grande proves you can still tell one with a refreshing – and very funny – spin."[20]
