It is standard medicine that mental states can affect physical states. That’s how placebos work—when sham drugs improve health, working by inducing the body to generate hormones. But some claim that the mind goes even further in healing the body, operating through consciousness in some nonphysical manner. Can this make sense? 0:00did you know you focus on Consciousness
0:02there's this whole area of psychosomatic
0:04medicine that shows that how the uh the
0:07the mind the mental state can help the
0:09physical state in different ways but
0:11that's very uh uh that's very much
0:14mediated by the physical uh hormones and
0:17things going on when you talk about the
0:19interaction between the mind and the
0:21body is there some deep spiritual nature
0:25there or just purely physical activities
0:27going on well right now uh spiritual is
0:30an unknown term and you know we can
0:32argue that or discuss that for a long
0:34time I'd rather focus on things that we
0:37can really talk about and really related
0:39to this it's understanding the
0:40relationship between the mind and the
0:42body and so physically we're here but in
0:46this in the realm of conversation we
0:48seem to be somewhere as well and so the
0:50question is what is the relationship
0:51between this mental space and the
0:53physical body and how did this mental
0:55space come about and how did the mind
0:57come about okay and so for that we're
0:59really look looking at we've been
1:00looking at developmental psychology and
1:03Child Development and arguably just when
1:05you turn a computer on where a computer
1:07has to load its bios and and the hard
1:10disk spins and the operating system
1:11loads up for the mind to come develop
1:14you know there there seems to be you
1:17know for this mind to in education we're
1:19trying to educate people to be able to
1:21communicate from the realm of the mind
1:23and so it's really understanding how
1:25that comes to play and understanding the
1:28relationship of the Mind as it develops
1:30with the body so arguably when we're
1:33born I don't know if you remember when
1:34you were a baby but arguably there is no
1:38idea of mind it's fairly empty a blank
1:42slate and you know the behavioral
1:44psychology and a lot of psychologists
1:46that's one of the theories around this
1:48and what but what happens is we have
1:50awareness of the surroundings and we
1:52have Sensations in the physiology and
1:55what happens is as we become aware we
1:57notice that certain things happen in a
2:00repetitive way so there are certain
2:01Sensations that I may feel and then I
2:04might feel some liquid on my leg or you
2:06know poo poo so wee-wee poo poo and we
2:08start building a mentally constructed
2:10world view and so from this mother
2:12father crib room light all of these
2:15these things happen and so these things
2:18become Concepts in the mind but they
2:20actually bind to Sensations and
2:22processes in the physiology and so
2:24there's a binding between these ideas
2:26that we have in the mind and processes
2:29and Sensations in the physiology and so
2:31as we experience life we build a
2:33mentally constructed world view which
2:35then motivates us to act and behave and
2:38then the outer world the world then
2:42interacts with that based upon our
2:44intentions some things may work
2:46accidents may happen things may happen
2:48which then
2:50influence the the physiology in terms of
2:53triggering the autonomic nervous system
2:54or giving me a dopamine or feeling or
2:56you know this kind of a thing which then
2:58reinforces a mentally constructed
3:00worldview which reinforces behavior
3:02which reinforces the homeostasis of the
3:04physiology and so we end up in this this
3:07Loop arguably of behavior positive
3:10feedback yeah and so really trying to to
3:13to and so if we look at this mind-body
3:15relationship
3:17all of this ultimately has to do and so
3:19from that you build a mentally
3:21constructed world view and if you think
3:22about what the mentally constructed
3:24really world view really does is it
3:27regulates the energy in your physiology
3:29so for example if you've got a big
3:31project coming in and you get success
3:33you feel really elated and but if
3:35something bad happens your girlfriend
3:36breaks up with you or you lose your job
3:39or some your parents die or something
3:41like this you feel down and so these
3:43symbols these things that that that that
3:45that that I'm getting into a bit but
3:48these things are in the mind that that
3:49you have an emotional attachment to you
3:52know changes pers changes of perception
3:54in there will arguably change what's
3:56going on within your physiology in terms
3:58of the ability to regulate energy and
4:00maintain homeostasis which
4:03then can potentially create disease and
4:06because ultimately from a scientific
4:08perspective your body is just a
4:10collection of cells working together to
4:12keep the organism alive yeah I mean this
4:14makes eminent sense I mean this is but
4:16this is standard Western understanding
4:19of how the body and mind work together
4:20yeah
4:21and so we're is there any deep Insight
4:24in terms of what the mind is I mean this
4:26is very stable but but then precisely
4:29explained but the the interesting thing
4:30about this is from your perspective then
4:33I'm just a semantic token you know all
4:35of the conversations that we've had
4:36before based upon your past experiences
4:38get attached to me and so when I'm
4:40sitting here you're going to feel a
4:41certain way
4:42Etc and so all of your understanding and
4:46and feeling towards that you know come
4:49from that but then even the questions
4:51that you're asking in all of this
4:53within this
4:55are there are forces that are motivating
4:58these actions and behaviors and for most
5:00people they're tied to some story which
5:02is tied to for most people the
5:04underlying emotion driving the action in
5:06the story is going to be something based
5:08on your memories of the fear need or
5:10desire and so but the interesting thing
5:12from this is the physiology wants to
5:14maintain homeostasis so the body
5:16naturally wants to heal itself the cells
5:19independently want to heal themselves
5:21and we know that for example if I do
5:22this to you your eyes blink your breath
5:24holds you get a dose of adrenaline I've
5:26triggered your autonomic nervous system
5:28and so we know Western science
5:30perspective you know what's what's going
5:32on there but you know if if I say that
5:34you know your house just burned down or
5:36something like that arguably similar
5:39similar chemicals are being released
5:41into your bloodstream and from the cells
5:43of your body's perspective they don't
5:45know the difference right and so the
5:47thing is if we the the the question of
5:50health and mind-body relationship is
5:52arguably if we
5:53if we can loosen the mind's
5:57strings influence on the physiology the
6:00physiology will naturally maintain move
6:02towards a sense of homeostasis and
6:04health and so the question is what is it
6:06that takes you out of health and
6:08arguably it's it's this conditioned
6:10behaviors that usually have come from
6:12trauma or actions or a conditioned way
6:15of of acting which doesn't support the
6:18physiology or arguably this natural
6:20intelligence of these cells splitting
6:22and you know DNA strands replicating so
6:26what's the implication so what follows
6:27from that and what what should I do to
6:30be more healthy if that's true well so
6:33the the the trick to be more healthy is
6:35to listen to your body because there
6:37arguably there is a natural intelligence
6:38and for you you are very intelligent and
6:41you travel all around the world and I
6:43know your busy schedule and how stress
6:45influences that as well too and the
6:47interesting thing about for you about
6:49stress and we've talked about this
6:50before is it kicks your energy up now
6:52the other interesting thing is when
6:53we're a baby you know our energy and our
6:56ability was fairly low and our knowledge
6:57was fairly low so information and energy
7:00perspective but as you grow you know you
7:03become more capable and what
7:05enlightenment
7:06is potentially is the ability to reach
7:09escape velocity and so the question is
7:10can you maintain a high state of energy
7:13independent of context independent of
7:15the stories and the only way you can do
7:17that is to live from presence
