"Jesus Remembered" is the first installment in what will be a monumental three-volume history of the first 120 years of the faith.
Focusing on Jesus, this first volume has several distinct features. It garners the lessons to be learned from the quest for the historical Jesus and meets the hermeneutical challenges to a historical and theological assessment of the Jesus tradition. James D. G. Dunn (born 1939) is a British New Testament scholar who was Professor of Theology at the University of Durham prior to his retirement; he is also a minister of the Church of Scotland.
He has written many other books, such as The Evidence for Jesus , Jesus and the Spirit , New Perspective on Jesus: What the Quest for the Historical Jesus Missed , etc. He wrote in the Preface to this 2003 book, "It has long been a hope and intention of mine to provide a comprehensive overview of the beginnings of Christianity... My primary concern has been rather to draw attention to the principal (mainly textual) data which have to be taken into account when considering whether a tradition can be traced back to Jesus, or... to the initial impact made by Jesus' teaching and activity." (Pg. xiii, xvi)
He states early in the book, "There are three great questions for students of Christianity's beginnings: (1) What was it about Jesus which explains both the impact he made on his disciples and why he was crucified? (2) How and why did it come about that the movement which took off from Jesus did not after his death remain within first-century Judaism ... (3) Was the Christianity which emerged ... as a predominantly Gentle religion essentially the same as its first-century version or significantly different in character and kind?" (Pg. 3)
He admits, "John's Gospel is determined much more by John's own theological than by historical concerns. Consequently it cannot be regarded as a good source for the life of Jesus." (Pg. 40) He adds, "the character of John's Gospel as a theological, rather than a historical document, became more and more axiomatic for NT scholarship. Like the miracles of Jesus, though not quite so decisively, the Fourth Gospel had been effectively knocked out of the quest." (Pg. 41)
He summarizes, "I wish to press the case: (a) that individual traditions and groups of traditions were almost certainly formulated and circulated in oral mode, (b) that most of them were given the shape which has endured into the Synoptic Gospels during that oral phase, and (c) that the Evangelists... would probably had known many of these oral traditions independently of their knowledge of written collections... I believe (d) that in the stabilities and diversities of the tradition we can trace the continuities and variations in the performances/retellings of the tradition... I do not pretend I can offer proof positive of my thesis. But in dealing with Synoptic traditions, who can realistically offer proof positive of any thesis?" (Pg. 336)
He comments about the birth stories: "the heavy typologizing ... (Herod as Pharoah, Jesus as Israel in Egypt) leaves it very uncertain whether we can discern any historical events underlying the present story... the whole Egyptian episode, including Joseph and Mary's return to settle in Nazareth, does seem somewhat contrived. More disturbing ... has been the probability that Luke got his facts wrong in the reason he gives for Jesus being born in Bethlehem of Judea. The census under Quirinius took place in 6 CE... That census would not have applied to Galilee, which was Antipas's territory. We know nothing of a universal census throughout the Roman Empire, then or earlier. And the idea of a census requiring individuals to move to the native town of long dead ancestors is hard to credit. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Luke was mistaken in dating the census so early... Most disturbing for Christian pilgrim is the outcome that Jesus' birth in Bethlehem has to be left in question. Was the story to that effect contrived simply because of the Micah prophecy..." (Pg. 344)
In his chapter, "How Did Jesus See His Own role?" he concludes, "In one sense our findings thus far are disappointing. We have to conclude as likely that Jesus made no attempt to lay claim to any title as such; also that he rejected at least one which others tried to fit him to." (Pg. 761) He concludes, "(1) The only realistic objective for any 'quest of the historical Jesus' is Jesus remembered. (2) The Jesus tradition of the gospels confirms THAT there was a concern within earliest Christianity to remember Jesus. (3) The Jesus tradition shows us HOW Jesus was remembered... (4) This suggests ... that that essential shape was first put into words by and among those involved as eyewitnesses of what Jesus said and did." (Pg. 882)
This is a challenging, essentially "orthodox" life of Jesus that should be studied by anyone interested in the "historical Jesus."

`Jesus Remembered: Christianity in the Making' is the first volume in a planned three volume series on the origins and early years of Christianity by noted New Testament (NT) scholar James Dunn. The series is an ambitious undertaking and upon completion promises to be Dunn's Magnum Opus. In a broad sense the series, and especially this first volume, is situated in what is often referred to the `Third Quest' for the historical Jesus. Dunn attempts to distinguish his approach by focusing on how Jesus impacted and was remembered those who encountered him, rather, than attempting to get to an objective Jesus behind these remembrances. While I appreciate Dunn's effort to nuance his case, it feels very much like the standard Jesus Quest approach, he makes assumptions, examines data and makes conjectures about the historic Jesus.
The book has much strength. With regard to more general issues Dunn does an excellent job of highlighting the difficulties and potential pitfalls associated with this type of scholarship, e.g. translations, cultural context, textual archaeology, theological presuppositions etc. All of which are handled with Dunn`s characteristic insight and clarity. It is a helpful reminder to experts and novices alike. In addition Dunn makes a good case for a move away from a rigid literary-textual approach to the gospels. He argues that even if one supposes that ancient Israel was a comparatively literate society many of the gospel stories were likely well known and frequently recounted in public oral performances prior to the being captured in their present form. An environment, Dunn argues, would have allowed for the core messages to have been preserved despite some variability in performances. With respect to specific issues the text also has much to offer, I particularly enjoyed Dunn's overview of the `son of man' debate, - the question as to how this expression is best understood, is it a broad generic term, as in `one', or a titular designator as in the Daniel's tradition.
With regards to drawbacks, I offer a couple of thoughts.
First, the text is physically too large for a single volume at over a thousand pages (approx. 300-400 of notes and references!). This form of contemporary biblical scholarship is at once both impressive; engagement with such an enormous range of scholars, and frustrating, more concerned compilations of scholarly opinion with limited value-added analysis.
Second, while a fascinating and interesting field it is important to remain mindful that NT scholarship is highly speculative. It is its own type of historic fiction, where scholar and layman alike see what they believe, giving credence to interpretations and information they support while dismissing that which they oppose. As with others in the field Dunn falls prey to the classic problem of Historic Jesus study - creating a Jesus in the scholar's image - It seems unavoidable. While I greatly admire Dunn, he seems to be trying to fashion a Christian story which is acceptable to modern Western intellectuals, affirming the feasibility of belief in an historic resurrection yet positing a deflated Jesus largely devoid of the miraculous - it is difficult to see how such a Jesus could attract followers or inspire a religion?
Ultimately, this is an impressive work by one of today's leading NT scholars. I enjoy Dunn and will likely read the subsequent two volumes in the series. I recommend the book to students of the NT and the historic Jesus.

This is a scholarly work of some length and significance. I am not a scholar but have read fairly widely in the area of "the search for the historical Jesus". This, by far, the best of everything that I have encountered. At first, I wondered about the lengths that Dr. Dunn has gone to in the details presented in background to his main points. It did not take long to realize that his detailed explanations were well worth the time. This is a wonderful work from a real scholar who pursues the truth and does not let his own preconceptions intrude on his reasoning or his explanations.

"Christians have continued to affirm the resurrection of Jesus, as I do,
not because they know what it means.
Rather, they do so because, like the affirmation of Jesus as God’s Son,
‘the resurrection of Jesus’ has proved the most satisfactory and enduring of a variety of options, all of them inadequate in one degree or other as human speech,

They do so because as a metaphor, ‘resurrection’ is perceived as referring to something otherwise inexpressible, as expressing the otherwise inchoate insight that this life, including Jesus’ life, is not a complete story in itself but can be grasped only as part of a larger story in which God is the principal actor and in which Jesus is somehow still involved.
In short, ‘the resurrection of Jesus’ is not so much a criterion of faith as a paradigm for hope" (page 879)

그리스 고전들을 재발견한 르네상스인들은 당시의 세계가 중세 후기의 세계와 매우 다르다는 사실에 큰 감명을 받았고, 그 고전들을 원어로 읽고자 하는 욕구를 충족시켜 줄 방안을 모색했다. 역사 인식의 각성과도 같은 이러한 관심과 전개는 그리스도교 기원사에 대한 근대 학문 연구의 주요 원리와 방법을 낳았는데, "그 첫째가 역사언어학으로, 이는 단어와 문장의 의미를 저술 당시 그 단어와 문장이 사용된 방식을 참조하여 문헌의 원어에 비추어 면밀하게 분별하는 것이다. 둘째는 본문비평으로, 상이한 사본에서 수세기 동안 그리스도교의 전승과 편집에 의해 변개된 것을 포착하고 바로잡아 최선을 다해 원래의 문헌을 재구성하는 기술이다."(57-8)
종교개혁가들은 "서구 교회가 예수의 사도들과 교부들 당시의 교회에서 변해왔다고 믿었는데, 그 변화는 단순히 역사의 전개 과정 차원에서 비롯된 변화가 아니라 신약성서, 사도들, 교부들이 제시한 정당성을 한참 벗어난 변화"라고 판단했다. 따라서 16세기 서구 교회의 내부 논쟁에서 공유된 두 가지 인식은 "첫째, 교회의 전통이나 가시적인 형식과 실천은 때로 교정이 필요할 수 있다는 것이고, 둘째, 과거는 남용되는 현재에 대한 적절한 비평의 토대를 제공할 수 있다는 것이다."(60) 종교개혁가들은 "성서에는 스스로 해석하는(sui ipsius interpres) 힘이 있다"고 강조했고, 이를 바탕으로 로마 가톨릭 교회의 권위에 도전했다.(62)
"과거에 비추어 현재를 비판하는 르네상스의 관심이 가장 큰 영향을 끼친 지점은, 교회와 관련하여 예수가 진정 무엇을 의도하였는가라는 결론을 제기하는 부분이다."(64) 이는 도그마로부터의 탈주를 낳았고, 예수에 관한 그리스도교의 핵심교리를 다시 확신하려는 노력이 배가되었다. ※ 과학적 역사비평 방법
1. 실증주의 : 역사(과거)에는 그 역사학(학문 분야)이 자연과학과 유사하게 취급되도록 할 만한 객관성이 있다.
2. 역사주의 : 역사가는 스스로 역사적 사실을 다루면서 불편부당하고 객관적이며, 따라서 편견이 담긴 가치 판단을 피할 수 있다.
3. 계몽주의 : (하느님이 주신) 인간 이성은 참된 사실과 거짓 사실을 분별하는 과학적인 척도이다.
4. 뉴턴의 가설 : 세계는 인과관계의 '닫힌 체계'로서 불변의 법칙을 따르는 복잡한 기계와 유사하며, 따라서 모든 사건은 예측 가능하고 원인의 결과는 관찰 가능하며, 신의 개입 여지는 없다.
"계몽주의 시대의 합리주의 안에서 시도된 이성에 대한 과도한 강조는 반작용을 낳을 수밖에 없었다." 슐라이어마허를 통해 신학에 들어온 낭만주의의 영향은 "경건주의의 대체물로 찾아왔다."(78) 그는 예수를 ‘종교적 인격체’로 보았고, 이후 헤르만은 "예수에 대한 종교에서 돌이켜 예수의 종교로!", 곧 "그리스도인과 하나님의 교제를 위한 기초로서 ‘예수의 내면적 삶’에 대한" 탐구를 이어나갔다.(80) 하르낙은 그리스도교의 본질을 "하나님의 아버지 됨, 인간 영혼의 무한한 가치, 그리고 사랑의 중요성"으로 요약했다. "하르낙에 의하면 '예수에 대한 진정한 신앙은 교리적 정통의 문제가 아니라 예수가 행한 대로 행하는 차원의 문제'였다."(82)
19세기 후반의 자유주의적 정서는 '역사적 예수' 탐구에 종말론을 다시 도입했다. 바이스가 보기에 하느님의 나라는 "인간적 수단으로 실현할 수 있는 무엇이 아니라 하느님의 초월적 개입의 행위에 전적으로 의존하는 나라였다. 그것은, 윤리적으로 순수한 사회로 발전하는 것이 아니라 현재 질서를 끝장내는 것이라는 점에서 종말론적이었다. 그리고 그것은, 아직 오지 않은, 제자들의 사회에서도 아직 이루어지지 않은 미래였다."(91-2) 그리고 이는 "예수의 생애에 대한 역사적 탐구가 결국 신앙을 설명해야 한다는 정신 번쩍 나게 하는 깨달음이었다." 이러한 관점에서 볼 때 '역사적 예수'에 관한 모든 탐구와 해석은 '막다른 골목'에 불과했다.(96-7)
1차 세계대전이 펼쳐낸 파괴적인 현실은 '역사적 예수' 탐구의 주요 방법론을 폐기하기에 이른다. "선포된 말씀을 강조한 바르트의 신정통주의와 엄격한 '결단주의'에 입각한 불트만의 실존주의"는 '역사적 예수'에 대한 추가 탐구에 별다른 관심을 갖지 않았다.(99-100) 자유주의 개신교에 조종弔鐘을 울린 칼 바르트는 "우리 눈이 분별할 수 있는 한, 역사 안에는 신앙의 기초를 제공할 수 있는 것이 아무것도 없다."고 언명하였다.(125) 불트만은 초기 공동체의 메시지인 예수의 가르침 전통이 지속적으로 보존되어 왔으며, 현재의 삶에 양식을 부여한다는 '삶의 자리'(Sitz-im-Leben) 개념을 천명하였다.
20세기 초 종교사학파는 "그리스도교를 1세기 그리스-로마 세계에 등장한 많은 종교 운동 가운데 하나로 이해"(101)하면서, '그리스도교의 헬레니즘화'에 초점을 맞추었다. 타이센은 예수 전통을 사회학적 관점에서 "견유학파의 유랑 철학자에 빗대어 조명"하였고, 호슬리는 예수의 탈정치화에 맹렬히 반대하면서, 하나님 나라를 "세상의 끝으로서 ‘우주적 파국’을 뜻하는 옛적의 묵시적 종말론보다 사회의 회복과 사회적 삶의 갱신을 표상하는 '정치적 은유와 상징'의 차원에서 이해"해야 한다고 주장했다.(104-5) 크로산은 "급진적 평등주의를 요청하고 '브로커 없는 하나님 나라'를 선포한 '소작농이자 유대적 견유철인'으로서의 예수를 결론으로 제시한다."(112-3)
'역사적 예수' 탐구에 엄격한 역사적 방법론을 적용하지 않고 "신앙의 영역('이성이라는 필연적 진리')을 따로 상정"(122)해야 한다는 줄기찬 의문에도 불구하고, "어떤 종류의 역사적 예수의 탐구가 재개되어야 할 것인지의 질문을 가장 효과적으로 다시 제기한 사람들은 불트만의 학생들이었다." 케제만은 "역사적 예수와 신앙의 그리스도 사이를 너무 날카롭게 분리시켜 비연속성의 차원"으로 넘어가면, 역사적 예수를 "신화 속으로 해체해버릴 위험, 곧 가현설(docetism)의 위험"이 있다고 말했고, "공관복음서의 체제와 형태 자체가 (이미) 예수의 생애사를 신앙의 구성 요건"으로 간주하고 있음을 지적했다.(132-4)
"20세기 후반기의 예수 생애 연구에서 가장 희망적인 진척은 예수를 무엇보다 유대인으로 봐야 한다는 인식과 그 결과에 대한 보다 명확하고 공고한 파악이었다. 이러한 흐름을 ‘역사적 예수의 제3의 탐구’로 구분하는 것은, 나사렛 예수의 역사적 초상을 구축하려는 어떤 시도도 예수가 1세기 환경에서 살았던 1세기 유대인이었다는 사실에서 출발해야 한다는 확신이었다."(141) 여기에 더해 포스트모더니즘은 "저자에서 독자로, 텍스트 배후의 독서에서 그 전면의 독서로, 창문으로서의 텍스트에서 거울로서의 텍스트 이해"로 복음서 연구의 축의 전환을 가져왔다. 이제 의미는 "단순히 텍스트 ‘안에’ 존재하지 않고 독서의 행위 가운데 독자에 의해 창조된다."(152)
우리는 "자료에서 사실이 발견되기까지 해석과 해석자가 연루된다"는 점을 알아야 한다. "역사에서 문제가 되는 사실, 역사를 앞으로 움직이는 사실은 결코 의미가 제거된 ‘사실 그 자체’가 아니다. 단순히 일시적인 것 이상의 사실은 늘 의미 있는 것으로 경험되는, 그것의 의미/의의 내에서의 사실이다."(169) 가다머의 ‘영향사’(Wirkungsgeschichte) 개념에 따르면, 텍스트와 독자 사이의 "시간적 거리는 외려 '이해를 가능케 하는 긍정적이고 생산적인 조건'이며, 그 사이에 끼어드는 전통은 우리의 일부이다." 해석자의 의식은 "어느 정도 텍스트의 산물이다." 텍스트는 해석자의 의식을 '만들어내서'(effected), '효과적'(effectual)으로 올바른 질문을 찾도록 이끌어준다.(187-8)
"역사적 객관성이라는 계몽주의적 이상은 역사적 예수 탐구에 가짜 목표를 투사했다. 왜냐하면 그 초창기부터 탐구자들은 복음서 텍스트 배후에, 또 그것이 담아낸 전통들의 배후에 어떤 ‘역사적 예수’가 있다고 가정해왔기 때문이다." 되돌아 보면, ‘역사적 예수’는 "공관복음의 자료를 사용하여 19세기와 20세기에 구성해놓은 결과이지, 그때 당시로 되돌아간 예수와 우리가 복음서 전통 속의 예수상을 비판하기 위해 현실적으로 사용할 수 있는 역사 속의 인물은 아니다."(191-2) 공관복음은 예수의 제자들이 행한 일과 기억에 대한 증거를 제공하고, 그 "과거를 다시 현존하게 함으로써(Vergegenwartigung), 과거와 현재의 지평을 융합하는 ‘기억함’의 과정인 것이다."(198)

디자인(표지, 속디자인) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
내용 난이도 자체는 별 다섯개인데, 언급하는 주요 구절들을 모두 친절하게 나열해줘서 난이도를 줄여주고 싶지만, 그래도 어렵다. 두 권이나 되는 방대한 분량이라 별점을 좀 깎았다.
주요 공략 대상은 “역사적 예수 세미나 학파”들의 주제인 “역사적 예수”를 다룬다. 그래서 상당히 낯선 주제와 낯선 학문적 틀로 접근하기 때문에 접근성이 좀 떨어지는 편이다. 뭐든지 잘 알지 못한다, 라는 애매한 학자의 전형적인
모습도 보인다. 하지만 다루는 주제에서만큼은 저명한 학자의 모습을 보인다. 그렇지만 문자주의자에게 중간중간 짜증나는 부분이 있는건 애교로 봐주자.
상권이지만 사실은 저자의 역사적 예수찾기의 서론부분이 대부분이다. 하지만 그 또한 가치가 있고 후반부에 “하나님나라”라는 주제를 다루니 어쩔 수 없이 보게 될 것.
