Each of these historical miniatures is meant to look in detail at a remarkable moment that centres on an otherwise unremarkable man - in other words, how destiny is often touched by the commonplace. That is not quite how the book works out, however; the best of these stories do indeed offer miniature biographies of figures that wider historical accounts overlook, such as Grouchy at Waterloo and the writer of the Marseillaise. But others, such as Lenin's return to Russia, don't fit this scheme and feel oddly out of place. That's a slight shame, but it shouldn't distract too much from what is otherwise an excellent, highly readable book full of interest and intrigue.

Only 44 ratings! This is a joke right? I assume thousands of people have read this beauty, but kept it as hidden as their best kept secret. Diamonds in a hidden shelf.
I was already a Zweig-fan, but this collection (by Pushkin Press) not only confirmed but even fortified my admiration.
Book lovers of all countries unite! Not only book lovers: but also history lovers, peacekeepers, ...fuck it: people in general, should read this. It shows once again that history and factual anecdotes can be grander and greater and crazier than fiction.
In an insightfull, fresh & compelling way Zweig tells 10 history defining stories who were strangely marked or altered by one decision, pure (un)luck or weird coincidence. It leaves the reader wondering: what would have happened if Byzantium remained Christian, if Napoleon have had a different admiral, if President Wilson could have pushed his eternal peace ideology some more in Europe...
It's like reading about Newton's apple or Franz Ferdinand's bullet. But it's also as magical and thought provoking as reading Borges, Calvino or Millhauser, but then ... real, true, our history.
I would almost start a crusade for this book ;-)

Un libro magnífico, del cual lo primero que destaco es que como todo lo que he leído hasta ahora de Zweig, tiene una prosa formidable que siempre parece tener el ritmo y equilibrio perfecto.
Por otro lado le doy un enorme valor a la parte histórica. El libro se compone de 14 relatos que narran distintos acontecimientos que bien podríamos decir han marcado de alguna manera algún punto de inflexión importante en la historia, como por ejemplo la muerte de Ciceron, la conquista de Bizancio en 1453 o el desenlace de la batalla de Waterloo. Los detalles de la mayoría de los relatos me eran desconocidos, así que la lectura ha sido muy rica y despertó una gran curiosidad para que ahonde con más detalle en varios de los temas tratados.
Y por último, algo que también me maravilló en su momento leyendo la biografía de Maria Antonieta, y es la notable capacidad de Zweig para convertir cualquier situación, ficticia o histórica en un relato memorable. Zweig puede tomar cualquier hecho diminuto y convertirlo en estelar, porque principalmente es un escritor que sabe cómo contar una historia.
Un libro super recomendable; y si todavía no leyeron a Estefan Zweig, haganlo, que difícilmente los desilusione.

Zweig muestra la capacidad que tiene para contar historias, en este pequeño libro con miniaturas históricas se puede sentir su poder lírico, aún con algunos episodios que no eran de mi interés en especial, la manera de contarlos es tal que quiero saber más, escuchar más Handel, leer a Cicerón nuevamente, saber más del imperio Otomano. Se lee muy fácil y nos preguntamos de verdad, ¿Que hubiera sido de todo si eso no hubiera sido como fue? Seguro tantas cosas pasan ahora así, nos hace falta nuestro Zweig contemporáneo)

Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was a magnificent storyteller, and he proves this once again in this collection of historical stories. He presents 10 episodes from history in which the behavior of an individual was decisive, both positively and negatively. Both the descriptive and contemplative scenes are gems of writing, to the extent that he really manages to bring the past back to life. From the point of view of historians, there is of course something to criticize about that literary panache (see my commentary in my History account on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...), but these ‘shooting stars’ at least offer a nice spectacle.

The first two pieces, the discovery of the Pacific Ocean and the fall of Bysantium, had me bewitched. I read the first in line to embark a plane and the second on a beach in my beloved Sicily, both right after a grueling exam session, so part of my enthusiasm might be due to the fact that it had been way too long since I had taken a couple of hours just to read a book that had nothing to do with school. But I found both these accounts extremely moving and skillfully told. What caught me was not just the form, the style, but rather the content, and the rightness I felt in the choice, on Zweig's part, of these two moments as "stellar hours" of human history.
Actually, in all honesty, the choice of the discovery of the Pacific ocean baffled me a little at first. I believe I had subconsciously interpreted the title as moments when men's decisions were critical in the shaping of the course of history. My guess is this happened because I read the book in Italian, and the Italian title reads Momenti fatali, meaning moments ruled by fate and/or decisive for the future, as the English title recites. The overlapping of these two meanings in Italian had me think this collection would include accounts of events where things could have gone very very differently, had it not been for one silly twist of fate or one single decision (or lack thereof) of a single man. And in some cases, this supposition of mine proved to be right, as in the Waterloo story about Grouchy's indecisiveness, or the Bysantium story and the Kerkaporta inexplicably left unprotected. But the discovery of the Pacific baffled me, as I said. It would have been discovered, sooner or later, wouldn't it? Why was it fatale, fateful? And then I worked it out in my head: it wasn't the moments per se, but rather the men who carried these moments out.
I find it interesting that Zweig cites no historical sources whatsoever. This apparent lack of bibliography is what might be argued to place Decisive Moments in the realm of metahistory. How do we know how Balboa felt when he lay his eyes, first of the Westerners, on the Pacific ocean? Zweig reconstructs precisely this, the mind of the man. In doing so, however, in presenting historical moments in such a fictionalized and subjectivistic mode, he also gives way to his own personal bias. The result is often an overly-dramatic and excessively romanticized account where spontaneous genius rules true art, ambition can't lead but to ruin, and it's amoral to admire cunning but ruthless men. (The utter absence of women is another problem altogether, but we'll let it pass since the book dates back to 90 years ago.)
The collection also includes portraits of various artists (Handel, Goethe, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy) and I think these are the weakest pieces of the volume. I profoundly disagree with Zweig's Sainte-Beuverian view of arts, meaning I cannot relate to his account on the composition of Goethe's Marienbad Elegy, even though the core facts are of course true. Toltoy's piece was certainly creative, formally speaking, but so cloying, so partial on telling instead of showing (and I won't accept the theatrical form as a justification for this) that I couldn't help skipping a couple of paragraphs just out of self-preservation.
My conclusion is that I expected something different from what I actually got, and that might have distorted my perceptions a bit, but on the other hand, my tastes, especially stylistically and also ideologically (my preference here is for neutrality), run in a completely different direction than what Zweig presented the reader with in his Decisive Moments. Conceptually, this is a wonderful collection, but I'll grant myself the right to disagree on the modes of its realization.

الكتاب يصنف ضمن كتابات (التاريخ الأدبي) والغريب أن الكثير من قراء الكتاب يطالبون الكاتب بالتحليل والمصادر والمراجع والنقد التاريخي للمعلومة بينما يغفل البعض أن هذا النوع من الكتابة يتم توليفة نصوصه وفق منظور كتابي أدبي يغلب عليه النثر دون تحليل – رغم وجوده بنذره – ودون نقد أي إعادة كتابة الرواية التاريخية بأسلوب أدبي فقط.
بينما الكتب التاريخية تختلف حيث التحليل والقراءة الممنهجة النقدية، وهذا النوع كثير في أوروبا بالتحديد منذ نهاية القرن التاسع عشر وأنتشر في القرن العشرين حيث تغليب الجانب القصصي على الحدث لإضفاء نكهة وروح في النصو وهو يظهر من حين لآخر في الكتابات العربية على إستحياء..
يضم الكتاب مواضيع تاريخية لمعارك مفصلية أحدثت تحول في التاريخ مثل فتح القسطنطينية التي جعلها تتحول لدولة العثمانية في ذلك الوقت وخروجها من قبضة أوروبا وكذلك فصول مثل اكتشاف أمريكا والقطب الجنوبي مع بعثة سكوت، والمحيط الهادي، وفصل عن جوته مرثية مارينباد، وبداية الإتصال في العالم، وهزيمة نابليون. وغير الكثير من الأحداث..
يبدو لي مدى حزن الكاتب علي الأحداث والفواجع في حياته ومنها تقدم النازية في حياته وإنتصاراتها التي قادته لأن ينتحر حرنًا على هذا التقدم دون النظر لجنسيته ومعتقده ولكن الغريب أنه بعد قرابة ثلاثة أعوام تسقط النارية وكل ألمانيا وتنتهي الحرب العالمية الثانية (1945) وهو في قبره بينما أبقى لنا مجموعة رائعة من مؤلفاته الأدبية والتاريخية / الأدبية.
مع أن نهج الكتاب هو (التاريخي الأدبي) إلا أن المؤلف أمتعنا ببعض تحليلاته للكثير من الشخصيات التاريخية في الكتاب مع محاولات بسيطة لتحليل الحدث علمًا أنه غير مطالب بذلك في مثل هذا النوع من الكتابة إلا أنها وهبت الكتاب سحره الذي أبقاه ليومنا هذا
يتلاقى الكتاب في الكثير من مباحثه (فصول) كتاب آخر هو (( ساعات القدر في تاريخ البشرية)) وهو ما جعلني استنكر أمر الكتابين رغم أن هذا الكتاب صدر سنة (1927) أي يسبق كتاب محمد مفيد الشوباشي بـ(14) سنة، وقد طبع كتاب ستيفان في (7) طبعات فقط حتى (1928) عام، ومن الفصول المتاشبهة في العنوان (وتناول الأحداث وتستسل الزمن) هذا غير تشابه العنوان وهي فصول : 1 / سقوط القسطنطينية، 2 / اكتشاف المحيط، 3 / موقعة واترلو، و4 / مبحث الرئيس ولسون، و5 / بعثة سكوت للقطب الجنوبي، 6 / رحلة الزحف إلى الذهب.
علمًا أن الكاتب يشير بقوله في بدايته كتابه لأنه أقتبس (بعض) فصول الكتاب وهي (ثلاثة) بينما ما وجدته هو أكثر من ذلك بكثير. بينما يقع نصف الكتاب في الحديث عن (كليو باطرا) يبدأ الحديث فيما تبقى من النصف الثاني في الفصول التي أقتبسها دون إشارة من كتاب شتيفان تسفايغ ودون ذكر لإي مصدر وهذه ليست من الأمانة في شيئ. فالكتاب هو ترجمة شبه حرفية للكتاب الأصل الأول لتسفايغ بإستثناء فصل (كليو باطرا) فقط والله أعلم

نمره ی واقعی: دو و نیم - اگر ترجمه بهتر بود سه ستاره می گرفت
سه ترجمه
تا اونجا که من دیدم و یافتم از این کتاب سه ترجمه ی فارسی وجود داره: 1) ترجمه ای قدیمی از ا. لاله زاری - که در نسخه ای که من دیدم محل نشر و تاریخ چاپ نداره اما به ادعای سایت کتابخانه ی ملی از بنگاه مطبوعاتی صفی علیشاهه (یعنی این کتاب)؛ 2) ترجمه ای از داریوش کیانی در سال 1379 و منتشر شده در انتشارات کرمانشاه (یعنی این کتاب)؛ 3) ترجمه ای از ولی الله شادان در سال 1380 و منتشر شده در نشر فروزان روز (یعنی همین نسخه فعلی). در ضمن من به پی دی اف نسخه ی اصل آلمانی کتاب - چاپ 47 ام به سال 2000 از انتشارات فیشر - و به نسخه ی ایپاب ترجمه ای انگلیسی از آن از آنتئا بل به سال 2013 و منتشر شده از سوی نشر پوشکین (یعنی این کتاب)دسترسی داشتم. ایپاب ترجمه ی فرانسوی آن هم در دسترس است که من - سوای فهرستش - به آن نگاهی نکردم
منشأ ترجمه ها
منشأ ترجمه ی ا. لاله زاری مشخص نیست ولی می توان احتمال داد که از روی متن آلمانی انجام نشده باشد - با توجه به شرایط آن روزگار احتمالا از فرانسوی ترجمه شده. اما دو ترجمه ی دیگر منشأ مشخص دارند: ترجمه ی ولی الله شادان از فرانسوی و ترجمه ی داریوش کیانی از آلمانی است
تعداد داستان های ترجمه شده
تعداد داستان ها در این ترجمه ها و حتی در ترجمه های انگلیسی و فرانسوی یکسان نیست. دلیل این مطلب افزوده شدن تدریجی داستان ها در چاپ های اصل آلمانی کتاب است - و البته در مواردی گزینش مترجم. نسخه ی آلمانی ای که من به آن دسترسی داشتم دارای 14 داستان بود. میان سه ترجمه ی فارسی و ترجمه ی فرانسوی امری مشترک وجود دارد: دو داستان "شکست ویلسون" و "سیسرو" در هیچ کدام نیامده است - چون این دو داستان در چاپ های اخیر به اصل آلمانی کتاب افزوده شده اند؛ ترجمه ی انگلیسی مذکور از این دو داستان متأخر، تنها "شکست ویلسون" را آورده است
ترجمه ی لاله زاری 7 داستان از 14 داستان نسخه ی آلمانی را دارد: مربوط به فتح بیزانس (سلطان محمد فاتح)، کشف اقیانوس آرام (واسکو نونز بالبو)، سرود ملی فرانسه (روژه دو لیل)، نبرد واترلو (ناپلئون)، مرثیه ی مارینباد (گوته)، لحظه ی اعدام (داستایوفسکی) و کشف قطب جنوب (اسکات). ترجمه ی داریوش کیانی در کل شامل 10 داستان است: همه ی داستان های ترجمه ی لاله زاری، سوای داستان های مربوط به گوته و داستایوفسکی، به علاوه ی داستان های مربوط به فرار از خانه (تولستوی)، تصنیف اثر موسیقیایی ای مذهبی بعد از شفا یافتن (گئورگ فریدریش هندل)، کشف الدورادو (یوهان آگوست سوتر)، انقلاب روسیه (لنین)، و خط تلگراف میان اروپا و آمریکا (سایروس و. فیلد). ترجمه ی ولی الله شادان 12 داستان دارد یعنی کاملترین ترجمه است و همه ی داستان های دو ترجمه ی پیشین را شامل می شود - یعنی دوازده داستان (یعنی مثل اصل خود که ترجمه ی فرانسوی است). اما ترجمه ی انگلیسی مورد اشاره شامل ده داستان است: داستان های ذکر شده، سوای آنهایی که به تولستوی، گوته و داستایوفسکی مربوط اند، به علاوه ی داستان "شکست ویلسون" - یعنی 4 داستان اصل آلمانی را عامدانه حذف کرده
کیفیت ترجمه ها
انتظار من از ترجمه ی قدیمی ا. لاله زاری، گویا و روان بودن متن فارسی، و ترجمه ی نادقیق و آزاد بود - نوعی تصور تا حدی کلیشه ای از ترجمه های قدیمی؛ اما اتفاقا ترجمه تا حد زیادی منطبق با متن اصلی است و متن فارسی اش هم مزیتی نسبت به باقی ترجمه ها ندارد. به همین دلیل چیزی ندارد که برجسته اش کند - این عیب بزرگ را فراموش نکنیم که تنها شامل هفت داستان است. ترجمه ی داریوش کیانی ظاهر و چاپ خوبی ندارد و ظاهرش از دو ترجمه ی دیگر بدتر است. انتظار این است که به دلیل ترجمه شدن از اصل آلمانی با متنی بهتر و مطابق تر روبرو باشیم اما اینگونه نیست - ممکن است در مفردات ترجمه های بهتری عرضه کرده باشد اما انقدر اشتباه دارد که مزیت ترجمه از زبان اصلی را خنثی کند. در نهایت ترجمه ی ولی الله شادان که متأخرترین و کامل ترین ترجمه هست قرار دارد؛ چاپ متن قابل قبول و ترجمه هم در کل روان است؛ اما باز آنقدر اشتباه دارد که نتوان با قطعیت گفت همواره از ترجمه ی کیانی بهتر است. خلاصه ی کلام اینکه من ترجمه ی شادان را پیشنهاد می کنم به دلیل کامل بودن، ظاهر قابل قبول و روان بودن
من ترجمه ی انگلیسی داستان "شکست ویلسون" را که در ترجمه های فارسی نیامده از روی متن انگلیسی خواندم و حس کردم بیشتر جذبش شده ام - احتمالا به دلیل اطمینانی که نسبت به این ترجمه در قیاس با ترجمه های فارسی داشتم. قصدم این است که داستان سیسرو را هم از روی اصل آلمانی بخوانم اما از همین ابتدا پیدا است که برایم مشقت باز خواهد بود

سوایک در این کتاب رویکردی تا حدی رومانیک به تاریخ دارد: آنچه تاریخ را می سازد قهرمانان هستند؛ قهرمانانی که ناگهان باری بر دوش آنها گذاشته می شود و آنان یا با پشتکار و جدیت این بار را به منزل می رسانند و به مقامی ستوده می رسند یا آنکه تسلیم می شوند و از یادها می روند. در این نوع نگاه، ناگهانی بودن، گذرا بودن، و بیرون از اراده بودن از خصایص نبوغ و سرسختی و تسلیم ناپذیر بودن از خصایص قهرمان است. در چند داستان، ضرورت رنج کشیدن هم به اوصاف قهرمان افزوده می شود. به نظرم حداقل در سطح فردی می توان با این نگاه همراهی کرد یا حداقل همدل بود - اینکه آدمی در این جهان پرتنش و ناعقلانی جز سرکشی و نوعی جنون لجباز راهی به رهایی ندارد - که البته این هم جوششی است نه کوششی

Erstaunlich, wie wenig mir diese Sammlung von 12 historischen Miniaturen gefallen hat. Es steckt natürlich viel Phantasie und Subjektivität darin, wenn sich ein Schriftsteller zwei Dutzend weltbewegende Sekunden herauspickt, in denen das Schicksal der Menschheit eine neue Wendung bekam. Genauso theatralisch wie dieser Satz, war auch die Erzählweise Zweigs. Von dem hervorragenden Novellisten konnte ich nichts entdecken. Er überzieht die Geschehnisse mit einem wertenden Pathos, der mich fast an kleine Epen erinnern ließ. Und ich mag diese Art der Heldenverehrung nicht. Dostojewskis Hinrichtung, die kurz vor Vollzug, gestoppt wird, schreibt Zweig sogar in einer Art Versform. Und Tolstois Flucht vor der Frau, um in Ruhe sterben zu können, ist schon fast ein kitschiges Schauspiel.
