日本史に一度もなかった一世一元の元号制度(最大の陰謀家と言われる岩倉具視作成)を今も維持し(役所や銀行はみな元号で生年月日も元号)
何の関係もない江戸城をいまもなお占有させてありがたる国民、
天皇教の総本山=靖国神社の桜開花の程度が東京の基準。
明治政府が捏造した天皇教こそ日本人の心。
無宗教ではなく、天皇教です、間違いなく。

1.欠落説ー日本人は無宗教だから何々が欠けている.
2. 充足説ー無宗教で何がわるい. 欠けているものなどない. むしろ無宗教の方がよい, という開き直り.
3. 無宗教だと思っていたのは実は日本教のことだった.
補足: 欠落説への反論としての独自宗教説もある. 創唱宗教とは違う自然法爾、自然と共生する独自の宗教伝統がある、という強気の説.

それとも政府が作成した国家宗教を除くといことかな。

-인류세와 함석헌의 종교-

지난 4월 함석헌의 <뜻으로 본 인류역사>가 출간된 기념으로 <씨알의 소리>가 7.8월 특집으로 '인류세와 함석헌의 역사 인식'을 다루었습니다. 그 한 꼭지로 쓴 <인류세와 함석헌의 종교>를 약간 다듬어서 여기에 공유합니다.
얼마전 출간된 <토마스 베리 평전>의 한 저자 메리 에벌린 터커는 오늘날 서구에서 지구생태위기와 관련해 가장 경청되는 토마스 베리의 사상 속에 어떻게 동아시아 유교사상이 녹아 있는지를 충실히 드러냈습니다. 그녀는 일찍이 하버드 대학 세계종교연구센터가 주관한 '세계종교와 생태학'의 시리즈로 <유교와 생태학>을 엮어내기도 했지요.
저는 일찍 그를 "仁의 사도"로 보며 그 사상의 유교적 뿌리를 탐색해왔는데, 이번 인류세 물음과 더불어 살피며 이미 1930년대부터 시작된 그의 사유가 시대를 크게 앞선 것을 봅니다.
작년 가을 조선의 퇴계 사상과 서구 신유물론 등장의 문제를 다루면서 한국적 信學으로 퇴계사유를 자리 매김하고자 한 구조가 이번 글을 쓰면서 다시 보였습니다. 지면이 제약된 글에서 다루느라 충실히 표현하지 못했습니다.
물론 함선생이 30년대 이후 나중에 떼이아르 드 샤르뎅도 만나고 여러 과학적 발견과 더불어 인류 역사의 진행에 대한 이해를 더 전개시켰겠지만, 오늘 미국의 떼이아르 드 샤르뎅이라고 불려지는 토마스 베리의 사상보다 선취된 것이 많이 보입니다. 그 이유는 仁의 사도 함선생이 토마스 베리의 중국유교와의 만남보다 휠씬 더 그 몸에 조선 유교적 토양을 담지하고 있어서가 아닌가 생각합니다.

시작하는 말: 인류 삶의 시대구분과 함석헌의 시대 이해

오늘 우리는 과거 역사 공부를 하면서 예를 들어 고대가 지나고 중세가 왔으며, 중세가 지나고 지금의 현대가 왔다고 큰 주저함 없이 말하곤 한다. 그런데 사실 거기서의 전환이란 엄청난 것이었을 터이고, 후대 사람들은 그 구분을 뚜렷이 말하지만, 당시 전환기에 살았던 사람들은 대부분 그것을 잘 의식하지 못하고 그저 일상을 살았을 것이다. 오늘 우리에게 점점 더 빈번히 들리는 인류세(Anthropocene)라는 구분도 어쩌면 그렇게 될지 모르겠다. 지금 전(全) 지구적으로, 또는 전 우주적으로 큰 전환(the turning Point)의 시기라고 곳곳에서 말하고 있지만, 일반인들은 그렇게 실감하지 못하고 있다. 그러다가 지난 몇 년간 혹독하게 겪은 코로나 펜데믹이나 3차 세계대전, 인류 핵전쟁의 위기 등이 거론되면서 같이 이야기되는 우크라이나 전쟁, 그리고 무엇보다도 점점 더 뚜렷이 목도되는 세계 기후위기와 생태 재난 앞에서 이것이 무엇인가를 묻기 시작했다.
이와 같은 중차대한 때에 함석헌기념사업회에서 새로 펴낸 『뜻으로 본 인류역사』는 선생의 시대를 크게 앞서는 선각자적 의식과 그러한 시대의 전환과 함께 종교와 종교인의 역할이 무엇일 수 있을지를 다시 한번 잘 밝혀주셨다. 선생은 이 글을 이미 1930년대에 시작하셨는데, 우리가 잘 알고 있는 『뜻으로 본 한국역사』와 쌍을 이루는 이 책의 생각들이 나온 때는 한국 민족이 일제강점이라는 큰 고난의 현실에 놓여있었고, 기독교는 주로 서구 선교사들의 근본주의 신앙에 경도되어 있었으며, 국제적으로는 만주사변과 유럽에서의 나치 등극 등, 인류 제국주의가 다시 제2차 세계대전으로 향해가던 암울한 시기였다. 이때 선생은 김경재 교수님의 서문이 잘 밝히는 대로, 오늘도 대부분 기독인이 서로 연결을 잘 짓지 못하는 과학적 진화론과 기독교 신앙을 연결하였고, 가난한 식민지의 한 지성인이었지만 인류 국가주의와 제국주의를 비판하며 대안적 민족관과 국가관을 제시했고, 서구 현대 자본주의 비판, 고난의 문명사적 의미, 종교와 神과 영성에 관해서 크게 열린 사고를 드러내셨다. 참으로 놀라운 선취성이고, 오늘 우리가 지구인으로서 ‘인류세’를 말할 때, 거기서 동아시아 한국인으로서, 그리고 종교인으로서 나름의 경험과 지혜를 보탤 때 큰 시사가 될 수 있다고 생각한다.

1. 지구 지질대의 새 이름 인류세

우리가 이미 들었듯이 ‘인류세(Anthropocene)’라는 단어는 노벨상 수상자인 대기화학자 파울 크뤼천(Paul Crutzen)이 지난 2000년에 처음으로 공식적으로 썼다고 한다. 그는 한 학회의 소식지에 기고문을 냈고, 학술회의장에서 “우리는 인류세에 살고 있습니다!”라고 외쳤다고 전한다(얼 C. 엘리스, 『인류세』, 김용진·박범순 옮김, 고유서가 2021). 오늘의 과학적 진화론에 따르면 지구는 138억 년 전 거대한 폭발(빅뱅) 함께 시작된 우주에서 수십억 년이 흐른 후 약 45억 년 전 먼지와 기체가 응집되면서 온전한 행성으로 형태가 갖추어졌다. 거기서 최초의 생명체는 38억 년 전 박테리아로 나타났을 것이다. 4억 8000년 전 생물의 서식지가 육지로 확장되었고, 이후 엄청나게 다양한 형태로 진화했으며, 그러나 그사이 수억 년에서 수천만 년 전 사이에 있었던 다섯 번의 대멸종 시기가 있었다. 거기서 대부분의 생물종은 날지 못하는 공룡들처럼 완전히 멸종했다고 한다. 하지만 그런 가운데서도 6500만 년 전의 영장류에 이어서 280만 년 전 인간의 직계 조상인 호모(Homo) 속과 초기 인류인 호모니드가 출현하여 석기를 만들고 불을 통제했으며, 30만 년 전에 호모 사피엔스가 출현했다.
 
지금 우리가 말하는 인류세는 45억 년 지구 지질시대의 구분 중 가장 최근에 해당하는 260만 년 전에 시작된 신생대 제4기의 ‘홀로세(Holocene)’에 연결된다. ‘완전히 최근’이라는 뜻의 홀로세는 지금으로부터 약 1만 1700년 전에 시작되어서 1만여 년 전 신석기 시대로의 전환기에 농경사회를 냈고, 약 5000년 전의 청동기 시대, 약 3000년 전의 철기시대부터 현재까지 걸쳐있다. 지구는 지난 260만 년 동안 여러 번의 추운 ‘빙하기’를 겪어왔는데, 그러면서 지구가 따뜻해질 때 탄소를 방출하고 추워질 때는 탄소를 흡수해 보관하는 나름의 기후 역학 체계를 형성해 왔다. 가장 최근의 홀로세는 상대적으로 따뜻해져서 얼음이 물러간 간빙기에 해당한다.
 
그런데 홀로세에서 인류세, 즉 인간 문명이 이렇게 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 형성된 지구 기후 역학 체계를 흔들 수 있을 정도로 능력이 거대해진 시기를 언제부터로 보는가는 학자들에 따라서 다르다. 지구를 보호하는 오존층 파괴나 세계적인 기후변화 등을 조사하면서 크로첸은 인류세를 화석연료 연소로 인한 이산화탄소 배출과 연결해서 18세기 말 산업혁명과 함께 시작되었다고 본다. 하지만 다른 편에서는 그보다 먼저 초기 인류가 불을 통제하기 시작한 시기, 또는 농업이 시작된 1만 년 전 등을 들기도 한다. 이처럼 아직 인류세를 지구의 새로운 지질시대로 공식 인정하는 문제에 있어서 논의가 많고 세부사항에서 차이가 나지만, 그러나 오늘 인류세가 점점 더 하나의 보편 이야기가 되는 것을 보면, 인류 문명이 지구 시스템에 점점 더 “거대한 가속”으로 영향을 미치고 있다는 사실 앞에는 모두가 겸허히 고개를 숙이는 것 같다.
 
2. 함석헌의 ‘하나님’ 존재 증명과 우주의 시작
 
선생은 이미 이 책의 서언으로 “세계사는 우주적 역사다”라고 선언하였다. 그러면서 역사라고 하면 인간의 일인 줄만 알기 쉽고, 인간의 역사는 단지 인간이나 지구만의 역사라 생각하기 쉽지만, “사람은 우주적 산물이요, 우주를 대표하는 자요, 우주에 향하여 도전하는 자기 때문에 인사(人事)는 인사만으로 달아서 알려지는 것이 아니요, 우주적 대국을 보는 큰 눈을 가지고 우주와의 산 관련에 있어서 달아서만 알 수 있는 것이다”라고 하였다(함석헌, 『뜻으로 본 인류역사』, 함석헌기념사업회 2023, 23쪽). 대단히 웅대한 관점이다. 이후 선생은 이렇게 지구도 넘어선 범 우주적인 시각에서 당시 그가 얻을 수 있었던 여러 지질학적 정보와 생명현상과 인간 문명의 전개에 관한 지식을 모아서 ‘진화’의 관점에서, 그러나 그것이 좁은 의미의 과학적 ‘진화론’이 아니라 그 안에서 다시 성서와 종교의 “뜻”을 찾는 사유와 신앙의 의미론을 펼쳐내신다. 그는 “진화란 진보는 아니다. 변화다”라고 하고, “이 우주는 알이다. ... 이 대우주는 생명의 일대 큰 알(巨卵)이다”라고 하는데, 이것은 온 우주의 생명성과 살아있음, 그 끝없이 되어감의 역동성 대한 깊은 신뢰와 직관을 밝히신 것이다. 그는 “역사상의 시대를 나눔에 기계적 방법으로만 만족하는 것은 역사를 가지고 생명의 일로 알지 않기 때문이다”(같은책, 42쪽)이라고 일갈한다.
이 말은 그가 온 우주의 일이란 살아있는 ‘생명’의 일이고, 그래서 거기에는 탄생과 자람과 사라짐이 있으며, 또한 그러므로 거기에는 분명 그 변화의 ‘목적’이 있을 수 있다는 것을 언명하신 것이다. 그 일을 그는 “생명은 항상 보다 높은 자유로 향하여 나가지 않았던가?”라고 말하고, 알에서 깨어나 더 큰 자유로 나아가는 일, 또 다르게 말하면 보다 인간적으로 “인격의 구성”이라는 말로도 밝히신다. 이렇게 선생이 인류 역사와 우주를 이해하는데 그것이 단지 과학적 분석의 일이 아니고 “정신적·해석학적” 일이라는 것을 강술하고, 그래서 거기서 ‘뜻’을 찾고, 성서와 종교의 일과 과학과 진화론의 일을 “종합”하려는 시도는 주목할 만하다. 그 일을 위한 선생의 ‘하나님’ 존재 증명은 깊은 논리를 담보하고 있다.
 
선생은 오늘의 과학자가 생명의 기원을 추론하는 일을 어린아이가 자신의 탄생 시의 경험을 그 어머니가 말해주지 않고도 알 수 있다고 하는 것과 마찬가지라고 보신다. 어떤 어린아이라도 어머니나 그보다 먼저 태어난 어떤 이의 설명이나 이야기를 듣지 않고는 자신의 처음 때를 알 수 없다. 그런데도 다 안다고 주장한다면 그것은 어리석고 위험한 일이 될 수 있는 것처럼, 그렇게 오늘의 과학자가 생명의 물질적 현상을 관찰하여 그 근원을 추정하여 생명의 모든 것을 알 수 있는 것처럼 하면 그것은 매우 위험천만하다는 것이다(같은 책, 66쪽). 다시 말하면 이것은 모든 인간 인식과 이해의 선험적 조건성과 한계, 상대성을 인정하는 일이고, 그것이 무엇보다도 중요하다는 것을 강하게 밝히신 것이라 생각한다.
 
그런 가운데서 선생은 하나님이란 우리가 잘 아는 유명한 <출애굽기> 3장 14절의 모세 이야기를 가져와서 “하나님은 자기를 있으려 하여서 있으려 하는 자”로 밝힌다. 여기서 우리가 많이 들었던 ‘스스로 있는 자’라는 정태적 해석을 지양하고 두 번이나 “있으려 하여서” “있으려 하는”이라는 표현을 쓰는데, 그것은 선생이 얼마나 하나님의 ‘능동성’, ‘역사성’, ‘창조성’을 드러내려고 하는가를 알게 한다. 한 마디로 하나님을 ‘살아있는 생명의 영’, 동아시아적 전통의 언어로 하면 ‘생리(生理)’로 말하기 위함이라고 이해하는데, 다시 더 말해보면, 바로 ‘천지의 낳고 살리는 마음과 원리’, 즉 ‘천지생물지심(天地生物之心/理)’을 말씀하려는 것이라고 본인은 보는 것이다. 그래서 만물은 그 안에 항상 ‘있으려는’ 마음과 원리를 가지고, ‘있으려 하는’ 것이기 때문에 “생명은 그 본질로서는 있는 자나 역사적으로는 항상 있으려 하는 자다”라는 말의 증거가 된다. 그러므로 온 우주 존재의 역사는 “생명이 있으려 하는 데서 물질이 나오고, 식물·동물이 나오고, 세계가 나온다”라는 것이 진리라는 것이다(같은책, 125쪽).

3. 과학적 진화론의 역(逆)순으로서의 함석헌 정신(理) 이해

‘생명이 있으려 하는 데서 물질이 나오고, 식물·동물이 나오고, 세계가 나온다’라는 말은 대단히 전복적인 선언이다. 함 선생 자신도 지적하였지만, 하나님을 ‘있으려 하여서 있으려는 자’, 다른 말로 하면 ‘살아있는 창조의 원리(生理)’로 파악하여서 우주 만물의 기원으로 본다는 것은 우리가 보통 듣듯이 과학적 진화론자나 지금 서구에서 현 인류세 위기를 돌파하고자 크게 유행하는 신유물론적 실재론과는 다른 방향을 지시하는 것이다. 오히려 “본말이 거꾸로” 되어서 함 선생은 ‘정신(理·靈)’이 먼저이고, 그 정신이 물질을 내고, 생물들을 내며, 온 우주를 정신화, 영화(靈化)할 것이라는 전망을 나타낸 것이다. 나는 이것이 더 실재적이라고 생각한다. 아니 더 세밀히 말해보면 서구 현대에서 진화론과 기독교 신앙을 화해시키고자 선구적 역할을 한 떼이아르 드 샤르뎅(Teilhard de Chardin, 1881-1955)의 언어대로, ‘정신과 물질이 따로 있는 것이 아니라 정신으로 되어가는 물질이 있을 뿐이다’라는 것이 더 정확한 언술일 것이다. 이렇게 정신(理)과 물질(氣)이 불이적(不二的)으로 있어서 서로 떨어져 있지 않지만(불상리不相離), 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 그 둘이 무조건으로 그냥 하나라거나 섞으려 해서는 안되고(불상잡不相雜), 정신(하나님의 영 또는 생리)이 끊임없이 물질을 현현 시키려(“있으려”) 하면서 그 안에 생명의 이치(理·靈)나 도(道)로서 함께 하고, 물질(존재)이 있다는 것은 바로 그 생명의 영과 하나님이 안에서 활동하시는 것의 증거라는 것을 말하려는 표현이라고 이해한다. 이런 맥락에서 함 선생은 “어류·파충류·포유류가 인류를 낳은 것이 아니요, 인간적인 것이 도리어 그 모든 것의 존재 근원이다”(같은 책, 126쪽)라고 발언하셨다. 이것은 본인이 보기에 마치 예전 퇴계 선생이 당시 젊은 학도 기고봉(奇大升, 1527-1572)이 리기(理氣)의 관계를 氣(물질) 주도적으로 보면서 둘을 쉽게 하나로 섞으려는 병폐에 빠진다고 경계하신 것과 유사하다(이은선, 「퇴계 사상의 신학(信學)적 확장-참 인류세 세계를 위한 토대(本原之地) 찾기」, 『퇴계학보』 153집, 2024.04, 133쪽 이하).
 
함석헌 선생의 언어로 다시 말하면 우주 진화와 역사에서의 ‘뜻’을 놓치지 않으려는 것이었고, 퇴계 선생의 의미에서 보면 ‘리(理)’와 ‘천(天)’의 차원을 함몰시킬 수 없다는 의지였을 것이다. 함 선생은 역사에서 뜻에 대한 감각을 잃는 것을 괴테의 파우스트가 지성주의(과학 또는 氣 주도성)라는 악마의 유혹에 빠진 것과도 비유하면서 “저희가 지성주의로 달아난 때에 역사는 말씀에서 의지로, 의지에서 사업으로 타락하였고, 그 순간 악마에 의하여 정문頂門에 일침을 맞은 것이다”라고 말씀하였다(같은 책, 27쪽). 여기서 ‘의지’라는 말은 서구적 근대 문명의 자아 중심주의, 개인적 주관주의, 인간중심주의 등이라고 할 수 있고, ‘사업’이라는 말은 오늘 인류 문명의 자본주의 국가나 공산주의 국가가 차별 없이 빠져있는 경제 제일주의, 실리주의, 성장 우선주의 등을 비판하는 언어라고 할 수 있겠다.

4. 인류세 이해의 새로운 토대와 함석헌 정신(理·靈) 이해

이렇게 함 선생이 우주 존재 원리를 물질이나 氣로 보지 않고 ‘있으려 하여서 있으려는 자’의 살아있는 정신과 영, 또 다르게 말하면 생리(生理)로 본 것은 오늘 우리 주제가 되는 인류세를 다르게 전망하는데 좋은 근거가 되고, 근본적인 지지대로 역할 할 수 있다고 본인은 이해한다. 오늘 지구 지질대의 이름을 바꾸어야 할 정도로 근대 인류 문명이 지구 생명체에게 반(反)생명적이어서 대부분 인류세를 말할 때 부정적인 의미로 논하고 있다. 지구 생명 대멸종과 더불어 말하고, 인간종 없이도 지구 생명체는 계속 유지되면서 인간종의 멸종을 오히려 새로운 시작으로 말하기도 하고, “단순히 세계-그-자체(world-in-itself, 객관적)가 우리에게-있어서의-세계(world-for-us, 주관적)와 다른 점을 생각하는 것으로는 충분하지 않다. ... 우리-없는-세계(world-without-us)라고 부르는 것을 적극적으로 탐구”해야 한다는 주장의 근거가 되기도 한다(스티븐 샤비로, 『사물들의 우주-사변적 실재론과 화이트헤드』, 안호성 옮김, 갈무리 2021, 130쪽).
그러나 과연 그럴까? 설사 그럴 수 있다 하더라도 그렇다면 여기 지금의 인간과 인간 문명에 남은 일은 그저 손 놓고 대 멸망을 기다리던가, 아니면 그때까지 더욱더 최대한의 개별적 쾌락을 추구하던가, 또 아니면 절대 무의미의 진공 속에서 더할 수 없는 허무주의자가 되는 길밖에 남지 않게 되는데 그것이 과연 우리 인간이 가야 할 길인가? 이에 대한 다른 길로서 본인은 함 선생이나 조선 정신의 理 의식이 역설하듯이 이 세상에 현현한 모든 물질(존재)은 그 안의 ‘있으려 하여서 있으려는’ 정신과 영의 구조물과 열매이고, 그 정신은 낳고 살리는 힘으로서, 그래서 물질은 단순히 죽어있는 것이 아니라 살아있는 생명체이므로 존귀하게 대하고, 그와의 관계를 서구 생태학자 토마스 베리가 강조하듯이 ‘주체 대 주체의 관계, “주체들의 친교(communion of subjects)”로 본다면, 그것이 훨씬 더 생명적이고, 인간적이며, 영적이고 종교적이지 않은가 생각한다는 것이다(메리 에벌린 터커 외 지음, 『생태 사상의 선구자 토마스 베리 평전』, 이재돈·이순 옮김, 파스카 2023, 347쪽).
 
이렇게 본다면 주체라는 의식과 상대를 주체라고 인지할 수 있는 자기반성의 인간 정신과 인간성(仁)은 물질의 맨 나중의 현현이 아니라 오히려 이미 처음에 모든 물질의 내재와 씨ᄋᆞᆯ로 선재하는 것이고, 그것이 목표가 되어서 오늘의 인류세를 이끌 토대와 목표가 되므로, 그렇다면 인간 의식의 현재적 부정적인 현현으로 그 인간성 자체를 별 의미가 없거나, 또는 있으나 마나 한 것으로 한쪽으로 치우고자 하는 것은 섣부르고 잘못된 생각이라는 것이다. 함 선생은 인류가 지구의 빙하와 더불어 그 역사를 같이한다고 할 수 있다고 지적하면서 인류의 한 조상인 네안데르탈인은 제4 빙하기의 그 어려운 시기를 근 10만 년 동안 살아왔다는 탐구 결과를 언급한다(같은 책, 141쪽). 또한, 현대 서구인지학자 루돌프 슈타이너(Rudolf Steiner, 1861-1925) 같은 이는 지구 땅이 인간 시신을 계속 받지 않았다면 오늘과 같은 고도의 정신적 진화를 이루지 못했을 것이라고 한다. 즉 인간 정신(理)이 담지 되어 있던 인간 몸은, 아니 다시 말해보면 인간 정신과 몸이 하나로 현존하였을 때가 지나서 그 몸이 땅에 묻히게 되었을 때라도 거기서 인간 몸은 다른 동물 몸이나 식물, 광물이나 기계의 몸과는 다르다는 것이다. 그러한 인간 몸이 없이 지구 생명이 지속할 수 없다는 것이고, 그런 뜻에서 인간 문명의 사라짐이 지구에게 결코 아무것도 아닌 것이 아니라는 것이다.

5. 함석헌의 리기(理氣) 통합적 문명이해와 종교
 
이러한 맥락에서 함 선생이 인류 역사와 문명의 진화에서 지리(地理)라든가 인종, 민족, 국가 등을 해석하는 시각이 무척 흥미롭고 의미 깊다. 우리가 오늘 특히 과학의 시대에서는 한 사람의 외모나 정체성, 성격 등을 밝힐 때, 쉽게 듣는 설명으로 지리나 인종, 민족 등 외적 요인들을 들어서 말하는 것이다. 그러나 선생은 그러한 설명은 매우 “유물론자류”의 것이라고 일갈한다. 그러면서 예를 들어 지리가 역사의 원인이 된다고 생각해서는 안 되는데, 오히려 “지리는 원인이 아니요, 무대와 마찬가지로 재료”일뿐이라는 것이다(같은 책, 186쪽). 이와 마찬가지로 인종이나 민족, 국가 등도 그렇게 보시는데, 하지만 그러면서도 동시에 “국가는 결코 방편이 아니다. 생활을 위한 방편이 아니다. 국가 생활 그 자체가 하나의 가치이다”라고 밝히신다(같은 책, 208쪽). 즉 그것은 지리나 인종, 민족, 국가 등의 외적 조건과 그 다양한 분포를 결코 생명 삶을 위한 절대로 보지는 않지만, 그러나 오늘 우리가 또 다른 사유의 장에서 쉽게 하는 것처럼 그것을 아무것도 아닌 것으로 간단히 한쪽으로 치워버릴 수 있는 것이 아니라는 강조이다. 그보다는 그 자체가 가치이며, 그 다양성과 분화와 현현의 의미(氣)를 강조하시는 것을 말한다. 다시 말하면 그가 얼마나 정신과 물질, 영과 몸, 理와 氣의 통합적인 사상가인가를 드러내 주는 것이라는 의미이다. 그는 인종은 “인종을 이기기 위한 인종”이고, 민족은 애증의 감정으로서 “사랑의 깊은 맛”을 배우고, 참된 사해 동포의 이념이 그 가운데서 나오는 “민족을 넘어서기 위한 민족’이라고 본다(같은 책, 201쪽). “진실한 종교를 위해서 건전한 국가는 필요하다”라는 것이고, 이것은 그가 일(一·理)과 다(多·氣)의 불이적 관계를 깊이 숙지하는 모습이라고 본인은 이해한다.
 
6. 참 인류세를 위한 지향과 한반도 종교의 역할

함 선생은 우리가 익히 들었듯이 조선 역사를 ‘고난’의 역사로 보신 것처럼 세계 역사도 마찬가지로 인정한다. 우주를 거대한 ᄋᆞᆯ로 보아서 그 알에서 생명이 탄생하고, 새로운 전환과 변화가 있으려면 기존의 껍데기가 깨어지고 부서지는 고통과 포기가 있어야 하듯이 “모든 위대한 변화의 순간은 희생의 순간이다”라고 앞의 토마스 베리도 지적한 대로 지금 인류 문명의 현실은 새로운 시간과 공간을 위해서 어떤 막대한 고난과 희생 앞에 놓여있는지 모르고, 그것을 쉽게 가늠하기 어렵다. 하지만 또 한편으로 이 현실을 “자연을 통한 계시에 눈뜨라는 영웅적 소명”을 깨닫는 시기로 본다면(토마스 베리, 같은 책, 409쪽) 상황은 훨씬 더 달라질 것이다. 함 선생은 인류의 역사가 정신의 역사인 이상 결국 “종교의 역사”라고 선포하신다(같은 책, 234쪽). 그리고 모든 사상의 절정에는 神이 앉는바, 고상한 도덕은 종교사상 없이 있을 수 없고, 고상한 도덕 없이 문명의 발달은 있을 수 없다고 하면서 결국 기독교 인격 신관을 인류 종교의식의 정점으로 보는 입장을 드러내신다. 하지만 그도 “문제의 중심이 근원에서 구조로 옮겨진 것이다(같은 책, 48쪽)”라는 말을 하면서 그가 ‘하나님’이라고 고백하는 초월적 기원이 점점 더 내재의 ‘구조’로 자리를 옮겨 앉는 것이 진화의 방향이라는 것을 인정하는 뜻이라면, 지금까지의 서구 인격신적 하나님 이름보다는 앞에서 함께 언급한 동아시아 종교 전통의 생리(生理)나 理, 易, 道 등의 언어가 새로운 시대를 종교에서 더 적실한 이름일 수 있다고 나는 생각한다.
 
선생은 유교·도교의 중국이나 불교의 인도에 비해서 “우리나라 종교, 틀려먹어서”라는 말을 한다. 즉 이웃 나라들이 종교적 사유의 심각성을 이룬 데 반해서 한국은 그렇지 못했다는 것이다. 하지만 본인은 그렇게 생각하지 않는다. 오히려 이제 한국의 역할이란 이 인류세 문명이 오기까지 지구 땅에서 태동한 지구 동서의 온 종교들을 함께 통섭해서 지구 생명체 모두를 위한 ‘보편 종교(a common religion)’로 거듭나도록 하는 일에 놓여있다고 보는 바이다. 그래서 그 토대에 근거해서 앞으로의 시간을 ‘좋은 인류세’, ‘참된 인류세’로 나아가게 하는 일이라고 보는데, 지금 이 지구상에 한국 땅에서만큼 오늘도 인류의 제반 종교들이 여전히 어깨를 나란히 하고 함께 역동하는 곳이 없기 때문이다. 또한, 함 선생도 맹자의 말을 빌려서 ‘생어우환(生於憂患) 사어안락(死於安樂)’이라고 했듯이 고난 속에서 참된 생명이 꽃피는 것처럼 그동안 한국 민족이 겪어온 역사의 고난과 지금 21세기 남북으로 분단된 한반도가 오늘 세계 갈등과 혐오, 싸움의 최전방에서 앞에 두고 있는 극심한 고난과 위기의 처지가 절대 무의미하지 않다고 믿기 때문이다.

마무리하는 말: 마음속 사랑(仁)의 불을 지닌 인동설(人動說)의 시공으로

오늘 인류세를 말하는 우리 시대의 변환을 제2의 차축 시대라든가 제2의 코페르니쿠스적 전환기, 또는 인간이 첫 번째 불을 발견한 것에 비유해서 두 번째로 불을 발견한 것으로 말하기도 한다. 거기서 그 두 번째 불이란 바로 우리 가슴 속의 ‘사랑(仁)’, 우주의 온 존재를 고유하게 주체로 보는 영적 감수성, 심지어는 우리가 제조한 기계조차도 그리 보는 다른 차원의 깊은 호혜적 공감력이라고 할 수 있다. 예전 불을 처음 발견한 인류가 그 불의 지혜로운 사용과 서로 간의 선물적 나눔으로 놀라운 인류 문명의 창조자가 되었듯이, 두 번째 우리 마음 안의 사랑과 자비, 인내의 인간적 불을 통해서 인간은 더욱더 놀라운 우주적 창조자가 될 수 있다. 그러한 일을 할 수 있는 사람을 우리는 ‘포스트 휴먼(post-human)’이라는 이름으로 부르기도 하고, ‘신인(神人)’이라고 말하기도 하며, 또 다르게 보면 이제 ‘천동설(天動說)’과 ‘지동설(地動說)’의 시간을 보내고 각 사람이 자신 안에 스스로 고유한 우주적 불(各具一太極)을 지니고 스스로가 우주의 중심이 되어서 살아가는 ‘인동설(人動說)’의 시공으로 나아가는 것이라 말해볼 수 있겠다(이은선, 「참된 인류세(Anthropocene) 시대를 위한 이신(李信)의 영(靈)이 신학」, 『李信의 묵시의식과 토착화의 새차원』, 동연 2021, 172쪽 이하).
 
앞의 샤르댕의 언어로 하면 온 우주를 ‘神의 영역(le milieu divine)’으로 확장해 나가는 것이라 할 수 있고, 퇴계 선생의 언어로 하면 “이 땅의 모든 것이 하늘(地上皆天)”이라는 것을 아는 일이라고도 할 수 있겠다. 곧 ‘거룩(聖)의 평범성’을 확대하는 일로서, 그래서 이제 우리에게 관건이 되는 일은 그 목표를 어떤 이념(神)으로 부르는가의 일(神學)보다는 어떻게 그 목표를 여기 지금에서 잘 깨닫고, 느끼고, 믿고, 실행해내느냐의 일인 ‘신학(信學)’의 일이라는 것이다. 이 인간적 언어(人+言)와 믿음의 일(信)에 힘쓰면서 지금까지 우리가 겪었던 트라우마나 시련과 고통의 시간을 넘으며 우리 안의 생명과 사랑의 불을 함께 잘 지펴간다면 오늘의 대멸종 이야기를 우리는 또 다른 우주의 새 창조와 새 생명의 이야기로 꾸며나갈 수 있을 것이다.

The Great Courses



It all began with just a few videotapes—and a brilliant inspiration.

Tom Rollins, the founder of The Great Courses, was a law student at Harvard University and was facing an important exam on the U.S. Federal Rules of Evidence—an exam for which he wasn't prepared.

Dreading the notoriously boring subject but knowing his success depended on understanding the material, Rollins obtained videotapes of 10 lectures by a noted authority on the subject, Professor Irving Younger. Rollins planted himself in front of his television late at night and put the first tape into his VCR. What he discovered changed his life.

I'm so glad this man walks the face of the earth. He is very sweet and empathetic with his patients, and has a wonderful understanding of mental and emotional processes. Sure, the course is long....but you don't need to watch all of it. Just watch the parts that you are interested in. So far I have found most helpful some mantras that he identified to get through difficult times: Peace. Freedom. Courage. Grace. Thank you so much, Dr. Satterfield!

The subtitle to the Great Courses's video series for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is "Techniques for Retraining Your Brain." That sounded so exciting that I checked it out from the library. The instructor, Professor Jason M. Satterfield, is affiliated with UCSF, so comes with great credentials.

The target audience for this course isn't clear. Is it for the person looking to become a therapist? Is it for a patient looking to see which type of therapy suits him or her best? Is it for someone looking to acquire new habits? That's completely unclear. As a result I spent the first couple of episodes kinda confused, but then got into it.

The idea behind cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is that traditional therapy is open-ended, doesn't have any hard end-points, and all too focused on digging deep into the human psyche without providing any relief from the symptoms the patient is suffering from. That's great for producing a continuous stream of revenue from a few patients, but if your goal is to help as many people as possible, it's unsatisfying.

CBT differs from this in having completely different goals:

Specific treatment of symptoms and behaviors that the patient would like to change
Providing tools for the patient to use, so that when he/she leaves therapy, he/she can continue to use those tools to prevent relapse or help himself/herself.
Specific end point in mind. Since the goal is self-sufficiency and self-treatment, once those symptoms are relieved, the patient gets off the therapy, with only occasional checkups.
The tools CBT provide are very secular and focused:
Capture a thought diary, so that triggering situations can be analyzed and dissected at a distance.
Note that thoughts are opinions, and strength of emotion doesn't necessarily mean that the opinions are true.
Attack those opinions using three approaches: (1) experiment with behavioral changes to prove those opinions false (2) stand from a distance to see if you can reinterpret the same events in a different way (3) make a prediction of whether you'll enjoy a new activity, and then re-evaluating that activity after you've done it to show that what you rated as being unenjoyable turned out to be good
Throughout the videos, the course examines 3 patients struggling with different behavioral issues: one of severe shyness, one with managing anger, and one with depression. We watch each of them deal with their problems, run experiments with changing behavior, and reflecting and evaluating the results of their experiments. Throughout the program, the patients are treated with respect, sympathy, and encouraged to solve their problems through a toolbox. There's no hocus-pocus involved. Some of the exercises involved:
Muscle relaxation (progressive relaxation of muscle)
A mindfulness based approach of meditation --- including talking to yourself. This seemed very new-agey to me, but hey, if it works, it works.
Throughout the entire course, Dr. Satterfield provides pointers to further books, studies and results. Don't expect to be super impressed by the numbers. A success rate of 30% in treatment is considered good as far as psychotherapy is concerned. If you think about it, that makes sense. Think about trying to change a habit, like eating less calories so you can lose weight. Lots of people try, but very few manage to do so. Illnesses like depression, a hair-trigger temper, or severe shyness would be even harder.

Nevertheless, it's an interesting no-nonsense approach that I'd never even heard of before. It's well worth checking out, especially if (like me), your former impression of psychotherapy is Freudian mumbo-jumbo.

AMAZING! I have done a lot of reviews of books, videos, courses, etc over the past 30 years. Almost all of them very positive because if they were NOT good, I would not have finished read, watching or participating. The best review of this course would be in the form of a question. When you read/watch something, how often do you look ahead to see how much time is left before it is over? That would signal to me that the material being covered may be somewhat interesting but not interesting enough to hold my attention throughout the presentation. This course WAS NOT ONE OF THOSE TIMES. In fact I don’t remember ever looking ahead to see how much time was left. There were 24 lessons and I was trying to ascertain how I could watch more lessons in less time. My original goal was to watch just one a day. I have been watching 2 and 3 a day, total time for each lesson about 30 minutes. What does that tell you?

Every course has multiple outcomes in regards to what each student takes away from the course and they are rarely the same. This is not about grading the course but rather what each student could benefit by taking the course. In my case, it was multi-layered. As a 33 year real estate broker, I saw definite potential for people in management to learn new interviewing skills – THAT WAS A BIG ONE FOR ME! Even though I am now fully retired, I can see where this course would have helped me tremendously in becoming a better interviewer by asking better questions that would get a person to think more deeply about the subject matter. So for management it would be a definite positive course to take.

Then there was me as an individual. Did I have personal/emotional problems to resolve? Hard to admit this but yes, I had several. I have been athletic for most of my life and was average to better than average in most sporting events I participated in. Then came all the pains, knees, shoulders and I worked through those but then came the back and that affects almost everything I do including doing no activity at all. So this course applied to me in so many ways some of which I immediately recognized because of the course, not because I had thought of them prior to taking the course.

We all have known people who have issues and this course has enlightened me to first recognize that people do have real issues and provided me with better ways for me to both help them and cope with them myself. The lecturer Dr. Satterfield included film clips of real and actual patients that he has interviewed. I found these clips to be mesmerizing and made the lessons fly by.

There were times during the presentations that the Doctor used terms that I was unfamiliar with and at first left me questioning what he was talking about. In almost all cases he later would explain what he meant and in most cases used graphics to further explain. I have no medical training whatsoever other than CPR in the military. This course provides the student when a tremendous overview of so many medical issues, physical, emotional and mental and then how this course and more specifically CBT, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can and probably will help them.

I do not believe that there is a person who cannot benefit, on multiple personal levels, from taking this course. That answers the first question I use to review anything, would I recommend it to others? ABSOLUTELY! Would I give it as a gift to others? Again, ABSOLUTELY!!!! Will I take the course again? Since the individual lessons are targeted to specific issues, I will ABSOLUTELY revisit several of the lessons as they would apply to me.

Dr. Satterfield strikes me as a smart and caring clinician, and I think his clinical vignettes in the course work well. He clearly put a lot of effort into this course, and I suspect that he gets good results as a therapist. I certainly benefitted from going through this course.

However, the course does have two key limitations.

First, the target audience for the course isn’t clear. Sometimes it seems to address individuals who want to help themselves, other times it seems to address clinicians and therapists who want to get a basic understanding of what Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is. Neither audience will get detailed guidance for its needs.

The second limitation is somewhat related to the first. CBT itself, while clearly helpful for many people and many problems, is based on a limited understanding of how the mind works (more precisely, the mind-body). In that sense, CBT can sometimes come across as a bit superficial and not all that different from generic ‘self-help’. If you expect this course to provide eureka insights, you may be disappointed.

But, again, I did benefit from this well-intentioned course, and I’m sure that many others will benefit from it as well, particularly individuals dealing with chronic stress, anxiety, depression, anger, sleep problems, pain, etc. which have reached levels which warrant attention (if these problems are severe, probably best to skip this course and immediately seek professional help).

Here are my notes from the course:

• CBT has roots in ancient philosophy, especially Stoic philosophy.

• CBT sets goals related to well-being, based on an understanding of what can and can’t be changed in terms of cognitions, behaviors, and emotions, and uses methods based on rationality and empirical data in order to achieve those goals. Quantitative assessments are helpful in gauging baseline starting points and progress towards goals. CBT is arguably more pragmatic than theoretical.

• CBT can be done with or without the help of a therapist, and can be combined with other methods. CBT can require considerable effort, can take time to show results, and may require ‘maintenance’ in order to sustain results. The results of CBT correspond to changes in brain images.

• CBT focuses on how particular events trigger automatic and dysfunctional thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and possibly also physiological responses in individuals, and then tries to modify those relationships between triggers and reactions; much of the emphasis is on changing ‘habits of mind’. Third-wave therapy, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), differs from standard CBT by focusing on the process of cognition rather than the content of cognition.

• In general, CBT methods include being resilient, cognitively flexible reappraisal of situations (which may involve looking at the big picture, endowing our experiences with meaning, and viewing adversity as an opportunity to learn and grow), cognitively flexible reappraisal of our ability and resources for coping with situations, taking action to change situations (and accepting when situations can’t be changed), seeking help from others, distracting ourselves, cardiovascular exercise, and relaxation methods such deep slow breathing, guided imagery, and mindful meditation.

• ACT differs somewhat from standard CBT by emphasizing not ruminating and wrestling with seemingly unwanted thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and physiological responses – which may actually exacerbate them – and instead accepting them in a detached way while staying in the present moment (like observing clouds passing in the sky). Mindfulness, including mindful meditation, is a way to achieve this state of being.

• Stress is normal, but elevated chronic stress is abnormal and mentally and physically unhealthy. It can trigger or aggravate many other problems such as anxiety, depression, anger, pain, etc. Work is the biggest source of chronic stress for many people, and taking vacations is one of the best ways to recover from burnout.

• Anxiety disorders (phobias, panic, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, PTSD, etc.) are quite common. A specific CBT method which is often effective in treating anxiety disorders is exposure therapy, in which individuals expose themselves to situations which trigger anxiety until they eventually become desensitized to those situations. By contrast, avoidance of those situations can worsen the associated anxiety, and the anxiety can become generalized to a wider range of triggering situations.

• Depression is also quite common. It often spirals downward into increasingly negative thoughts, emotions, and inactivity. Fortunately, it usually remits on its own within one or two years, but it can recur, and each recurrence makes another one more likely. CBT methods aim to break the downward spiral and reverse it.

• Anger stems from feeling unjustly treated, and tends to pick up steam if not controlled. Specific CBT methods for managing anger including not taking things personally, not magnifying things out of proportion, distracting ourselves, and relaxation.

• Genetic predisposition accounts for about 30% of our health outcomes. That leaves about 70% open to other factors, and CBT methods can improve our health, including our ability to prevent and manage chronic diseases (which affect about half the US population).

• Sleep problems are very common, can be worsened by stress, anxiety, depression, etc., and this interaction can become a vicious cycle. Specific CBT methods for improving sleep include progressive muscular relaxation, guided or unguided imagery, and other relaxation methods. Medications can help with sleep, but the benefit may be limited because they may not restore good sleep architecture. CBT methods are generally more effective than medications for improving sleep.

• Chronic pain is fairly common, especially headaches, back pain, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal pain. Chronic pain and chronic stress can interact in a vicious cycle. Most CBT methods can help with chronic pain, and distraction and relaxation can be particularly helpful.

• In general, social relationships are essential, and online relationships aren’t a substitute for live relationships.

• Having an ‘attitude of gratitude’ has many benefits, including more positive overall emotions (people tend to be happiest in their twenties and sixties), better health, sounder sleep, less anxiety and depression, more kindness towards others, ability to think more broadly and creatively, and greater life satisfaction.

This is basically a college course that could have been taught in 3 lectures extended out to 18. Maybe on average , 3-5 minutes is relevant on each lecture. It does break down Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in terms of examples of how its applied, and amazingly repetitive examples of using it for certain issues : fear, anxiety, etc. But I basically learned nothing new whatsoever about CBT, about why it works and how it re-programs the brain, about specific places where it differs from just asking someone to be self aware and keep a notebook.

Unless you are going to be a psychologist who is using CBT every day and needs very specific pointers for very specific cases that are present in maybe 1 out of each 30 min interval, this audio book has no value.

There are a lot of FREE material mentioned in this book, but when you listen to the audiobook you kinda miss the opportunity to go back and collect them all. Is there a way to have all of them in one page? I have not find it. That's why I think that audiobook alone is not being packaged perfectly. Other than that the material and the session is great.

This is definitely worth the listen. Has some great practical tips on how to actively improve your thinking. From what S.M.A.R.T. goals are and how to set them, to actively working on the weak points we all have in our personalities. I can appreciate the real world examples. I would have like to hear more about using CBT around limiting beliefs outside of a clinical setting because I think there's potential for application in varying aspects of life. I find with listening to books, I need to put it on 2x speed to stay actively engaged. All in all, this was a great introduction to CBT and it's spurred me to pick up more books on it.

This is a compilation of the presentations made at the internationalconference on “Spirituality in Healthcare” held in October 2009 at the SriSathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Whitefield, Bangalore, India.The conference was by invitation and attended by about two hundred health careprofessionals, predominantly medical doctors. Among the prominent delegates were sixty five medical doctors from all over India, serving in the Sai HealthCare mission as Medical Directors/Coordinators in charge of organizing andconducting monthly medical camps primarily in rural and semi urban areas,under the umbrella of the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation and representingvirtually every state in India. The conference primarily targeted such participants who could take back the benefits of participating in this conference and translateit into action. An international flavor was provided mainly by the invited speakersdrawn from world renowned medical institutions such as Duke UniversityMedical Centre, Karolinska Institute, Mayo Clinic and several others.The purpose of the two day conference was to sensitize the medicalfraternity to the role of Spirituality in Healthcare. In this context the conference was rather unique in that, not only was the audience predominantly from themedical fraternity but so were the speakers hailing from various reputed medicalinstitutions from India and abroad, who came to share their knowledge andexperience. Could there have been a better setting or a better spiritual ambiencefor holding such a conference than at Swami’s unique hospital?The conference theme elaborated on the fact that modern medicine has begunto realize that along with technological advances an additional spiritual dimensionis needed in patient care to make the transition from merely curing to total healing.Healing requires addressing the body, mind and spirit. The ground breaking researchdone by Dr. Herbert Benson, Dr. Dean Ornish and several others, and also asdocumented in various ancient scriptures, have clearly established the body, mindand spirit relationship for positive health outcomes. While much work has beendone much more remains to be done. Healthcare is a global concern and hence itis but appropriate that concerted efforts be made to take forward the concept ofspirituality in health care on a global scale to understand and share experiencesarising from geographical and cultural diversities.

This book is like the summary for everything we need to know about our gut, and it is written with such brevity that it feels like a cheat sheet where only the most important information are presented.

The book begins with describing the ideal state: how a healthy gut looks like. Then it takes us step by step through the whole digestive process, starting from the top (our mouth), to the middle (our gut), down to the bottom (our colon). Along the way he explains the many functions of our organs, which makes it easier to understand within the context of the digestive process.

Moreover, while the first few chapters are absolute masterpieces on describing our gut and digestive system, the proceeding chapters dive straight into the practicalities: What certain types of food are made of, what to avoid and what to consume (and why), all the problems and challenges for our gut, and culminating with so many recipes for a good gut flora that takes about 1/3 of the length of the book.

And all of these gems are discussed within the frame of C.A.R.E: Cleanse (remove gut irritants, infections, food sensitivities, and toxins in food) Activate (reactivate healthy digestion by replacing essential nutrients and enzymes) Restore (reintroduce beneficial bacteria for a healthy guy flora) Enhance (repair, regenerate, and heal the intestinal lining).

Now, while there are so many great knowledge that I’ve learned from this book, there are some that stand out more than the others. These are the selected few:

"Between the antibiotics, eating the wrong foods that feed the bad organisms, the toxins you are exposed to in your environment, and the resulting dysbiosis, over a period of days to months you develop a leaky gut. This leakiness or “hyperpermeability” exposes your body to partially digested protein molecules from food. The immune system does not recognize these so it attacks, which results in food sensitivities. You might not even be aware of these sensitivities, which can manifest as hives, allergies, chronic sinus inflammation, and migraines and become the triggers for irritable bowel syndrome and autoimmune disease."

"“Leaky gut” is not a diagnosis but a process, a description of the underlying pathology of numerous diseases that we treat yet have failed to find a cure for. It is a condition in which connections between the cells that line the inside of the intestines (known as tight junctions) become looser, allowing larger molecules (such as partially digested food particles) to pass through the gut wall. Usually, properly digested food is absorbed directly through the cell wall, but in a leaky gut, the pathway between the cells is opened up, exposing the gut-associated immune system to a wide variety of substances our immune cells would otherwise not come into contact with."

"Your immune system is constantly patrolling the gut border for anything it does not recognize in order to prevent an all-out invasion. As the immune system encounters these escaped particles, it attacks. And in individuals with a genetic predisposition to autoimmune diseases, this increased load on the immune system leads to the type of dysregulation that becomes an autoimmune disease. As you are exposed to large protein molecules in a leaky gut from the incompletely digested foods you eat on a daily basis, you develop immune reactions to those foods."

"Often a diet rich in the foods that you are sensitive to, in combination with a leaky or hyperpermeable gut, leads to fluid retention and inflammation and, as a result, weight gain. People who are very food sensitive often lose five to six pounds in the first week after removing these foods from their diet."

"Even when you restrict yourself stringently by following one of the popular diets, including limiting calories or carbs, or monitoring carb-fat-protein ratios, your food sensitivities will make it very difficult to lose weight. When you remove the foods that are “toxic” to your body because they activate your immune response, weight loss happens naturally."

Because if there is one thing that nearly all modern diseases have in common, it is inflammation. And it underlines the importance of this book, since many metabolic diseases, including inflammation, begin in the gut.

I did not identify with some parts of the book, as I have no overt ailments - gastro or otherwise. But I figured, if it helps those that do, it should be good for me. I ask, "If it makes someone with ailments healthier, how healthy would it make me?" I like to experiment. How will I feel after 30 days on this plan?

I'm 20 days in, and have lost the only 10+ pounds I had to lose (most of that in the first 6 days). I've heard that the last 10 is the hardest to lose, and that's all I had, and it came off quick.

OK, I'm just gonna say it - my poops are amazing. Nice clean sinkers, usually one safety wipe, and done. This is the most drastic difference I see, not having any overt ailments , allergies, or food sensitivities at all. At 50+ years old, it does seem that I recover a bit quicker from my jogs, and am slowly adding weekly mileage - it seems a bit easier than last year - not sure if this is due to the 10+ lb. loss, or perhaps less post-run joint swelling. Both?
Oh, the other dramatic difference is how I approach eating, and food, and hunger. I have been a junk food junkie all my life - potato chips are (were) like crack. Pie/cake/cookies? YES. But having quit the subtly addictive foods listed in the book, I no longer crave them. and I just don't NEED to eat as much. I don't feel like I've had to use a whole lot of "will power" to do this. Just decide, then do.

To ramp up and start, you probably need 2 weeks (if quick study, highly motivated), perhaps 4 weeks if you work full time, have other responsibilities - to read the book, start sourcing the stuff - I use local health food stores (Whole Foods, etc) and iHerb.com to buy everything. I have routine down now to premix most of the smoothie stuff on Sunday, for the next 2 weeks, and so it only takes around 10 minutes each morning to make.
If you're fairly healthy but just want to improve, this is great. If you have ailments, I can only imagine how much better you'd feel on this diet. The approach used to then determine exactly what your particular body needs after the first 30 days is spot on, very methodical and scientific.

I was never overweight (in fact I’ve always been very lean), athletic training, no junk food – but had severe digestive issues for 6 years and developed an autoimmune condition for the last 2 of those years. I live in New York City, had access to great doctors, but all the “traditional” doctors, as well meaning as they were, determined that it was stress. A friend of mine who is in the nutrition field suggested that it might be the food I was eating - but I protested because I ate “healthy” - whole wheat pasta and bread, salads for takeout with low fat everything – Ha! I saw Dr. Pedre on Good Morning America and was curious so I purchased the book which advocates a Paleo type diet – no wheat, grains, lots of healthy fats, grass fed beef, organic as much as possible and absolutely no processed foods. In 4 weeks my digestive issues disappeared by about 90% and my autoimmune condition improved by about 40%. As a result of reading the book, I decided to see Dr. Pedre and do further testing. The results were clear – Candida overgrowth. I have now been on an antifungal, probiotic and enzyme prescribed by Dr. Pedre – all very inexpensive – and yes, you can get the supplements anywhere, not just from his website. (FYI - The reason that I do use his website is because the products are guaranteed fresh. Too many times I have purchased through various online sites and have had issues with freshness for supplements.) My autoimmune condition is about 80% better and digestive issues are just about completely gone. We are aiming for full autoimmune remission. All this started from reading the book – believe me – it’s real.

Yes – it is more expensive to buy organic food and grass fed beef, but it was more expensive for me to take the medications I was given along with all the doctors visits and tests that I had gone through for 6 years – and it didn’t make me feel any better. Our processed food chain is poisoning people. And no – it’s not hard to follow the diet in the book. First of all it’s not a diet because I eat a lot – rather it’s getting back to nutrient dense, healthy food. I am a partner in a business and work many hours but you make time to cook properly and pick the quicker meals – how long does it take to broil an organic chicken breast (with the skin) and defrost organic vegetables and make a sweet potato. Nuts and fruit for snacks – not a big deal in terms of time.

I would strongly suggest that you read the book – it can change your life. Functional medicine is where the future is. It isn’t voodoo, but good science from a medical doctor associated with one of the best hospitals in New York City who understands that we are what we eat.
