3 new Japanese films coming to Netflix this August
Japanese movies to watch when you’re not glued to the Tokyo Olympic Games
Written by Emma SteenThursday 29 July 2021
With all of the excitement we’ve seen so far in the Tokyo Olympics, it can be hard to turn your attention away from the live-stream events for fear of missing a historical victory in real time. That said, a little variety never hurts. If you’re looking for a change of pace, Netflix has a fresh lineup of titles coming out this August to keep you entertained as you shield away from the summer heat.
July brought the unmissable Naomi Osaka documentary, which showed us a never-before-seen intimate side of the tennis superstar. This month’s selection is just as eclectic, with a tragicomedy about a group of idol fanboys, as well as a poignant anime set in World War II Hiroshima. Here are the three films to look forward to as we enter a new month. (Note that regional restrictions may apply.)
In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World
Synopsis: In the middle of the Second World War, 18-year-old Suzu moves from the seaside town of Eba in Hiroshima to the port city of Kure after she is married off to a military officer called Shusaku Hojo. Suzu likes her new family, but with the situation of the war growing more dire by the day, staying afloat in her new life proves to be a challenge.
Overview: An extended version of the 2016 film ‘In This Corner of the World’, this 2019 release is the longest animated film of its kind. Though the main characters aren’t based on real people, the story depicts a sobering account of the struggles people in Hiroshima faced in the midst of World War II.
Available August 1
In Those Days
Synopsis: Mikito has dreams of making it in a band, but with few career prospects and a failed attempt at getting accepted into university, he finds himself in a slump. To cheer him up, a friend introduces Mikito to the music of idol star Aya Matsuura. Mikito is instantly hooked and finds new meaning in life as a groupie amongst Aya’s top fanboys.
The group enjoy bonding over their shared admiration for their favourite idol and even end up forming their own band. Years later, the band members have drifted apart after turning their attention to more important aspects of their lives. They are brought back together when one member of the group is diagnosed with a serious illness.
Overview: There’s a little bit of everything in this bittersweet comedy about a fan group whose lives revolve around obsessing over their favourite idol. On one hand, the film gives some interesting insight into Japan’s booming idol industry and its hardcore fans. On the other hand, it follows the emotional journey of a group of friends who are united by one common interest, and how things play out when life starts to get in the way.
Available August 19
Fortuna’s Eye
Synopsis: Shinichiro is cursed with an unfortunate gift – the ability to know if someone near him is about to die. The power applies to anyone in Shinichiro’s sight, as the people whose lives are being cut short appear transparent. Having lost both his parents at an early age, Shinichiro lives a lonely, unhappy life with tragedy following him everywhere he goes. When he meets an upbeat young woman called Aoi, Shinichiro finds himself looking at the world in a new light. That is until one day when Shinichiro realises Aoi’s body has become transparent.
Overview: Based on a novel of the same name by Naoki Hyakuta, ‘Fortuna’s Eye’ is a doomed love story that begs one question: If you knew what was going to happen in the future, would it change the way you choose to live now?

A great read for even people before they reach 50 because we all can benefit in looking forward and to considering the quality of our lives in later years as well as our elders in our lives. This definitely makes us think about the rich meaning of life we can have and what we can do for others and acknowledge our elders who mean so much to us. A great read aloud to share and discuss and enjoy!

A clear-eyed and enlightening book for people of any age on an issue of growing importance in our world. Christoph Arnold shares the stories of others who are “rich in years” as well as those who love and care for them, reminding us of the importance of faith, hope and community. Thanks to Christoph and his wife Verena who compiled this book, we can see how facing the fears of death, the changing of one’s body and mind, the loss of capacities and loved ones can be transformed if we share them. Looking through their eyes and hearts, we can begin to celebrate our journey towards our later years. Growing old need not be a problem. We can learn by their example and transform ageing to a journey of discovery and be a blessing to those we gather around us. Read, enjoy and put their message to use today. You might even feel younger!

Synopsis
Spiritual discernment is the traditional name for listening and responding to divine guidance. In this book you will approach decision making as an active participant, a co-creator with God in shaping your life. Drawing on twenty-five years of experience as a psychologist and fifteen years as a spiritual director, Nancy Bieber presents three essential aspects of Spirit-led decision making:
- Willingness – being open to God’s wisdom and love;
- Attentiveness – noticing what is true, discerning the right path;
- Responsiveness – taking steps forward as the way becomes clear.
With gentle encouragement, Bieber shows how to weave these themes together to discover the best path for you.
Each chapter is enriched by practical spiritual exercises to help you understand yourself and your specific situation, as well as to strengthen spiritual discernment as a daily way of life. An appendix includes a detailed guide for using the book in group study.

We are all faced with life decisions. We all have seasons in our life that we do not like. How we respond to those life situations is critical. We can focus on the discontent, the losses, hardship and cower to our fears or we can focus on the new situation, the new life, the new season and face the fears. The author uses metaphors and word pictures to help the reader grow deeper spiritually and to convey direction in life situations. She divides this book into three sections: willingness, attentiveness and responsiveness. Bieber takes these three words and weaves them into a spiritual journey of life. At the end of each chapter, there is a reflection section that gives the reader an opportunity to respond. These reflection sections really make the book as the reader is faced with being introspective, to breath, to rest, to embrace and to be aware, as one takes time to listen to his or her body as an important spiritual practice that can help ignite or discover one’s passions. Bieber also has a group format at the end of the book which can be used to discuss this book or the format can be used to dialogue about other books, too. This book offers a different perspective on life and God.

I have spent over thirty years in pastoral ministry. I also enjoy being with young adults, in the midst of career, faith, partner, and where to live decisions. Decision making, seeking God's guidance, listening to God's voice are all topics I have taught many times. Nancy Bieber shares wisdom that is helpful for any one of any age. I found her text and practices helpful, and very close to what has become my own teaching and practice. I could not read this book quickly, as there was a lot to contemplate. I used the exercises at the end of each chapter. I am especially enjoying being more mindful, as she names it. Although I am not in the middle of any major decision making in my own life, I would definitely recommend this to others.
I enjoyed her clear language, the many practical stories, and the visual images that were painted.
If you want an overtly Christian book on guidance, this is not the book, as the author preferred to remain open to a variety of faith practices. However, the spiritual practices are clearly Biblical, and if the book was shared with a group, Bible stories could be added to the lessons.

Shelves: spirituality, spiritual, self, religious, philosophy, mysticism
This is a very rich book of helpful insights into the world of mysticism, or for the lay person, the world of prayer and devotional reading. I have researched and been through most of these practices before, so knew of some of the techniques Loring discusses:
lectio divina,
contemplative prayer/listening,
journal writing as devotional practice, etc.
Loring's incredibly readable style helps make this book a very good resource for those wishing to go deeper into any spiritual practice they have taken upon themselves. (less)
