Brilliant. Have two hard copies to share, and have just downloaded Kindle version. One of the best books on very high levels of Enlightenment and genuine Mysticism. Dr David Hawkins manages to be profound, yet down-to-earth, full of humour and inspirational. Perhaps best for those well along the pathway.

David Hawkins does it again! Just when I thought he couldn't do much better than the first 2 books of this trilogy, I read this final book and I am blown away more than ever. This book actually calibrates the highest of all in the trilogy at 999.8 on a 1 to 1000 scale. This makes it the most powerful on a Truth level if we are to fully trust the Scale of Consciousness calibration he developed to gauge truth from falsehood, a discernment the human intellect is incapable of doing on his own. Hawkins claims that just being exposed to this material will raise one's consciousness, a claim I can attest to. Although I had some resistance and residual skepticism when he describes WalMart corporation calibrating in the 300's, something I was astonished and amazed to learn in light of their sheningigans, I must admit I can not deny the power of his words and message. I spent more time reading and absorbing this last book simply because it was so potent. Reading this book written by a Self Realized psychiatrist may be the most important step you take if enlightenment is your goal. Why? Because this author understands the human ego thoroughly from a uniquely Western perspective and has the uncanny ability to dissect it so we are able to examine the mechanisms and machinery that allows the human ego to survive and in many cases to thrive in the midst of our ignorance regarding its karmic workings. Fully understanding HOW the ego works is the 1st step to undoing it. Hawkins understands this! He imparts a knowledge and insight that I find both refreshing and enlightening in the classics of spiritual teachings. For instance, he makes the very important distinction between crushing and killing the ego often emphasized in Eastern teachings and replaces this jargon with simply gently withdrawing attention from the ego and surrendering its function (ie thinking and mentations) to one's Higher Power thus depriving it of sustenance until it eventually starves from inattention. This is the ultimate diet! It is the true meaning of austerities and tapas. Once we no longer longer give the ego power, it ceases to exist. Thus the endless battle between the lower and higher natures is avoided, and the duality trap consisting of power struggles is circumvented. Endless battling with an ego, which has no inherent, independent existence in Reality, actually often gives rise to a new "spiritual ego" and perpetuates the individual being bound to the wheel of karma. Although the ego can be very clever, it is also very stupid as Hawkins points out! Hawkins also outlines and delineates the spiritual path we all must tread eventually, if we are ever to reach the final goal of enlightenment. In the end, as he mentions, the final step is taken by the Holy Spirit through an Act of Grace. This is the moment when the ego implodes or evaporates into emptiness like the candle flame that is extinguished. This is the actual meaning of the word,"nirvana". Hawkins writes from the perspective of a Western gnani yoga master and understands the strengths and weaknesses of language. Truth can NOT be languaged as it is beyond mind, beyond the linear. In some mysterious, matter-of-fact way, Hawkins is able to discuss enlightenment and spirituality not so much in religious jargon, but in a psychospiritual analytic manner that imprints one's consciousness with the Truth, both using and bypassing the rational, linear human intellect and thereby penetrating to the depths of one's own Soul. He calls it a "carrier wave". Indeed, I call it the Power of the Holy Spirit or Grace.

I consider these 3 volumes and particularly this final chapter in of his Trilogy, perhaps some of the most transformational spiritual writings I have come across. Although they are exceptionally suited to students of Advaita and the path of nonduality, they can be appreciated by most sincere Truth students across the spectrum because of Hawkins unique perspective of presenting Truth uncloaked in mysticism and pseudoreligious pretentionous or head trips. This is naked Truth, spoken in a language as familiar to the Soul or Self as to mind. It calls us within, back Home, to the Truth that we have always been and are in Reality and Essence. Welcome Home! And thank you, David Hawkins, for the Gift of Remembrance through the Grace of the Holy Spirit. "Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha."

5.0 out of 5 stars It is the standard by which I compare my own state of developmentReviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 28 November 2009

The first time I read this book, maybe a percent or less of it actually sunk in. But something within me kept drawing me towards it again and again. Now, after two years of repeated passes, as well as repeated passes of everything else he has written, I wouldn't dream of putting it down. Sometimes I feel the urge to look up something specific in the book, but usually, when I have a few moments, I'll just open up to a random page and start reading, and I always carry something away every time. Something within me is telling me that this is the highest possible truth, in written form. And, accordingly, I "gauge" my own state of development, spiritual evolution, or whatever you want to call it, by how much I read in the pages actually makes sense to me, and what doesn't make sense to me yet, and there is plenty, is merely an indication of the work that remains to be done.
I don't really know who to recommend this book to, as I don't know anyone who is interested in things of this nature, but I can share my own experience with it. For most of my adult life, and a considerable portion of my childhood (where does one really draw the line) I have bounced around religious scrupulosity, to agnosticism, to full blown athiesm, material reductionism, ad infinitum. I have had much difficulty accepting the truths that were presented to me in the church, especially the favored status of one religion over the other. I used to say that there are ten thousand religions out there, and every last one of them think they are the only ones going to heaven...which one is right?
Of course, by that line if reason, it is easy for a physics major to conclude that there is only physical reality and they are all delusional. But I never could accept that completely.
One thing that I can definitely say that I have picked up from this book is that the god that I was rejecting was indeed worthy of rejection. The god that I was rejecting, which I believed was merely a creation of the collective imagination of the church, was, indeed just that to a large extent. Rather than searching for my own answers to the Nature of God, I was creating a mental construct based on what I had been told by other people. Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with what I was being told. Therein lies the crux: It was the simple idea that I was trying to create my own subjective experience of God, based on the experience of other well intentioned people. It is the simple fact that my subjective experience of the nature of God did not come from within, which completely flies in the face of SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE. Hawkins says repeatedly in the book, that the discovery of the presence of God is profoundly SUBJECTIVE. You can't be told about it by someone else. It can't be accessed via the intellect, and its associated cause and effect paradigm.
If your experience matches mine to some degree, then I highly recommend this book to you, and absolutely anything else by the same author.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best resources for spiritual theory and practice, but beware the flawed "muscle-tested calibrations"Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 13 October 2015
Verified Purchase
The main benefit of learning from David Hawkins is that he has the broad spectrum of life experience ranging from a classical education including knowledge of the major Western schools of philosophy, and Christian theology, to being accomplished in the scientific world as a psychiatrist, to being involved in alternative medicine (homeopathy) and New Age belief systems, to being converted from atheism due to an overwhelming spiritual experience that led him to remove himself from public life for many years. He synthesizes Western thought with Eastern, science with religion and spirituality, and subjective experience with objective learning. Nobody else that I know of brings that much to the table, and you'll take a lot away from his books due to his sheer intelligence and breadth of knowledge on the subject of spirituality.

What Hawkins does is locate the underlying truth common to all religions and spiritual traditions, and presents that truth to you about as clearly and straightforwardly as possible, in a clinical manner. He then gives you step by step instructions on how to apply that knowledge in order to become a more spiritual person. His teachings are very detailed in this regard, and he addresses just about every possible question you could have, maybe not all in this book, but somewhere in his library. His books are applicable to anyone with even the slightest interest in the subject.

To cut to the point, Hawkins has a major flaw and that is his system of calibrating what he calls the "levels of consciousness" which is a scale from 1 to 1000, denoting the lowest form of consciousness to the highest. He bases everything around this, and you must take his numbers for things with a grain of salt because they all come exclusively from him and his wife. He even says himself that a person's intentions can change the calibration. So, say you want to know if a particular controversial political figure tests below 200 (non-integrity, falsehood) or somewhere above. You could get a different number based on your mood. A different person could get a different number than you. What this does, is places all of the authority for these numbers on Hawkins himself. This is obviously a huge caveat, and you'd have to be a fool to take him based on faith.

Whether Hawkins was enlightened or not - let's assume he was - he was still a man with his own biases. He claimed he was beyond that, but that would mean he is infallible and of course that cannot possibly be true. He uses Jesus and Buddha, among others, as examples of spiritual teachers who calibrated at 1000. Fair enough. However, he claims that this very book calibrates at a level of 999.8 - higher than every single piece of holy scripture in human history, according to his numbers, including those containing the teachings of Jesus and the Buddha.

I don't think so. This is a fine book, and David Hawkins is a fine teacher, one of the best by my reckoning. But is still just a man, and this is still just a book. Apply the practices he teaches, seek the subjective experience of God as he describes, and decide for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece if you are a serious spiritual studentReviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 3 October 2010

I: Reality and Subjectivity is a brilliant piece of work that every serious spiritual student wants to read and study extensively.

However, the author writes in the CAVEAT "The traditional religionist or the spiritually timid are forewarned that the material presented herein may be disturbing and therefore better bypassed. The teachings are presented for the seriously committed spiritual student who is seeking God as Enlightenment.
The pathway to Enlightenment via radical truth is demanding and requires the surrendering of all beliefs systems. Only then does the Ultimate reality reveal itself as the sought after-"I" of the Supreme.
The material presented herein is from the perspective of the infinite "I" of the Self.

The above CAVEAT explains the one star ratings from so many with such strong political postionalities and contextual distortions of the authors writings. Dr Hawkins writes on the back cover "Conflict is resolved within the mind of the student by means of recontextualization, which solves the dilemma. Argument and adversity are resolvable by identifying the postionalities of the ego which are the basis of human suffering" The above quote has held true for me when I have followed his teachings there by changing my reaction to the world which has a direct impact on the way the world reacts to me. Dr. Hawkins explains with hundreds of Questions and Answers what the spiritual student wants to do in order to reach higher levels of Consciousness and to reduced personal human suffering. When I apply his teachings to my life it improves.

In my experience it is critical that you read "Power vs. Force" followed by "Eye of the I" before you take on this work. This is a very advanced spiritual book that a person must be ready for. I couldn't read it for over a year. When I finally did to say this is a masterpiece of spiritual wisdom is an understatement. It is not a book you just read but, one that you study for a lifetime. Five stars don't do it justice.

I am the author of "The Holy Order of Water," and other writings. And, am a life long seeker of truth and knowledge. Besides traveling the globe and meeting profound teachers, I have also deeply explored the "inner" journey.

On this basis, I feel that anyone who takes the time to read "I" will learn something useful. In fact, this is a book that you can read over and over again during different stages of your personal evolution, and see and learn new things about yourself and the world without and within you.

For instance, on page 89, Hawkins tells us, "Because of the rarity of the enlightened state, each religion then presumed that its originator and founder was 'the only one'....In addition to these difficulties, the ego/mind is unable to discern truth from falsehood and thereby has no absolute means to confirm the authentic from the false. To add to the difficulty, not only was the state of enlightenment extremely rare, but when it did occur, the majority who experienced it disappeared from society or, if they did not, their enlgihtened state was not recognized or comprehended."

Besides "enlightenment," Hawkins also explores issues such as "fear," and how it creates illness. Fear is also something that the media and people in certain positions use to manipulate and "cash in" on those who cannot "see" through slanted information containing selfish intent.

When it comes to our reality, we learn that, "The Unmanifest is not subject to the laws of the Manifest. On the contrary, the Manifest unfolds according to the infinite potential of the Unmanifest, which one might call the Laws of Creation." This truth is so obvious - that it is often overlooked by the ego/hubris of many scientists and leaders. This entire reaity is the manifestation of a universal intelligence. An intelligence that has given birth to each one of us.

In the final analysis, each one of us is ultimately responsible for the evolution of our own soul. This book is a helpful guide for those seeking a higher level of consciousness, and perhaps willing to make the sacrifice of helping life on Earth in the process.

Not an easy read, specially if english is not your first language...

A dept we don't find anywhere else, The Topic of the construction of the ego and the functionning of human consciousness at different level is something we don't find often. Mostly because people have an understandable tendency to talk and write for their own limited perspective and not from a global understanding if things. David Hawkins is able to help us acces and grasp a little more, every level of consciousness.

His book ''Letting Go'', the latest one. Is much more accessible to general population for it help understand in simple words the emotional mechanism at the more familiar levels. It is definetly a great book for transformation of our daily life.
I would suggest using ''Letting go'' first, unless you are already really engaged actively on a very dedicated path of self-realization.

But if your are looking for a glimpse at higher levels of functionning of the consciousness, ''I Reality or Subjectivity'' is a gem.
Most of his book I already have read twice. But there is such a dept in his book, I am pretty shure I might ended up reading it ten times. That is, by definition a very precious book to me.

If there is any way to thank this man for is personal and global contribution of our evolution, I am not sure I could find the words to express my gratitude...

Having read a couple of Dr Hawkins books, (Letting Go and Healing & Recovery) neither of the two that made up a trilogy (of which this was the final one and not something I realised) I wasn't sure I was going to be able to completely absorb it in the way intended. If this had been my first Dr Hawkins book then that may have been the case. However, on reading it I couldn't help but keep stopping to share it with my husband. There are some sections that really hit home. Dr Hawkins calibrated each of the chapters and they all calibrated extremely high points on the Map of Consciousness. Have a pencil handy because you're probably going to want to mark sections. I'm sure the official description of this book is sufficient to describe the contents, but be sure this is a book that will get more than one reading (as all his books have for me so far). Not because they're hard to understand but because I want to make sure I absorb it correctly. I'm amazed how easy it is to "surrender" one's negative thoughts and feelings to God and have them stop - just like that! I'm not someone who was comfortable evening uttering the word 'God' but Dr Hawkins makes it easy to really understand and take on board the essence of God. We really are so lucky to have his writings. Bless him wherever he finds him Self.

"Hah!" This book transforms the way one views reality. Of the hundreds of religious and spiritual texts that I have read over the past 15 years, this one has influenced me in the most profound ways. My copy of the book is dog-eared and full of highlighted text. Presence, peace, knowingness -- if one could put it into words, these are some of the gifts that this book offers. I am overcome with gratitude. Read this book and you will be richly blessed. Shadows cease to exist in the presence of the all pervading Light.

This is another ”enlightening” book by David Hawkins. It is the third of a trilogy, the previous books being “Power versus Force” and “Eye of the I”. It is divided into five sections, respectively entitled The Process, The Realization of Divinity, The Obstacles, The Transcendence and The Recontextualization.

The book is intended to help the “linear mind” understand the “nonlinear reality” of spiritual truth.

It too includes continual references to the Map of the Scale of Consciousness, which runs from 0-1000, 0 being death and 1000 being the level of the Christ, Buddha and Krishna.

As always, the best bit for me was the section, in this book the Introduction, which comprises a précis of the author’s life. This précis includes descriptions of the states of awareness the author has experienced. Reading about these brings me myself into higher states as I’ve described in previous reviews of Hawkins’ books.

Most of the book is presented as the author’s answers to questions posed by his students. In this way he explains things that many of us might have been inclined to ask him about.

We are informed that cults calibrate below 200. They “appeal to the innocent, the gullible, and the spiritually naïve or ignorant”.

Pope John II at the time of calibration tested at 590, the level of “extremely high Unconditional Love”. However, various political and authoritarian positions regarding church matters may calibrate well below 500 (the level of Love). H. states that the position of the Catholic Church on “clerical pedophilia” calibrates at 165 (200 being the level of Truth), whereas current Catholicism itself calibrates at 510.

The mystics of the world’s great religions calibrate higher than the religions themselves and are generally in accord with each other. He defines the mystic as one who has bypassed the mind in order to realize the pure truth.

H. states that great leaps of consciousness result from surrendering oneself to God at great depth. Long periods of agony can lead to transcendence of many levels of consciousness. The author himself experienced a leap from a hell-like state to a state with no personal “I” but only an “Infinite Presence of unlimited power”.

We are advised about two methods of focus that could be used in both contemplation and meditation. The one is to be aware of the totality of one’s surroundings with no focus on anything in particular, and the other is to “fixate on the central focus of vision so as to be one-hundred-percent focused on the current intended action”.

Spiritual advancement may be made by by-passing all information and merely doing the spiritual practices described. All that is required is “blind faith, the truth of a teaching, … the integrity of the teacher, plus dedication and adherence to a simple practice”.

One can carry out both the pathway of the heart and the way of the mind simultaneously. In the pathway of the heart we make the decision to be unconditionally loving to all that is encountered, even such things a garbage can.

This, like the others in the trilogy, is an amazing book and provides invaluable spiritual information. It answers most of our spiritual questions and illuminates many aspects of spirituality that we may not have been aware of.

I strongly recommend that you read this final volume too. Reading the book will allegedly raise your consciousness between ten and forty points. The book itself was calibrated as having a level of 999.8, with two chapters calibrating at 1000.

I can only review this book through a poem. Here it goes...

Sitting on the edge of the formless and formed,
Peering into each and expressing it through language,
That is the true power of Hawkins.
Standing on the line between the Divine and Illusionary,
Gazing into each and elucidating it through prose,
That is the true love of Hawkins.
And while sitting and standing he was neither sitting or standing,
To be the infinite and to be nothing,
That is what Hawkins realized and explained,
That is what You are.

Amazing read beyond words.

As a former atheist, these books surprised me with a hope for another way of being. Not through devotion to some arbitrary priesthood offering to guide me towards a transcendent godhead, but via living with a shifted focus on inner life instead of outer life or, worse, on the meaninglessness of either.

I haven't read any of these books in over a decade and so am not sure if they'd still open my eyes and inspire me to grow and change the same way. Even if not, they served their purpose as further fuel for the fires of growth and self-improvement that dominated my late twenties.

"Power Vs. Force" supplies the measuring stick, "The Eye Of The I" soothes the spirtual questions, and "I" does the cleanup. Simple as that.

This is the fifth book that I read by David Hawkins, and like the rest, it didn't disappoint. Cannot wait to start the next one, it really puts things in perspective. They seem like they are the easiest things to do, but not to judge people or situations.. I find it the hardest thing! Either way, hope is not lost.

I'm a big fan of Hawkins, he has a take on spiritual matters which is breathtaking in its clarity. That said, this is not (in my view) his best work.

We all understand the fundamental dichotomies inherent in spiritual thinking, which makes for an alluring oxymoron. Descartes got us all into a bad way of thinking with his 'I think therefore I am', which came about because of all 'reality' there could only be one certainty: human thought. We cannot know for sure that we interpret reality correctly, but we do know that we think on it. Thus thought is the ultimate litmus test for self-awareness. Hawkins turns this (quite rightly) on its head, because all thought is subjective, self-referential and therefore ego-centric. The ego is not reality, but rather the barrier to it. All Zen masters, and indeed meditators of any skill whatsoever will concur that reality is found in the condition of 'no-mind'. That rare, beautiful and fleeting state in between thought.

So I agree with Hawkins almost without reservation, I just didn't think this book was especially clear, or even especially helpful. It's too academic and has a strange museum-like quality to the writing; like reading Thucydides, which is manageable because his histories are so epic. That style doesn't translate well to spiritual writing in my view.

But still some interesting and important insights, just not easily expressed.

....May have update once completed, but suffice it to say, this author's work is a complex mixture of physics, spirituality, psychology, and life! Written in easy-to-read (sort of) Q & A format. Content will stretch anyones dendrites and nuronets in their brain, guaranteed! Fascinating.

Qualitative and Quantitative analysis and calibration of the level of human consciousness.

And now…two e-books: Secrets of David R. Hawkins: Map of Consciousness and Secrets of David R. Hawkins: Hawkins Applied Kinesiology, the first showing how [Hawkins] and Lester [Levenson] got the Map of Con from — Oh No! — none other than L Ron Hubbard…and the second showing the Hawk is too far out even for the International College of Applied Kinesiology, and exposing some cult tendencies. ~Sarlo’s Guru Rating Service

*Top 5 Falsehoods and Truths*
NOVEMBER 24, 2014
1.

Falsehood: Hawkins Applied Kinesiology (a.k.a. kinesiology, k-testing, consciousness research, etc.) — muscle testing for truth — works.

Truth: The International College of Applied Kinesiology, its current and past two presidents, Dr. John Diamond, many devoted Hawkins students, as well as scientists, all know that it does not work.

2.

Falsehood: The Map of Consciousness is a discovery that represents a new paradigm.

Truth: The map derives from L. Ron Hubbard → Lester Levenson → David R. Hawkins. It is plagiarized.

3.

Falsehood: Mother Teresa, Sam Walton, and Lee Iacocca endorsed Power vs. Force.

Truth: As discovered by Hawkins’ biographer, Scott Jeffrey, and detailed in Power vs. Truth, they did not. The Mother Teresa of Calcutta Center agrees that Mother Teresa did not endorse Dr. Hawkins’ work. Hay House continues to use an altered quotation of hers to sell Hawkins’ books.

4.

Falsehood: Scientific American and The New Yorker endorsed Power vs. Force.

Truth: Following Mr. Jeffrey’s revelations, Hay House and Veritas Publishing (Dr. Hawkins’ self-publishing company in Sedona, Arizona reportedly operated by Mrs. Susan Hawkins) now assert that the precise quotations initially attributed to Sam Walton and Mother Teresa instead come from these publications. However, they do not offer endorsements as such, as confirmed by a writer for Scientific American.

5.

Falsehood: Hawkins established worldwide study groups.

Truth: The majority of these study groups are in the United States, followed by some in Canada, Australia, and several other countries. According to our sources, a number of these groups have only one member, several have disbanded, and most seem to have but a handful each. Apparently Dr. Hawkins did not establish them.

The “Force” of Veritas Publishing

NOVEMBER 23, 2014
David R. Hawkins’ book, Power vs. Force (1995), was initially considered by many readers to be supporting peace over such actions as litigation. (Numerous people assumed that Dr. Hawkins was opposed to war, for example, though he later supported the preemptive invasion of Iraq.) Veritas Publishing, Hawkins’ self-publishing company in Sedona, Arizona, did not live up to this ideal, however. The New England Institute of Religious Research and Wikipedia were both threatened with a lawsuit if they did not remove from their respective websites factual information regarding Hawkins. Both nonprofit organizations, they chose to remove the content rather than pay to defend themselves. Hawkins’ biographer, Scott Jeffrey, has described what went on behind the scenes!

Less well known is that Veritas Publishing has threatened a number of websites with legal action if they did not remove their respective postings of the Map of Consciousness. (Veritas charges $6 for the plagiarized — from Hubbard through Levenson — work, so apparently they do not appreciate it being offered for free.)

Following are a few examples.

Shark Free Waters — A conscious approach to transformation in law: “Doctor David Hawkin’s Map of Consciousness”

IMAGE REMOVED – (after receiving the most aggressive legal request of my life! …)

“WHY YOU ARE NOT SEEING THE MAP OF CONSCIOUSNESS, ETC.,  HERE”

Hoo boy! If I thought the lawyer letter was not nice, this next one was not nice x 10…From what I hear, [Hawkins] is creating many enemies with his heavy handed tactics that threaten and use force — and demonstrate no knowledge of power.

Personal Excellence: “Map of Consciousness”

Update Feb 7, 2012: Unfortunately, Veritas Publishing demanded that I remove the image and I’ve since taken it off PE. For an organization that tries to preach the concept of Power vs. Force, it surprises me they would resort to forceful threats and solutions (rather than actions that resonate with the “power” levels of consciousness) to achieve their aim. I would have easily removed it if they had simply asked, vs. issuing a e-mail with threats of lawsuits and some pretty heavy and angst-filled words…

Keep in mind that these are people who were intending to promote Dr. Hawkins’ work! Further, the first example is from a lawyer, who desires consciousness in the practice of law, and states that the letter she received was the worst she’s ever seen. She apparently demonstrates more integrity and spirituality than Veritas, though, by forgiving them and desiring to work with them in the future!

For numerous other examples, search “Veritas Publishing” or “David Hawkins” at Chilling Effects to see their repeated DMCA complaints to Google, intended to remove information from the internet.

We predict that Chris Dierkes‘ excellent article, “Against High Vibrations: A Critique of New Age Spirituality,” may be one of the next targets on Veritas’ list, since it includes a picture of the Map of Consciousness:

[Hawkins’ dualistic] scale…ends up causing a lot [of] well-meaning but naive spiritual seekers extraordinary amounts of unnecessary suffering…[I]t’s actually not good to only have sunny days. “It’s always a sunny day over there“ was not a compliment. It was a very important insight and a kind of warning.

Indeed. William James has made similar observations. In the nondualistic, balanced, and healthful words of Buddhist sage Nagarjuna, “Samsara and Nirvana are one.” It is the duality which seems to create the suffering. Enlightenment is beyond suffering but is non-separate from it. The lotus flower grows in, and is non-separate from, the mud. All is One. This is a deep insight into the nature of Reality, which Hawkins’ work may seemingly obscure from our immediate sight.

To lighten the mood after seeing so much “FORCE“ from Veritas Publishing, which is reportedly operated by Mrs. Susan Hawkins, following is an instance of another Hay House personal development author, Steve Pavlina, who initially endorsed Hawkins’ Map and work (in 2005) but later changed his mind (by 2011). Pavlina’s “New and Improved Map of Conscious Growth” ranges from the lowest level of consciousness (“Complete idiots”) to the highest level of enlightenment (“Canadians”). Pavlina muses

Have you noticed that each time someone creates a linear map of consciousness (i.e. a series of defined tiers that you can progress through), they almost always put themselves on the 2nd or 3rd rung from the top, with the top tier being the idealized version of their values?…There is no universal, tiered, linear map of conscious growth. There is simply expansion, with no direction being more or less enlightened than any other.

Hawkins placed some of his own work, I: Reality and Subjectivity, at 999.8 on a scale of 1,000. 1,000 is the level of Jesus Christ, the Buddha, and Krishna, among but a few others. Many of Hawkins’ students call him “Lord,” and refer to his teachings as “His” teachings. Some claim that he is the Second Coming of Christ. Indeed, “Gloria in excelsis Deo!” — the dedication found at the beginning of each of Dr. Hawkins’ books — are the words the angels sang when they welcomed Christ into the world: “Glory to God in the highest” (Luke 2:14). Perhaps Hawkins was hinting at something? We are unsure. But, some followers are convinced he is the “real deal.” And not just the real deal in some sort of Adyashanti or Eckhart Tolle (insert here your favorite contemporary spiritual teacher) way, but rather on the rarefied level of the Avatar, such as Jesus.

Based on Dr. Hawkins’ personal Hawkins Applied Kinesiology calibrations performed on his wife’s outstretched arm, his own work is also considered to be more spiritually powerful than highly regarded sages, such as Sri Ramana Maharshi, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, and Huang Po (Huangbo Xiyun of the Hongzhou school of Chan); contain more truth than great religious texts, for instance, the Bible; and be far more astute and surpass the mere intellect of every genius of history, including Newton and Einstein (“um, that was Hawk-ward“).

Those who are unconvinced by this seemingly grandiose suggestion have come up with various ways of explaining the phenomenon, ranging from self-deception (or simply being mistaken) to representing some sort of nefarious scheme orchestrated by a type of “New World Order” cabal. (It seems possible that a basic commitment to neoconservatism — for example, Dr. Hawkins subscribed to The Weekly Standard, an American neoconservative opinion magazine — might have done the trick; but, at this time, this is far from certain.)

What’s the truth? We may humbly submit that Hawkins likely does not warrant such a lofty status (or, conversely, we all equally share a lofty status), but as to the specific details, at this time we are unsure.

(Note: We encourage people to read Mr. Jeffrey’s discoveries regarding the finances of Veritas Publishing — the entire Hawkins product catalog of which apparently runs about $10,000 — and the Institute for Spiritual Research, Inc., the latter of which alone has amassed around $2 million. The IRS has been informed about the Institute’s alleged for-profit activities seemingly concealed behind a nonprofit facade, and we will have to wait and see how the IRS responds to this information. If you are also concerned, please consider notifying the IRS as well; the more people who offer the IRS information, the more likely, and perhaps promptly, the IRS will be to investigate this allegation. Thank you!)

Wayne Dyer, “Lord” David R. Hawkins, and PBS
NOVEMBER 14, 2014
Dr. David R. Hawkins was basically introduced to the world by Dr. Wayne Dyer on PBS. Dr. Dyer has raised more than $100 million for PBS, and surely deserves our praise for this.

However, Dr. Dyer, a much-beloved motivational speaker and proponent of the controversial New Thought movement, has also endorsed a variety of questionable teachers, from Sathya Sai Baba to John of God, and from Esther and Jerry Hicks to Gary Renard. Additionally, he seems to have implied that he believes he may have been Saint Francis in a past life, and thinks (or his “ego” thinks) he should rank as being more spiritually influential than the Dalai Lama.

While Dr. Hawkins’ claim to being endorsed by Mother Teresa, Sam Walton, and Lee Iacocca has been disproved by his biographer, Scott Jeffrey, Dr. Dyer’s endorsement of Power vs. Force (Hay House, 2002) continues to stand: “Perhaps the most important and significant book I’ve read in the past ten years.” (Which makes one wonder what books he typically reads; although, in fairness, the book would seem exhilarating if one didn’t have all of the facts — on the order of one of the most important books ever written, actually, which appears to be why some people “rush to gush.”) Furthermore, Hay House still uses an altered statement of Mother Teresa’s to sell Dr. Hawkins’ books, despite the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Center confirming that Mother Teresa did not intend to endorse Dr. Hawkins’ work (she seems to have merely responded cordially to an unsolicited manuscript of Power vs. Force sent to her by Dr. Hawkins).

Dyer, Hawkins, the Hickses, and Renard are all published by Hay House. In fact, Dyer is responsible for Hawkins being added to the Hay House roster in the first place. Prior to this time, Hawkins merely self-published his books through Vertias Publishing (veritas meaning truth in Latin, though Veritas Publishing does not have the best track record when it comes to truth). Incidentally, the Hickses — Esther being the channeler of “Abraham” — use a similar scale (2004) to Hawkins’ Map of Consciousness (1995), which likewise seems to derive — whether directly or indirectly — from L. Ron Hubbard (1951).

Yet, Gary Renard, himself a controversial teacher and interpreter of A Course in Miracles, has also criticized Dr. Hawkins’ work in his Hay House book Your Immortal Reality: How to Break the Cycle of Birth and Death:

One of the things [Hawkins] does is use [Hawkins applied] kinesiology, which is muscle testing, to test the truthfulness of statements … making a kind of lie-detector test out of it… The hidden ego hook is that now the student’s attention is being put on the wrong place, focused on an illusory test of an illusory thing in an illusory world… [Hawkins] calibrates different teachings at various levels, from 1 to 1,000. People love it… [But] the Course [states]…’Spirit has no levels, and all conflict arises from the concept of levels.’… Enlightenment has no levels…things like tests and calibrations distract the student…and all it really leads to is a lot of wasted time… Add the lie-detector test to the mix and you have a lifetime’s worth of distractions… Don’t be discouraged by those who borrow from the Course instead of teaching it.

(Note that Renard has confirmed in personal correspondence that his “teachers” — that is, the ascended masters from the future, Arten and Pursah! — were referring to David Hawkins.)

It is curious that Dr. Hawkins would even assent to being published by Hay House, though it is actually a natural fit, since likely many of its authors he would rank as negative/false or calibrate below 200 (which, ironically, derives from Hubbard’s below 2.0). As we recall, Hay House authors Doreen Virtue, and definitely Deepak Chopra (who has also been featured on PBS), for instance, Hawkins calibrated as being below 200. Hawkins disagreed with the “astral circus,” and probably much of the Hay House catalog he would place under this peculiar heading. (We confess that we are unsure precisely what astral means, though we don’t believe it has, oddly, ever been given strict definition.)

Given the quality of Dr. Dyer’s endorsements and the work of Hay House authors generally, are Wayne Dyer and Hay House truly appropriate for PBS? (Especially considering that there are far-more-pressing mysteries to be solved?)

Should Dr. Dyer actually get a free pass since he is not apparently aligned with a particular established religion, though he is committed to a New Thought belief system? Let’s not forget that Dyer introduced David R. Hawkins to the world on PBS: a medical doctor (psychiatrist) who believed that organic cigarette smoking is not harmful, climate change is not human-originated (he was a Fox News viewer, considering Bill O’Reilly to be a “bellwether of integrity“), and “the mind has no capacity to tell truth from falsehood.” Dr. Hawkins even stated that he experienced a temptation to become “Ruler of the Universe” — a far cry from Christ’s temptation of political power over the kingdoms of the world, which Hawkins appears to have attempted to emulate (maybe the next person to do so will state that she was tempted to become ruler of the multiverse).

Followers of “His” teachings consider Dr. Hawkins as the Avatar and refer to him as “Lord,” while adhering to the pseudoscientific divination technique Hawkins Applied Kinesiology and wondering whether it might justify “immoral and illegal” actions such as “killing somebody” (which might have meant murder, euthanasia, or something else — no clarification was offered). We are by no means suggesting that Dr. Dyer or PBS saw this coming, but a little more investigation by Dyer and/or PBS in the beginning — e.g. regarding Hawkins’ endorsements, doctorate, methods, and knighthood — might have stemmed the tide before it got so far out of hand. This is not asking too much: Wikipedians discovered most of this on their own.

It took Dr. Hawkins’ biographer, Scott Jeffrey — a close confidante and devotee for about a decade — to discover the truth of Hawkins’ endorsements nearly 20 years after the initial self-publication of Power vs. Force (Veritas Pub., 1995), a book loaded with scientific-sounding language without much substance, combined with mystical testimony and several spiritual platitudes (such as love is more powerful than hate). For his efforts, Mr. Jeffrey — an excellent author, deep thinker, and creative individual —  has hilariously been labelled by members of Hawkins’ devoted community as “Luciferic,” a “Spiritual Snake,” and even a “Judas!” Hawkins being seen as basically all good, anyone who disagrees with his teachings or reveals uncomfortable facts related to him, we suppose is viewed as essentially all bad (all of that taught “unconditional love” just flies right out the window!). Love itself, in the Hawkins community, appears to be more about loyalty and love for Hawkins “Himself” and his “Devotional Nonduality community,” rather than for truth and our fellow human beings, including our “enemies.”

Is pseudoscience really spiritual or magical thinking, a precursor to rationality or the transcendence of it?

Is Dr. Dyer’s work truly comparable to that of Joseph Campbell and Leo Buscaglia (that beautiful soul otherwise called “Dr. Love“), both of whom were also highly beloved and have been famously featured on public television, and who are held up by PBS executives seemingly as a possible justification for Dr. Dyer’s motivational — yet demonstrably pseudoscientific and pro-New Thought belief system — pledge-drive specials?

Let’s start the conversation!

Michael Getler, the PBS ombudsman, has stated that “self-help guru” Dr. Dyer is “certainly the king of controversy as far as my inbox goes.” (Search “Dyer” at the Ombudsman Archive to see numerous comments throughout the years regarding Dr. Dyer.) According to Getler, “Not all of the mail I get [about Dr. Dyer] is critical, some is complimentary. But the vast majority of what comes to me is disapproving.”

Keep in mind that when we buy Dr. Dyer’s “whole enchilada” or another product or package during pledge drives, Dyer is just the tip of the iceberg — sort of a relatively palatable salesman and definitely likable ambassador-evangelist — of a seemingly grand and bizarre, if often entertaining and benign, world of fringe and outlandish (and possibly harmful if followed, such as eschewing sound medical advice in favor of “intuitive wisdom” or some such [although Hay House does use disclaimers to encourage customers to consult medical authorities]) theories offered by Hay House and endorsed directly in Dyer’s products. In any case, there does seem to be something inherently damaging or possibly negligent in not encouraging critical thinking, especially for a diverse PBS audience, and maintaining that everything is “positive” despite available evidence; and to get what we “really, really, really, really want,” it is essential that we relentlessly engage in positive thinking. Do such teachings truly help people? It seems unlikely, at least in the long run.

Such a doctrine of positive thinking to get what one wants is an example of Dyer’s commitment to New Thought beliefs, such as reincarnation and manifestation or law of attraction, to which he pins an apparent diverse array of religious and psychological traditions, such that these varied traditions conform to his preconceived New Thought concepts. Since New Thought appears to be relatively unfamiliar in detail to most people, this fact will conceivably go unnoticed; but PBS ought to be held to higher standards and be cognizant of such particular religious thought systems being portrayed as religious pluralism.

Do we really need to rely on this sort of stuff to get funding for public television? Surely there are other motivational proponents of pluralistic wisdom traditions that do not willfully suspend evidence-based reasoning? (Perhaps Dyer himself could become one, possibly under PBS’ guidance? Maybe Neil deGrasse Tyson, David Pogue, Bill Nye, SciGirls, or Sid the Science Kid could lend a hand? Or might Dyer be able to channel the spirit of Carl Sagan?) For example, how about one of the numerous people who have been affiliated with the Stanford School of Medicine’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE)? Or an expert in the fascinating and burgeoning field of Positive Psychology?

It seems we must be able to bring motivation to viewers (by the way — Hello, Reader: You can do it! We Believe in You!), and funding to PBS, without having to seemingly compromise our integrity and values in the process. When you look at the lineup of PBS shows:

One of these things is not like the others.

One of these things doesn’t belong.

…Did you guess which thing?

It seems PBS may be slipping toward the way of the History Channel, with its Ancient Aliens and other blatantly profit-motivated-over-educational programming. Also, it’s probably best not to set up in people’s minds that just because one has an advanced degree — “New Age spiritual doc (Ph.D.) Wayne Dyer” — one should necessarily be trusted as an expert in general, especially when one relies heavily on anecdotal evidence. How about a fun show on critical thinking instead, PBS? Or a more compelling and well-reasoned special involving motivational wisdom?

Dear readers, if you believe that Wayne Dyer should not be featured on PBS, or at least ought to have his programs more properly vetted — for example, by looking closely into what he is promoting before his fundraising specials are broadcast, so that the burden is not placed on unsuspecting viewers up to a decade later — please express your views to Mr. Getler. Thank you!

Please also consider contacting Paula Kerger, President and CEO of PBS, who thoroughly understands the value of quality programming for our nation.

Additionally, please contact your local PBS station.

For a few excellent PBS programs of a religious, philosophical, and spiritual nature, consider Beyond Theology, Closer to Truth, and the classic series Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth. Such programs may not bring in as much pledge-drive funding, but at least they are more becoming our national treasure: PBS.

Readers Like You: Thank You.

[Update: We were saddened to learn of the loss of Dr. Wayne W. Dyer. Dr. Dyer taught that one should not pass with one’s music still within one, and he exemplified this teaching. He was an inspiration to us and to millions.

Note that by 2015, he had raised more than $200 million for public television stations. Despite our misgivings, we can’t help but feel of a kindred spirit with a fellow PBS lover. God bless you, Wayne Dyer.]
