Namgok Lee

Early life and family[edit]

Geering was born in Rangiora on 26 February 1918, the son of George Frederick Thomas Geering and Alice Geering (née Johnston).[1][2] The family spent four years in Australia from 1927 to 1930, where Geering was dux of Warrnambool Elementary School, before returning to Dunedin.[3][4] He was educated at Otago Boys' High School between 1931 and 1935, where he was dux in his final year and vice-captain of the hockey 1st XI.[3][4]

In 1936, Geering went on to study mathematics at the University of Otago, graduating Bachelor of Arts with first-class honours in 1940.[3][5] While at Otago, he continued playing hockey and was a member of the university's first-grade team. He was also active in university dramatic productions, debating and the Otago Student Christian Movement, being elected president of the latter in 1939.[4] In 1939, Geering was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship by the University of Otago.[4]

Geering "embraced" the Christian tradition in 1937.[6] After completing his BA(Hons), he entered Knox College as a theological student in 1940, and was exempted from military service in World War II.[3] He later said:[3]

I was a pacifist anyway by this stage. I took my Christian convictions so seriously that I couldn’t reconcile them with being a soldier.

On 22 May 1943, Geering married Nancy Marie McKenzie at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Timaru.[7] The couple had two children before Nancy Geering died from tuberculosis in Dunedin on 4 October 1949.[3][8] On 20 November 1951, Geering married Elaine Morrison Parker, a speech therapist, and they went on to have one child.[1][9][10]

Career[edit]

Geering was ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand (PCANZ) in 1943 and practised as a minister in Kurow; Opoho, Dunedin (1945-1950); and St James, Wellington (1950-1956) before turning to theological teaching. He was the honorary associate minister of St John's Church in Wellington from 1971 to 1983. He was named honorary assistant at St Andrew's in Wellington in 1989. Geering remains on the register (Fasti) of New Zealand Presbyterian ministers.[11]

Geering has held the positions of professor of Old Testament studies at Presbyterian Church Hall, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia (1956-1960), professor of Old Testament studies at Theological Hall, Dunedin (1960-1963), and principal of Theological Hall, Dunedin (1963-1971). In 1971, Geering became the foundation professor of religious studies at Victoria University of Wellington and held this position until his retirement in 1984 when he was appointed professor emeritus. In 1983, he became a lecturer at the St Andrew's Trust for the Study of Religion and Society.[11]

Geering is a member of the Jesus Seminar and a participant in the Living the Questions programme, an alternative to the evangelical Alpha course, which he calls “dangerous indoctrination” growing among mainstream churches.[citation needed] He is also a member of the Sea of Faith Network (New Zealand), and St Andrew's On The Terrace, as well as principal lecturer at St Andrew's Trust for the Study of Religion and Society.
Heresy charges[edit]

In 1967, Geering gained a high-profile when he was charged with "doctrinal error" and "disturbing the peace and unity of the (Presbyterian) church".[12] The case was brought before the 1967 General Assembly of the PCANZ, and dismissed without being much discussed.[13] The charges were brought by a group of conservative laymen and a conservative minister. During his church trial, he claimed that the remains of Jesus lay somewhere in Palestine and that the resurrection had been wrongfully interpreted by churches as a resuscitation of the body of Jesus. He also rejects the belief held by all monotheistic faiths that God is a supernatural being who created and continues to look over the world.[14]

Later life[edit]

Geering's second wife, Elaine, died in Cromwell on 19 August 2001.[10] In 2004, Geering married Shirley Evelyn White (née Adams).[15]

On 26 February 2018, Geering celebrated his 100th birthday, emulating his father who also reached 100 years of age.[16]

Shirley, Lady Geering, died in Petone on 1 October 2021.[17]

In 2021, Geering joined the group Intergenerational Climate Ambassadors, established in 2020 by scientist Jim Salinger and Sophie Handford, a Kapiti Coast district councillor.[18] At the time, Geering said:

"Fundamentalist Christianity would regard things to be in the hands of a God who controls. That idea of God has just vanished really. We now know that we are in the hands of natural forces in the world, and because of what humans have done to the earth, they have produced a situation where the temperature's going up all the time – and it will reach a limit which we can't survive.”[18]
Honours and awards[edit]

In 1976, Geering was conferred an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by the University of Otago.[3]

In the 1988 New Year Honours, Geering was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire,[19] and in the 2001 New Year Honours he was made a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to religious studies.[20] In the 2007 New Year Honours, he was appointed a Member of the Order of New Zealand. In 2009, he accepted redesignation as a Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, following the restoration of titular honours by the New Zealand government.[21]

Geering is a patron of the Coalition for Open Government.

Since then, he's gone on to challenge Christian orthodoxy perhaps even more profoundly, by questioning the distinction between the religious and the secular worlds."

Review
"Excellent content and presentation. I will be very happy when more of my students and associates contribute as much as Dan has to the enlightenment and evolution of humanity through breathwork."--Leonard Orr, founder of Rebirth International

"Dan Brule is one of the world's great breathwork masters of our time. He weaves together breathing physiology, psychology, and spirituality in uniquely practical ways that most anyone can learn for improving health and performance. His writing style is crisp, clear, personal, easy to read, and even exciting. His book is a "must read" not only for breathworkers, healthcare practitioners, and yoga-meditation fans but also for virtually anyone who suspects that breathing might just be something important in their lives!"--Peter M. Litchfield, Ph.D., President of the Graduate School of Behavioral Health Sciences

"Just Breathe is a needed Gift to humanity! It brings us back to the importance and value of conscious breathing, and the many ways it improves the quality and depth our lives."--Judith Kravitz, Founder and Director, Transformational Breath(R) Foundation and Global Trainings; author of Breathe Deep Laugh Loudly: The Joy of Transformational Breathing

"Just Breathe will provide you with information about the revolutionary healing and growth that comes from conscious breathing which Dan Brule has accumulated over his many years of teaching and practice. Just Breathe also will provide you with the wisdom of a world traveler who has presented breathwork successfully in more cultures and diverse settings than practically anyone on the planet. Most importantly, Just Breathe will provide you with the inspiration to adapt these life affirming practices and have the confidence to come to inner peace and self love if you just breathe."--Jim Morningstar, PhD, director of Transformations Breathwork Training Program and author of Breathing in Light and Love and The Complete Breath

"In Just Breathe, Dan Brule really explains what it means to, as the book says, just breathe. It is a fundamental part of life to breathe, so why not do it correctly? And that is exactly what Dan teaches in this book, how to breathe in a way that lets you be the healthiest you can be, and live your life one amazing breath at a time."--David Riklan, founder of SelfGrowth.com

"I always start my breathing courses by saying that breathing is simple but it is not easy. Either you JUST let your autonomic nervous system do the job and breathe your life... or you ADJUST your breath and tweak it to its optimal functioning and live the full life you deserve. I love the way Dan gently enters breath mastery through awareness, relaxation and breathing. His 'Wake Up!' 'Let Go!' and 'Take Charge' are the basics of what we all teach, but here in Just Breathe it is so clear and straightforward."--Dr. David O'Hare, MD, author of 365 Heart Coherence

"This book, which embodies Dan's life work, draws us in, inhales us into a fresh new state of awareness, of seeing how, even in the small moments of each day, we can transform our experiences with conscious breathing. Then it breathes us out into the world with freedom from habits and limitations, with wisdom from ancient traditions and modern science, and with the knowledge that it is quite possible to heal ourselves and others using the power of our breath. Thanks to Dan for this inspirational work!"--Patricia Gerbarg, MD Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, New York Medical College and coauthor of The Healing Power of the Breath

"Most of us have never even considered the gift and value of the breath until something comes in the way of its flow. In Just Breathe, Dan succeeds in sharing a lifetime of experience and wisdom in a way that is accessible and practical but at the same time wakes us up to the magic and mystery of the breath. He makes the simple act of breathing come alive through his passion and deep insight. He guides us to develop a conscious relationship with the breath to optimize every aspect of tour lives. What a gift!"--Ela Manga, MD, author of My Energy Codes, director of Woodlands Spa and Center for Conscious Living, South Africa

"Of all the experts we met during the development of the breathing chair, Dan was one of the most impressive! The breathing techniques and exercises he uses and his approach to breathwork were very new and revolutionary for us. Thanks to Dan, we now understand that breathing not only supplies oxygen to our body and releases C02 but brings our mind, body and soul to an unexpected level. Just Breathe is a guide to not only improving your physical, emotional and psychological health, and your performance, it is also a guide to raising your consciousness."

--Jean-Louis Portales, inventor of the 02Chair

"This is a timely and essential book for our challenged world. Dan Brulé is a true master and deeply inspiring. Just Breathe is free medicine that will not only bring you optimal health, but also expand your consciousness."--Mark Divine, retired navy seal, founder/ceo Sealfit, and New York Times bestselling author of The Way of the Seal and Unbeatable Mind

"Dan Brulé's new book is a fascinating and practical guide to the overlooked importance of the breath for creativity, vitality and healing."--Barnet Bain, author of The Book of Doing and Being: Rediscovering Creativity in Life, Love and Work and producer of What Dreams May Come

"I am a skeptic of nearly everything. I've trained with the Navy, helped an NFL player get on a team, raced Grand Prix motorcycles... all high stress environments. What works? Train. Eat. Sleep. That's what works. But wait a second... Enter Dan Brulé and his BREATHWORK. To me THIS technology is the fourth pillar of achievement. It makes a huge difference in performance, and I am all in. Today I might miss a workout, I might miss a meal, but I'll never miss a breathing session. Welcome to the fourth pillar, and welcome Dan as your coach."--Oren Klaff, founder of Intersection Capital and author of Pitch Anything

"Breath is the ultimate key to your well-being, and if done right, it has the power to transform your entire life--physical, mental, and spiritual. Just Breathe is the definitive breathwork handbook, and Dan Brulé is the master to show you how...I love his coaching and it's made a huge impact in my life."--Tony Robbins, bestselling author and life coach

"I have known Dan for many years through the International Breathwork Foundation. I see him as a passionate hunter, having explored, enjoyed and mastered the amazing gift that Life offers us through the breath. That gift, along with all his passion and mastery is what he offers us through Just Breathe. A very practical and inspiring book with a wide range of exercises for our daily life, and also for very specific situations and health issues. Ideal for oneself, but also to use with our peers, clients, patients, pupils and family. Don't resist the temptation to dive into it and let yourself be guided along a life-changing journey!"--Véronique Batter, MS, Breathwork coach, founder of AlmaNacer, and former President of International Breathwork Foundation

As the title say’s ‘Just Breathe’ It’s enough to change your life. Dan is a master of the breathing arts...I Love this book! The section on the yawn was magnificent, maybe they should take out the yawn’s reference to boredom in the dictionary!

I came to this book after reading about the Wim Hof method of breathing (which is included in the book) and found it to be a fantastic resource for breathwork with many different approaches described and clear and simple instructions given. How anyone can give this book less than 5 stars is a mystery to me - they need to chill and breathe a bit!

A vast and fascinating amount of information about breathing from Dan Brule. The practices he uses are derived from his early interests and various careers including the navy as a deep sea diver and emergency first aid responder, from spiritual teachers and from every day challenges . The exercises he describes are from very simple to more complex so everyone can gain the benefits of conscious breathing. A reminder that we can all learn to use something freely given, our breath, to manage a wide range of physical and mental challenges and improve our states of well being. Thank you Dan, inspirational.

There's some useful information in this book, same kind you get in any breathwork book. Sadly in this one you have to work too hard to get to it. The author spends far too much time bigging himself up, particularly at the beginning, and his ego kind of gets in the way of what he's offering. I couldn't bear more than a couple of hours of it.

I've just finished reading 'Just Breathe' in two days and have learned a huge amount on how vital correct breathing is. I am now more aware of my breathing and when I get stressed I try to adjust it which seems to help. I am on day 3 of the 21 day challenge and am really excited to see what difference it will make to my busy mind. I've bought the book for a family member and I'm positive that he too will find it as interesting as I did.

I read this book after hearing a podcast interview with Dan Brule and being keen to find out more, as he seemed such a fascinating guy. I am not sure this book was quite what I was expecting which was a definitive guide to "this is the right way to do breathing" (!)- it's more a summary of lots of different breathing techniques devised by lots of different people in the fields of health, wellness, sports, mindfulness, business etc. It was interesting but slightly overwhelming in its scope. I have picked a few of the different techniques to try (my favourite being box breathing) and will probably dip back in to try some others. (less)

I think this is one of the worst non-fiction books I have ever read, and I have read many, including plenty of pretty poor ones. Few have frustrated me quite as much as this one. It is poorly written, completely unscientific, almost devoid of references, packed with fluff and filler, and, worst of all, completely impractical. I think that it will leave more readers more confused about breathwork than they were before they read it.

I'm utterly confused about why this book is well regarded or why Tony Robbins decided to write the foreword. He doesn't seem to be alone, as there are plenty of 5 star reviews here on Goodreads, but I really don't think they are well deserved. Let me explain why in a little more detail.

The first big problem with this book is that despite being written in 2017, it makes almost no effort to describe the fairly extensive scientific research that has been done in the field of breathwork. There are some vague allusions, but nothing in the way of actual explanation, let alone scientific references. That's pretty shocking for a book that purports to the be the go to resource on breathing.

Most of the book is filled with anecdotes, some of which don't even seem to have a tenuous link to the purported theme. I don't have any issue with an author wanting to share what he thinks are his best stories, but he should probably do so in his memoirs rather than in a work that is supposed to be a practical guide.

Last but certainly not least, rather than offer any critical reflection on different disciplines, let alone any distillation down to the most important ones, he literally just very briefly describes absolutely every approach to breathwork possible. He offers almost no advice on how to decide what approach to use, nor any perspective on which are the most useful in which contexts. His 21 day programme basically amounts to just trying everything once for one day. It's the stuff of blog listicles.

After having read this book, I'm really not left with any clarity on how to apply breathwork in my life, nor why I would want to, other than Brule's unsupported assertions and references to new age mumbo jumbo. To be fair, he also evokes every possible religion under the sun and makes some kind of vague connection to breathwork, but none of it is very convincing.

My advice to you dear potential reader and aspiring breathwork practitioner is simple: don't read this book; just breathe. (less)

There is some serious stuff to breathwork.
Stuff that can make you stronger.
Stuff that can make you sharper.
Stuff that can make you more impenetrable to pain.
Stuff that can make you de-stress.
Stuff that can make you live longer.
Have you ever given thought to CPR?
You are literally being given life back through breath.

"Focus and perfect your breathing more often, and get a better quality of life always."

Loved this read, and I'm not a hippie, nor do I overly enjoy granola. (less)

This is the first time i have ever read a book on breathing or spirituality. I must say this is a book NOT about religion or some hard to believe things, but pure and practical advise on different ways to breathe and what those techniques can do to your life and day to day living. The book at first does feel overwhelming with lot of breathing exercises, but in the end summarizes a 21 day routine that is very helpful. You don't have to try all 21, just start with 1 or 2 simple breathing exercises and bring awareness and consciousness to it and you will start to see good results. I have started to feel more calm and composed, with less anxiety and more gratitude towards life after reading this book and i am sure it will help you all a lot. I tried all breathing exercises as i was reading, but in the end i am just following 2-3 breathing exercises daily for 5-10 minutes or whenever i can remember them. Hope you all will find this useful (less)

This is an incredible book that shows us the power of breathing and how the way in which you breathe and the awareness of your breath can truly impact the experience you are having no matter what you are facing. Dan Brule, someone who Tony Robbins uses and highly reccommends, explains how he has been able to train people from the military to world class athletes on controlling their breath in order to help them achieve optimal performance. How is it that there are famous yogiis who can sit in ice cold weather completely naked? There are so many types of breathing methods that this books teaches us as it relates to holding your breath in for 5 seconds, and then breathing out for 5 seconds, or changing the length of either the inhale or the exhale as well. The key is to do these a few times a day for a few minutes as eventually you become much more aware of your breath in various situations and the awarness is what ultimately allows you to focus on it and hten change it to suit your purposes when in need. It really is incredible that the pain and the experience is not so much about the outcome as it is about how we choose to perceive it. When you realize that you can control the experience through your breath, it is such a powerful feeling and I just need to ensure I take a few minutes everyday to be still and work on this breathing to see the real impact it has on me (less)

This book had some useful nuggets but also a ton of statements that were unfounded and fully lacking references. I Google checked a few of the claims and it was clear that most of the content here is based on personal anecdotes by the author. I think the idea of the boom is good but I have to imagine there are better ones out there with kore scientific backing. He combines the New Agey stuff with science without differentiating why is scientifically proven and what is theory which muddles the information. I was glad to be finished with it (it was sloppily written and edited) but would be lying if I said there weren’t points of value I was able to take from it. (less)

This wasn't the exact title of the book I read, but it didn't appear in the search bar.
The title I read is "Just Breathe- mastering breathwork" by Dan Brule. I am passionate about Health and wellbeing, so wanted to inform myself better regarding the power of the breath.
There is a mixture of science and personal experience in here, also lots of different techniques to try. The writer has a lot of expertise in this area and he also includes others who are well known.
The book itself would have benefitted from perhaps a few pictures, somehow it feels flimsy- in the page quality, but I learned a few things and reading a book is rarely wasted. (less)

Wasn't exactly what I was looking for in a book about breathing but there were some helpful exercises and lots of references to other practices that individuals could try. This book seemed to focus more on the spiritual grounding of a lot of breath work, whereas I was more interested in the practical physiological changes brought about by different deliberate breathing patterns. Personally, I felt more pages were spent on background for different teachers referenced than was necessary. That kind of background might appeal to others but left me impatient to get to the relevant exercise. (less)

I learned how the breath impacts the physical, mental, and emotional components of our health.

I am learning that breathwork is not a one size fits all exercise. I felt overwhelmed by ALL the different types of breathing exercises. I do appreciate giving multiple types of breathing exercises to find the one that best fits your style and life, but I don't want to take the time to try them all.

There were some large generalized claims on how breathwork could cure/heal certain ailments. I am a skeptic of those remarks so that is why I gave it 2 stars. (less)

Breathwork is self-help, self-healing method in alternative healing atmosphere.

I find it has taken time to learn the 3 skills: Awareness (the consciousness factor) - Wake Up! , Relaxation (the release factor) - Let Go!, and the Breathing (energy factor) - Take Charge! and I am still working on them so I have decided to purchase a copy after volunteering to read an ARC.

Dan gives a lot of biographical material on his life which is interesting but not crucial to the book.

Well, it really depends on what you want from a book, but this book is more of a summary of all the breathing techniques out there. The style is very American (as in selling breath work to the reader), which is not my favourite style. So yes, if you want to be sold breathwork and learn about (quite quickly) all the techniques, you should read this book. If you want more in-depth reading, this is not the book you should read.

I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed a whole book on breathing and breath work. The book was broken up into sections on how breath work can help your body, mind, spirit and beyond. There were great little exercises sprinkled throughout the book.

“The Key to Ultimate Transformation” pretty much summed up how one could benefit from diving into the breath, your readiness to do so will bring you what you seek. I’ll be moving onto the 21 day breath mastery challenge and seeing how that goes.

Lots of techniques, but it doesn’t really go into any depth, and weirdly misses out completely the mechanics of breathing or how to just free up your breath, which seems pretty fundamental before you start the different techniques. Could have done with more explanation as to why they’re beneficial. If you’re already fit and healthy this book is probably fine, but it’s written from a very masculine perspective that doesn’t really encompass a range of abilities.

A brilliant book to give you an overview and an insight into the importance of breath and breathing to help us in our life, on our journey through life and its challenges. Health and clam incentives abound. With a few exercises to work through.
A must read for the health concise of mind and body.
4 stars solely as felt a little lite on the exercises.

I found the comprehensive collection of different breathing exercises very interesting and useful. I am no beginner with the topic, but still I found new exercises here. The problem for me with the book is the unscientific and a bit woo woo approach to breathing effects. On the other hand, for someone else, this approach might be a strength of the book.

Great book to consider the larger benefits of conscious breathwork. I have trained with Dan in person and really enjoy his work. He simplifies and makes accessible centuries of lineages for people with both an established practice and those just trying to jump start theirs.

Never knew there's so many breathing methods! Most of the tips are very useful, more interesting in the beginning chapters and feels a bit dragging on later chapters. But will still recommend this book for people wanting to learn more about breathing exercise. (less)

Never thought anyone could make a book about breathing actually interesting. Love the fascination of this guy for breathwork and I will make a daily routine of a few minutes for focusing on my breath from now on. PS: Don’t skip the 21 days daily routine!

An essential read for anyone who wants to be an advanced breather or a breathworker. Mr. Brulé did an incredible job of breaking down the breath in a way that it must be understood in order to master breathwork. The practices in the book are invaluable.
