We have often been called to witness for our beliefs and even be jailed for them! We are inclusive and respectful of others and their faiths. Not to impose our way on others by recruitment or agressive conversion tactics. Meetings govern themselves by consensus. We don't have priests bishops or popes to mandate beliefs. Many m3etings are silent allowing for ministry of the Spirit or for messages from the Spirit to be shared! We allow people to see our good works and joy and that is w partly what calls others to investigate the Friends! Try ordering some of the pamphlets from Pendle Hill. They can inform you of the VERY recognized ways of Friends. Friends think deeply on their faith and write and journal, and these are treasured by other Friends. Some Friends rely more heavily on the Bible Christ as the basis of their faith. Yes there have been seriously separations, but always grieved, and I'm sure with the hope of future reconciliation. But a creed you recite, or catechism or water baptism ceremonies, no. I think that would be some other denomination, perhaps one of the Anabaptists or the Mennonites 🌷

    • Rich Accetta-Evans Keith Braithwaite I don't know of any modern Quaker "catechisms" at least by that name, but early Quaker Robert Barclay did write a catechism. The same Robert Barclay who also wrote The Apology.
    • Chris Wynn Keith Braithwaite there actually was a Quaker catechism many years ago and I believe it was written by Robert Barclay.
    • Jerry Aurand While Barclay calls it a catechism, it wasn’t so much for use in instructing young Friends (children, 7-12) or for those newly come to the Society, but for the thoughtful, prayerful consideration of any who reads it.

      The RSoF has never had much interest in or expression of an academic dogma, but his works are the closest we have.

    • Mackenzie Morgan Kevin Bales i don’t think catechisms are generally recited in any tradition. They’re book-length. You can look up the official answer to questions you have in them. They’re what you’d base a curriculum on when writing a curriculum. (And 17th century Quakers did have a catechism.)

      Creeds are what you recite.

    • Rich Accetta-Evans JoLee Sasakamoose Hicks himself had pretty definite beliefs though he didn't formulate them as a catechism. He would probably strike today's "Hicksites" as pretty conservative. He was also a recorded minister although many (not all) of today's "Hicksites" reject the concept of recorded ministers.

Conservative Quakerism in Kenya has new member Quaker Faith and Practice teaching for those born in the church and those who want to become. The Faith and Practice classes are divided into two levels, Associate member(Class/level 1)and Full Member (level 2) The source of this teachings is the Bible and Quaker Testimonies. We are proud if our History and we teach this too. I am a member of Stony Run Monthly Meeting of Baltimore and I know we have new member classes. What makes Quakers who they are is their identity and emphasis on listening to the Holy Spirit of God. We recognize that of God in every man(generic). I would however point out here that many who were born to Quaker parents in Kenya esoecially, do not understand what True Quakerism is. They went to schools and joined Christians unions, attended interdenominational meetings and copied worshipping styles from protestant and Pentecostal churches and have come back to demand that the same worship be practiced in the Friends meetings.

    • Luap Iyasi Rich Accetta-Evans I used the term Conservative in the Kenyan Context as Quakerism was preached in Kenya by the first missionaries, Willis Hotchkiss and others. We do have silent worshippers too in Nairobi. Evangelical Friends are in Rwanda, Burundi and some parts of Congo DRC.

  • Teri Bookless Absolutely no. There are several branches of the Quaker Tree, just like most denominations. Each has its own interpretations and emphasis. There's one small branch in the U.S. that is considered closest to the orginal Friends. One Meeting is in Barnesville, Ohio.

  • Teri Bookless In Kenya, most Friends are God loving with several small hospital ministries. They are evangelical but not like the current values of evangelicals in the US. They are leading their churches and work without interference from the west.

  • Teri Bookless In the UK there are basically two groups. One that I have friends among. I prefer Friends that are close to the original Quakers who I will call Christian Friends or Christian Quaker and they are not to be thought of like the Friends Church in the states. The UK are still unprogrammed and have wonderful worship but they do have what I prefer in their beliefs.

  • Joseph Massa I think catechisms, as used for example by Catholics and Lutherans are presentations of dogma. What attracts people to Quakerism is our lack of dogma.
  • Chuck Fager To return to the question in the OP: the answer is No, and No: Quakers do not use the “same catechism” for inquirers/applicants around the world. Further, many Quaker groups don’t use anything like a “catechism” at all.
    These answers reflect the charac
    ter of Quaker groups: yearly meetings (YMs) are autonomous, and efforts within associations of YMs to enforce uniform religious instruction have been spotty and disparate.
    Moreover, there are branches which, for different reasons, are skeptical of such formal course-like approaches.
    I wonder if other readers think that uniformity of such teaching among Quaker groups is either practical or desirable. Personally, I’m dubious.

    • Rich Accetta-Evans Jim Fussell I have attended several Quakerisn 101 classes at 15th Street Meeting and also facilitated a somewhat similar course of my own design that I called "Exploring Quakerism". Quakerism 101 uses an outline, suggested readings and suggested exercises provided by FGC if I recall correctly. My version overlapped but with different readings and more of an attempt to compare early Quaker theology with that of other Christian churches and movements. I did this course several times. It was a six week course with one session a week: usually a two or three hour session. Typically I would do the first session (about the vision of early Friends) and sometimes another session about the controversies and separations of the 19th century. But I would also invite others from the Meeting for some sessions to talk about things like our own Meeting's committees, the nature of Business Meeting, the meaning of membership, etc.

      The intent was not to give the "right answers" about what one has to believe to be a Friend, but to widen and deepen the perspective.
      Some participants were already members, some went on to become members, and some never did.
      I no longer have the energy to give such a class (at least while I also have a day job), but I know another Friend is planning to revive the Quakerism 101 version using FGC materials in the near (post-Covid) future.

    The answers to your questions (reading the responses and knowing from own reading & experience, including a visit to Nairobi in 2008) are obviously 2x no.
    IF you understand 'faith' to mean 'something that can be taught' (as you seem to do) Quakers do not pass o
    n the same teachings worldwide (and do not even all feel Called to 'pass on teachings').
    IF you understand 'catechism classes' to mean something recognisably similar as the catechism classes that I attended in the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands in which I grew up, no they don't practice that consistently.
    Partly for practical reasons (small groups, few new entries); partly because of (traditionally!) eschewing 'catechism' and favouring "Advices and Queries" instead.
    Your implicit question seems to be: 'Shouldn't we...?'
    Understood as a rethorical questions, you apparently think we should.

    Could it be that Quakers in different locations & contexts are Called to different practices?

When we talk about teaching faith, we mean Faith and practice as in beliefs, practices, shared experiences, testimonies, philosophies and traditions. We are not talking about FAITH as in Hebrews 11:1-5.

    I think part of the issue in US and UK unprogrammed Quaker meetings is these Meetings often have many people in their communities who have lived through bad and even abusive experiences in other Christian churches before finding refuge

    • Luap Iyasi Jim Fussell I can hear you loud and clear. I have made the sane observation and my prayer is that the Lord God who awakens the dead shall indeed arise and awaken our sleeping meetings to offer the true refuge that the apostle Paul preached. The Gospel of grace that made the first Quakers make an impact in the American continent. The impact of Quakerism that earned us a place in the UN and accepted our young people to serve in the army as nurses instead of holding guns to kills. An impact that made towns and roads to be named Quaker Town , Quaker road, and impact that saw Quakers like John Hopkins start big hospitals and Universities. Where is that Spirit? The answer is within us. We need to go back and pick up the pieces of our authentic selfves and start where we left not copying water baptisms, crusades and empty rituals that have spiritual value.

  • Kate Anthony No Quakers are teaching catechism classes. Not a Quaker thing to do. Faith and Practice does have some queries, but they have no right answers, they are just challenges to examine your conscience about how you and your Meeting are doing at living up to our values.

  • Ingosi Mbaisi Majority of the Kenyan Quakers are lost in Protestants mainly due to lack of quaker core values in preparation (training), of members for admission and this is further eroded by admitting very young persons who are not mature enough to make independent decision . I'm sure Introduction of catechism came as a grave mistake and can't stand the universal Quaker standards.. Kenyan Quakers need to critically and openly re examine ourselves as to our faith and practice

    • Mackenzie Morgan Jim Fussell at Adelphi there was some controversy when a family requested membership and the committee wanted to recommend full membership (not associate membership) for the 17 year old daughter. We weren’t sure if we could accept full members under 18, and that question was never answered because we were informed she’d just had a birthday and turned 18 a few days before business meeting.

      I’m recalling I was on a membership clearness committee at Langley Hill Meeting a couple decades ago for a young woman who wanted join in her senior year of high school. She was the daughter of members.
      Her age was not an issue, only her clarity and readiness. She wanted to be a full member before going away to college.

    • Pawel Broom Pst Zadock Vidolo we dont agree on what is the bible , IMO Quakers come from a different tradition a non-mechanical preacher,non materialistic(physical Bible written 2k years ago) in theological terms; and not to be confused with the Catholic Workers use of the theological term, christian anarchism is the theological term that I think is used to discribe what Quakers and others use as a theological term . This is where you and I disagree.
    • Mackenzie Morgan Pst Zadock Vidolo we have clearness committees. The clearness committee thought she should be accepted as a full member. The meeting wasn’t sure we were allowed to do that according F&P, since we have a form of membership specifically for children which is not lifelong. (So if someone joined with their parents at age 6, they still need to make an adult decision.)

      We don’t do membership classes, though. I think we should. It’d be good to have everyone one the same page. I don’t like how we leave people guessing about expectations of behavior and process.

  • Joseph Pfeiffer An interesting question. Friends have tended to express corporate convictions in the Discipline books (Faith and Practice) of respective Yearly Meetings. It would be interesting to see what kind of broad consensus there is across F&P of YM's around the world. There would be a lot of disagreement, but I imagine some real points of convergence that could articulate our commonalities. So if there is a common catechism, it is not a formal document, but the consensus of many... Which to me seems rather in alignment with Friends tradition itself.

The Orthodox descendants all have a version of the Richmond Declaration, and the Hicksites don't. These all changed early in the 20th century. I know this because I was trying to trace what happened to the advices on trade and debt, and much of that disappeared at that time, replaced by the Richmond Declaration in the Orthodox YM.

In its role of providing connective tissue, FWCC is offering a series of 6 Quaker Conversation sessions to any Friends who want to listen and learn and contribute to concerns important to Friends, particularly during this time of grief and reflection and, transformation.

Session 6:

Please join us on November 28 for Quaker Conversation 6: What is mine to do? Quaker journeys in AWPS (the Asia West Pacific Section) where we will hear from Jo Vallentine of Australia Yearly Meeting and Gerry Yokota of Japan Yearly Meeting.

These two remarkable women have lots to say about how being a Quaker has affected their lives, calling them to their work and activism. “I have been determined to take my Quakerism with me wherever I have felt called” says Jo, referring in part to her 8 years in the Australian Senate. Gerry will talk about being a Quaker in Japan and the importance of Quaker diversity, likening it to the spaces in music. Both women have lived into their Quakerism in inspiring ways.

About Gerry Yokota has been a member of Osaka Monthly Meeting, Japan Yearly Meeting since 1993. She grew up in a Southern Baptist church in the U.S. and became a Quaker as an adult. In her professional career teaching university English to undergraduates and cultural and literary theory to graduate students, she seeks to plant seeds of awareness of issues of social justice and climate justice through courses focusing on the SDGs.

What Gerry will be exploring in session 6:

As an American who has spent the last three decades of my life in Japan, I am keenly conscious of the need to “feel where the words come from,” as John Woolman said in reference to communicating with Indigenous people he encountered in the American colonies. In this Quaker Conversation, I will talk about how Japan Yearly Meeting sustains my never-ending quest to realize What Is Mine To Do in my professional life as an educator in Japan.

About Jo Vallentine – mother, grandmother, teacher, activist, accidental politician, serial offender, has been connected with Western Australia Regional Meeting since 1972.

What Jo will be exploring in session 6:
Pathway to Quakers (black sheep of family, Catholic boarding school education, finding Meeting with fabulous mentors)
Anti-nuclear campaigning accompanying motherhood, being led to contest a place in the Australian Senate in 1984 (against all odds, winning a seat)
The accidental Senator (being a peoples’ representative through a Quaker lens, simultaneously creating community)
Continuing with activism (including nonviolence trainings, Joanna Macy’s Work that Reconnects, committing holy obedience and landing in gaol, round Australia Pilgrimage with Chernobyl survivors connecting with indigenous groups, helping to establish Alternatives to Violence Project in Western Australia
Current contributions (Extinction Rebellion grandparents’ group, lobbying for de-militarisation which could fund all of U.N.s seventeen Sustainable Development goals)

The purpose of FWCC is to encourage fellowship and understanding among all the branches of the Religious Society of Friends. FWCC brings Friends together in multiple ways to celebrate God in our lives, to gather the Quaker voice and build networks to address issues of our time, and to unite us within our diversity.

The Quaker community circles the globe, spanning a rich diversity of regional cultures, beliefs and styles of worship.

FWCC organizes its work through its four section offices and the World Office, collaborating and encouraging the work of each section and work across sections. Each section embodies rich cultural and theological diversity, and they organize opportunities and programmes to bring Friends together and to learn from each other.

The World Office uniquely represents all Friends at the global level through our participation with the Quaker United Nations Offices, offering Quakers the chance to contribute to world affairs. Our consultation extends to those of other faiths through work with the World Council of Churches, the Conference of Secretaries of the Christian World Communions, and participation in global ecumenical and interfaith work.

During the coronavirus pandemic, we are running a webinar series called 'Conversations with Friends' to continue the connecting of our global family of Friends during this time of social distancing and change around the world.

Each month the FWCC World Office will be hosting a conversation for Friends world wide in partnership with Quaker agencies, and study centres, and the FWCC sections.

Black Lives Matter: In Memory of George Floyd

“Black lives matter. On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a black man, did not just die, he was killed in Minnesota by Derek Chauvin, one of four white police officers present. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey denounced the officers, “Being black in America should not be a death sentence... I believe what I saw and what I saw is wrong on every level.” Only after public outcry was Chauvin arrested and charged with 3rd degree murder and manslaughter.

We abide by laws, but in the words of Justice Marvic Leonen, "A lawful grant of power to a person doesn't guarantee that it is always wisely used. At times, what is called legal may not be just. Our collective duty is to make sure the legal will also be just." A free, just society relies on citizens to protest injustice, to assert that brutality and disrespect of life is wrong and must stop. Societies that cannot hear such critique or silence such voices are corrupt.

As a Quaker, I see every person as a child of God and oppose any form of prejudice or violence. Black men, women, and children should feel loved and respected, not afraid to walk the streets or go about their daily business.

Gandhi's explained, "Non-cooperation and civil disobedience become a sacred duty when the state has become lawless or corrupt. And a citizen who barters with such a state shares in its corruption and lawlessness." Black men, women, and children lose their lives to prejudice and injustice; this must stop.

To abolish prejudice, we must abolish privilege. Prejudice and privilege are two sides of the same cycle of oppression. Privilege is structural or legal restriction of advantage to some people at the exclusion of others and permission to use advantage with impunity. Privilege is not a pleasure, blessing, or honor; it is unnecessary, unfair power used with impunity that causes harm, and so immoral.

Development takes time, so some people gain advantage over others. A just society nurtures everyone's development, while holding the advantaged accountable. Abolishing privilege does not negate development, it ensures equity in developing knowledge, skills, health, relationships, talents, and so forth.

The time has come to separate business and state. This may seem as impossible as separation of church and state felt in their time. Governance should attend to the public good, not to accumulating wealth and protecting it with impunity.

Good intentions are important, but not enough. Besides friendship, charity, and celebration of Juneteenth commemorating the end of slavery, our government must change. Institutions of education, healthcare, food supply, housing, and law must work for equitable outcomes for everyone and restore the natural world.

Faith is a belief so strong it orders our actions. Voices covered by the few who control media often express faith in military and financial might over the power of love, conscience, and integrity. We must each turn off corporate media, find our faith, and raise our voices for the power of love, conscience, mercy, and justice.

We must demilitarize civil society. Appreciate direct service providers and not call them “frontline” workers. Stop clothing police with heavy paramilitary gear while doctors in our hospitals wear garbage bags as protective gear.

State-sanctioned violence has no place in a peaceful, just society. Hold public officials accountable for acts of violence and standards of integrity. When law itself is corrupt or used as a weapon, then law enforcement is corrupt. When we use police to protect privilege, we set up a prejudiced society.

To achieve justice, the very fabric of society must change. Rid the legal system of falsehoods. Legalizing falsehoods corrupts society and subverts integrity. Corporations are not “persons” and do not deserve the rights of persons. Corporate charters are not “contracts,” they are powers granted and supervised by the legislature on behalf of the people. In the United States, courts settle contractual disputes; government cannot intervene in contracts. To consider charters contracts removes accountability, legislative and judicial, and fuels privilege and its abuse.

By law, corporations are mercenary; they must put short-term financial gain above any other consideration. Corporations subvert institutions of education, healthcare, food supply, housing, and law for wealth accumulation, and no longer represent us. They should be the purview of legislature, precisely because they are for public good not exploitation.

Human beings are each different, yet we are united in our humanity. Grounded in our humanity, we welcome diversity with appreciation and curiosity. Genuine differences do not divide, they teach and enliven. Brainwashing and propaganda divide, polarize, and form sides of “us” and “them” engineered to exploit and manipulate. That which unites is trustworthy; that which divides is not.

The challenges to a peaceful, just society are deeply rooted in our faith and social structures. Historic changes will disrupt our own lives, not just change others. Acknowledge the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade as a crime against humanity and address the repercussions, do not walk out of official meetings when the topic arises. Shift from extraction to replacement pricing and hold producers accountable for restoration. Remove funds from corporate banking to invest in local credit unions and enterprises. Terminate corporate charters as a failed public experiment. Develop local citizen associations to secure basic needs, and citizen contracts to hold larger producers accountable in court, similar to the Creative Commons licenses.

We will not make peace with each other, until we make peace with the earth. Oppression will not end until we oppose public-sanctioned violence and exploitation. We must each find practical ways to end prejudice and privilege in our hearts, aspirations, daily lives, and occupations. At the same time, we must listen to the oppressed and marginalized with respect and takes their perspectives into account. They often see how the system operates in ways that privilege obscures and blinds. Only together will we discover how to end public-sanctioned violence and exploitation that gives rise to oppression. Then we can divest from war, violence, and brutality and invest in peace, nonviolence, and justice.”

We aim to live our lives in the outward world as a testimony to our inward Life and Light. While the Black Lives Matter movement is unfolding across the world, non-Indigenous Australians are challenged to look at themselves in order to become better allies to the First Peoples of this land.

This course will provide a safe space where we can bring bothers, questions and any awkwardness we might feel in our relationships with First Peoples. To explore questions of “white” privilege, and de-colonising.

Join us for careful readings of one of Thomas Kelly’s writings dating from 1939, The Simplification of Life. You will be invited to read sections and allow space for anyone to share a response, starting and finishing with a short period of waiting worship.

Kelly had worked on the Board of the American Friends Service Committee in the late 1930s and had a wonderful way of engaging people in the eternal present:

"We Western peoples are apt to think our great problems are external, environmental. We are not skilled in the inner life, where the real roots of our problem lie. For I would suggest that the true explanation of the complexity of our program is an inner one, not an outer one."

As usual, the rhythm of the day will include time for work, worship, rest and fellowship. No skills are required, but an enthusiasm for earthcare and growing food. You can work with others or at your own pace.

This 9-week course is offered in cooperation with Quaker Learning Australia and follows the general structure of their "Quaker Basics" resource manual. The course will run for nine weekly online sessions covering a range of topics: Individual Experience, Meeting for Worship, Vocal Ministry, Testimonies, Leadings, Quaker Organisation, and Membership.

Participants will be buddied up with 2 or 3 others in a group which will stay together through the entire course: we ask for a commitment to attend all 9 sessions for the sake of the group. You can indicate specific people for your group or be allocated to a group if you prefer.

Some readings are suggested in preparation for each session. The Zoom sessions will supplement this background reading with guest presentations and opportunities to consider the topic in your small groups.

The course is suitable for experienced Friends seeking a re-grounding in Quakerism, as well as newer attenders and inquirers. For more information, contact Sheila.Keane@silverwattle.org.au

The Book of Expanded Deism

Simply speaking, Deism is the philosophy that teaches only the following two things: 1) One should base all of one's beliefs on reason, and 
2) reason leads one to conclude that God (the being who purposefully created the universe) exists or at least probably exists.

Sounds good, doesn't it? It is, but it is only the beginning of an adequate personal philosophy. It needs much more to help one be as sane, good, and happy as possible. In other words, Deism needs to be expanded to give one an adequate personal philosophy.
The Book of Expanded Deism is the result of decades of learning, thinking, writing, debating, and revising. In it, the longtime deputy director of the World Union of Deists, Jayson X, uses his reason, compassion, and hope to craft the best personal philosophy that he can. His hope is that many people will read this book and freely adopt as many of its assertions as they honestly can. The ultimate goal is to help all humans and all the creatures humanity impacts.
