Attunement

Attunement is a spiritual healing technique developed in the early 1930s by Lloyd Meeker (d. 1954). It appears that in the 1920s he had come across some forms of magnetic healing which launched his own speculations concerning the nature of spiritual healing. He began working as a healer in 1929. Then in 1932 he had a profound spiritual experience during which he became aware of his higher self. He returned to this experience with the higher self repeatedly and soon felt that he had merged with it. He also adopted a new name, Uranda, under which he began to teach. He founded the Third Sacred School that was later incorporated as the Emissaries of Divine Light.

In the 1940s, Meeker met George Shears, a chiropractor who had developed a no-fee chiropractic practice based upon the donations of patients. He shared his ideas with his colleagues and many accepted his approach. He also began to include a form of spiritual healing in what became known as the God-Patient Chiropractor (or G.P.C.) system. Through the 1940s, Meeker used a mixed healing system that included both the laying on of hands with the idea of the radiation of healing power from the hands to specific parts of the body. Then, in 1949, a chiropractor who had worked with Meeker had an unusual experience. He was preparing to do an adjustment, but before he made it, the problem corrected itself. He intuited that the change had been made by spirit. This observation led to the separation of this specific form of healing, now taking the name Attunement, from Meeker's larger theological preachments.


The chiropractor, Albert Ackerly, eventually dropped his chiropractic practice and devoted himself full time to the development of Attunement. The practice is focused on the radiation of energy to the body, based upon the understanding that the endocrine glands are the principal portals through which spirit can enter the body. The endocrine glands are closely related to the traditional chakras. Following Ackerly's discovery, other chiropractors joined him in becoming full time Attunement healers.

In 1950, Meeker first addressed a group of G.P.C. chiropractors and soon afterward a convention of chiropractors was held at Sunrise Ranch, the headquarters of the Emissaries movement in Colorado. In 1952, a set of Emissary programs was regularly offered to chiropractic professionals through what was then known as the G.P.C. Servers Training School. The practice of Attunement was spread through the school.

In 1996, a number of Attunement practitioners gathered at Sunrise Ranch to found the Attunement Guild as a professional association to promote the practice. They use the Server's Code introduced by Meeker in 1953. There are currently several hundred Attunement practitioners found across North America, and in Israel, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and South Africa.

Answering your intial queries for Meeting foe Learning:

1] How would you describe your spiritual journey so far?  

First, I would like to tell a little bit about my background. I am born in 1948, retired from a university teaching job in the social sciences and Asian studies. My ethnic background is Korean. I left South Korea in 1964 when my parents decided to migrate to Brasil. We remigrated to Canada. So, spent a lot of time adjusting to new cultures and languages. My first major in the university in Canada was Physics which was different from what my occupation ended up beig later. 

In my twenties, although I was studying very hard to become a physicist as I that was the sole goal in my life, I was not very happy for reasons that I did not understand. My parents were both university educated and seemed "reasonable" in child rearing, so I thought they had done their best in rearing me. But, am I not happy, I asked my self. I thought about suicide, or becoming a monk, at least not pursue a normal life that most people pursue. I concluded at the time that I could do no better than my parents in child rearing, so I would not want to have a child, which meant also not getting married. 

It was around this time that I got interested in exploring the reasons for my unhappyness, which turned out to be the beginning of what would later conceived as "a sort of spiritual quest". Although my major was physics and I studied it for seven years to PhD level, I was at the same time pursuing a sepate study of philosophy and religion on my own. 

Toward the latter part of my study in physics, something happened in my family related to the diaspora politics of the overseas Koreans, that I will not explain. This lead me to abandone my dream of becoming a physicist. I now wanted become a sociologist. I wanted to explore the question of the historical, social and political forces in Korea and in the overseas Korean communities, that impacted my family and myself. 

Changing the career plan from physics to sociology was of course not easy. I was not a native speaker of English, my training was in science, not in writing. Whether this change will be successful was very unclear, and it was a gamble. So I had to work very hard in a new field to get into a PhD program, and eventually to get into an academic career in the new field. What this meant to my "spiritual quest" that started in my twenties, was it was stalled there, not to continue and grow. 

When finally retired form my job, I wanted to go back to the "spiritual quest" of my twenties, and continue the process. I was around this time that I encountered Quakerism through a friend, whom I did not know was a Friend. I had a connection to this friend though a spiritual group callled the Emissaries of Divine Light to which my siblings were connected. I should also mention that my wife is a Christian, who goes to an ethnic Korean Presbitarian church. I do not go to this church because it has a conservative leaning even though my life is not religious conservative. I am not very socal, and I continued to feel lack of sense of community. I was already feeling lack of a sense of beloniging because of many international moving (from Soutj Korea, to Brazil, Canada, USA, Japan, back to Canada, then to Australia). 

I was hoping to find a spiritial community through a Quakerism and a Quaker community.  

I should add that in terms of religion and my background, I used to say I was not religious even though I have been exposed to Buddhism as a sort of family religion and Christianity as the major religion among the migrant Koreans. 

2] What has been your involvement with Friends or with other spiritual development programs? 

I began attending a Quaker meeting in Adelaidesix years ago. I attended very diligently for about four years, but stopped doing that for a combination of a medical condition of Bowel cancer and the Covid situation. For the first four years, I attended all Yearly meetings. And it tured out that the connection I established with a group of iter state friends became stronger than that with the people in my local meeting. 

The main reason for that was that I lead a group of friends to visit North Korea as a study group to establish a peaceful relationship with the people of that country. Preparing for the trip and our effort to develop a program to interact with North Korea lead to a lot of interaction among a group of 8 to 10 friends. I am not sure whether this group can be called a spiritual one in a typical sense, but may be in a loose sense. The idea of to trip to North Korea bascally started from my CONCERN about the issue of PEACE with North Korea.  Actually, this was related to family history and the reason I gave up my career in physics.

On the matter of my encounter with "spiritual development programs" other than the Quaker one, I already mentioned the Emissaries group to which most of my siblings were related to. I got involved to this group actively only in late 2000. I went through a series of spirituality workshop in three levels. I also attended a sort of Buddhist group workshop in the late 1990s. All of these workshops were about a week long. 




3] What is it about the Meeting for Learning that attracts you now?  

Four (or five ?) years ago, when I first applied to the Meeting for Learnng, it was a way for me to learn more about Quakerism. At the time, I was told that the program was not about teaching Quakerism, but for exploring participant' own spirituality. I took it as a discuragement for a new comer for a right reason, but also for a wrong one. I will not explain that, but my status did change because I had ample tie to study Quakerism as well as other spiritual traditions since my retirement. 

4] What do you hope to gain from participating in this program?

I had read some of previous participants' reflections on attending this program. I also studied Fiona's Backhouse lecture. So I have a reasonably good idea of the intention or goal of the program, as well as the diverse outcome for participants. 

My expectation is first to acquire the Quaker frame and language of spiritual journey which is somewhat similar, and somewhat different to those of other traditions. I want pf curse to take this opportunity to enernise my spiritual journey. I also have an expectation to meet people with similar interest, in this case, in the Quaker tradition. 

However, I am already concered about finding four people to regularly talk to with my spiritual concern.

THE BURNING OF CORRUPTION

 In the beauty of holiness, clothed in the garments of our flesh bodies, minds and hearts, thankfully and humbly we bow before Thee, most gracious Lord and King. Representing Thee on earth we represent the children of men to Thee, letting our garments be sanctified in the truth of Thy Word and purified by the fire of Thy love. So may it be for all the children of men. Accordingly it is done. 

We readily acknowledge that what is to be done is done in ourselves here and now. It always is here and now. In imagination you may have been somewhere else at some other time, but never in fact. If we assemble as we have this morning in our Chapel, this then is the here and now for us together. The sounding of the Tone we have heard and hear; the fire of love has been and is known to us. In symbol this fire is present at the core of the earth and in the core of the solar system. 

In our own experience there is the fire at the core of our own beings and the fire which we acknowledge to be above us, the ascending and the descending fire respectively. Fire is the symbol of love. These two aspects of love rightly blend and fuse in us here and now. We are well aware that man was created to be at this point of fusion, standing upright in the air of the spirit on the surface of the earth. I think it was Paul who said something about being caught up into the air at a certain point. This has generated some rather fanciful ideas. But we are rightly caught up into the air of the spirit, where the fire from above and below blends. This is the positioning of man, certainly not the experienced positioning of human beings at the present time or in any historical memory that we might have. The rising up into the air of the spirit is out of the subconscious crust of corruption that is presently known in human experience. We cannot do this by some sort of application of will. It is in the process of being done by the application of the ascending flame of love in concert with the descending flame of love. It might be said that the atmosphere is clear above. There is a thin layer of corruption at the surface and below the surface. I say "thin" relatively speaking. In symbol there certainly is a lot of apparent space above us in which there is no evidence of human corruption. Mind you, in recent times human corruption has been catapulted into the immediate space in the vicinity of the earth, so that here, it might be said, there is toxic substance present in the cell of the solar system. 

Our own physical health is very largely dependent upon the clearing of toxic substances from the cells of our own bodies. 


In this connection I might share a portion of a letter with you that came from Dawn Blechman, who is, as you know, a professional in the field of nursing. She says (and incidentally the title to this particular letter is "Observations on Illness." Are you ever ill? Are you really, now, ever ill?): "In this process of transformation and transmutation, most have agreed that a 'letting go' is necessary, letting the old pass away, or letting that which does not belong pass away. But when it happens, why is it called 'illness'? "For a while now we have had moving through our population what is referred to as a 'bug,' which I understand is not confined to Sunrise but is moving in many across the nation. Each person is handling this in different ways. One is vomiting and has diarrhea, another has a sore throat and swollen glands, and yet another has a heavy chest cold—all indicating an attempt by the body to rid itself of toxins. Doctors call it the “flu,” but what has heretofore been diagnosed as flu has a virus strain which is given a name (Asian flu, etc.). Although we haven't done so, I'd be willing to bet that there are very few virus strains present, if any, but ninety percent of any exudate put under the microscope would have neon lights blinking Fear or Shame or Judgment, etc.—toxins being released from the vibrational surround of the physical cells, a letting go of the old." I wonder how many of you actually have such a view, for instance, of the flu which may attack you? 

2 The Burning of Corruption 

This is the usual human way of seeing things: We are always being attacked by this and that, so that we have to raise our defenses. We see this well reflected in the world around us, even on the international scene, where everybody fears attack and everybody raises defenses. Certainly we do not need to look at things in this way and should not be doing so. Dawn has pointed to something here of which we are all, I am sure, well aware: that there is the need for cleansing in the water of truth and for purification in the fire of love. This in times past has been spoken of as baptism. Most people seem to be afraid of being baptized and are inclined to fight the process tooth and nail. Do we need to fight and resist? We know better but probably we still do it, at least in this particular area if in no other. 

Viruses are interesting. It seems to be supposed that they cause various kinds of disease, illness. They do not. They may be present when various kinds of disease are present, but they are not the cause of them. They do give evidence of the fact that there is a cause, an invisible cause, one might say. The viruses themselves are almost invisible. Some of them apparently still are; they can't be located. As I say, these are evidences of what is over the edge of the visible in the realm of the invisible. We are aware that this realm of the invisible is related to the subconscious crust, those toxic vibrational factors that are present at the subconscious level in all human beings. The level at which they are present is relatively a narrow band, but here is the corruption. Here is the realm of vibrational decay which is then quite naturally reflected in what occurs at the level of physical form, particularly with respect to the cells of the human body. 

The cells of the human body are bathed in an invisible substance. This invisible substance, as we have just noted, at its lower edge is quite corrupt. As there is movement beyond that layer of corruption there is increasing clarity. The fire moves freely in the clear atmosphere, but when it reaches the corruption the fire begins to burn it. In theory I am sure that we can all rejoice in the fact that this is so. This is one way by which the corruption is disposed of. But the heat may seem to be uncomfortable at a level which we cannot define until the corruption spills over into the physical cells of our bodies, which then proceed to become well saturated also with corruption, toxins. 

The cells, apparently, at some point proclaim that they have had enough and proceed to eject some of this toxic substance. Then we claim that we are sick. "Poor me! I am sick. This is an increase of the discomfort that I knew before I was sick. Now it is compounded in the physical realm." And we look around to see who can do something about it. Of course, in the general pattern of things, I suppose the doctor, of whatever ilk, is sought out and the individual says, "Free me of this trouble." While the trouble has all kinds of fancy names in the medical dictionary, it is all basically the same thing. Of course the variation comes, at least partly, because of the particular cells in the body which are crying out in their discomfort. The cells may be in one of the organs of the body, they may be in the throat, they may be in the chest, they may be in the intestinal tract, they may be almost anywhere. So we have various varieties of so-called flu, for instance, but the cause of the trouble is always the same; at least it springs out of the same place. The trouble is invisible, and the poor cells of the body eventually have to be crucified if the body as a whole is to continue to live. So human beings, ourselves included, get sick—probably feel inclined to complain about it. We may not rush immediately to the medical doctor as heretofore, but we call on somebody, I am sure—the ever-willing server, no doubt. If we do this, why do we do it? "Come on, server. Help to clear the cells of my body of these wretched toxins." Well of course people do behave unwisely; the truth doesn't control in their living as a rule; so they are inclined to eat what they feel like eating and do what they feel like doing without regard to the fact that this may intensify the troubles in their cells. 

Maybe that's a good thing; it makes them aware of it at least, if there is trouble there. But we ourselves, I am sure, are concerned to allow essential transformation to occur in the invisible realm of the origins of so-called illness and disease. This is the realm of the subconscious

corruption which has dictated to human beings how they should behave. As we have noted many times before, the conscious mind then comes along and justifies the behavior. Human beings are well fooled in this regard, imagining that the conscious mind was there first and decided upon the behavior. No, all the conscious mind does is to explain the behavior, to justify it, to give reasons for it. It sprang out of the realm of corruption. Seeing that it sprang out of that realm, there is no way by which it can be justified. Nevertheless the conscious mind has become expert in this field of justification. Virtually anything can be justified by the conscious mind; it has had long centuries of practice. But the fact of the matter is that what occurs erupts out of the corrupt state of the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is uncomfortable about that and so it has somehow to explain it away. Obviously the detoxification of the cells of the body is important, but they are going to be retoxified unless something happens in the realm of the corruption, the real corruption, the invisible corruption. We have had, no doubt, the theory about disease being a means of healing, but you would have to admit it has been mostly theory. 

There is one way by which everything can be detoxified very quickly: thermonuclear war, it is called. All cells would rather rapidly be detoxified; at least it is heading in that direction. This has it backwards however, just as the nutritionists tend to have it backwards. They want to detoxify the cells through physical means, by diet, etc. However, one can never keep up with the retoxifying process as long as the invisible corruption remains. It brings it back faster than the diet can get rid of it. "Man shall not live by bread alone, but" by the process of invisible detoxification, "by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." In this process of cleansing and purification of the invisible substance, which we would perhaps refer to as pneumaplasm, it is achieved by reason of attunement—here we are back to attunements again—by the vibrational tone of the Word. However, the vibrational tone of the Word in oneself must proceed from oneself. It may be inspired perhaps or encouraged by somebody else, but unless it proceeds from within oneself it doesn't work, or it only works momentarily. We have the record of many healings at the hand of Jesus. He was present with the people. He didn't heal everybody indiscriminately. The fact is He didn't heal anybody. They either came into a level of agreement with Him, subconsciously mostly, or they weren't healed, because the healing proceeded from within themselves. We have often referred to that poor gentleman who had been in a sad state for a long, long time, lying by the pool, hoping for somebody to put him in—to get washed up I suppose. The word of Jesus was—having asked the man whether he really wanted to be healed, he professed that he did—“Take up your bed, and walk." Get up! Stop lying around! And there is obviously something present in a person, revealed through that man, which agreed with the point. So he got up. How long he stayed up is another question. We do not hear particularly of any who in fact did stay up. Something happened momentarily, there was momentary agreement with the truth; but, as is customary with human beings, they usually revert into the old state. So the troubles reoccur, because there was no adequate cleansing and purification of the heart, of the invisible level of corruption. Human beings for a long time have had many self-improvement programs. These have been emphasized in recent years, but they have been present in every generation all down through the ages. There have been many theories, many techniques, many methods used, but human beings quite evidently, while they may have benefited momentarily I suppose, did not succeed in what is clearly required in human experience. This is about as far as anyone has ever gone: improvement. There may be some value to human improvement, provided a person doesn't become self-satisfied in it. It may open a window to the awareness that the true state of man resembles not at all the state in which human beings now exist and you can't improve the state in which human beings now exist, so that that state becomes the true state. It simply cannot be done; it isn't the true state, no matter how much it is improved. The true state is something entirely different, entirely unknown, insofar as human memory is

concerned. Because of the substance of corruption that is present, any conceivable memory of it can't get through. But it isn't really such memory that is required anyway, because each moment is sufficient unto itself. This was just as true of the moments of the past as it is of the present moment and of the moments of the future. So it isn't a matter of repeating something out of the past. This is the habit that human beings have gotten into, isn't it? They are repetitious creatures, constantly repeating the things that kill them. There is really no sense to that. It takes a lot of conscious mental effort to justify it. This has apparently been successfully done over the millennia, even to this very hour, but what's the point? The conscious mind is not there to justify the corruptions of the subsconscious mind. That's a vicious circle, isn't it? It just maintains the corruption. The conscious mind is always justifying that corruption by trying to make it look as though it is very commendable. Of course there are those things which are not commendable, and the conscious mind will not hesitate to point to all the terrible things, particularly if they are present in other people. But this is not the purpose of the conscious mind. It's a purpose in which the conscious mind has become trapped. It has become so habitual that it is not noticed anymore. And all its brilliant ideas are brought forth by reason of the corruption in the subconscious mind, in order to explain and justify that corruption, make it look as though there was something right about it. Here we have the dichotomy of good and evil, don't we? "Well there is a good side. There are some good things about human beings in their present state. There may be some bad things—we'll admit that—but there are some good things too." As long as you can justify this corrupt state merely by pointing to what are supposed to be good things there is the maintenance of the corrupt state. In fact it is this that has maintained the corrupt state more than anything else. It hasn't been maintained by the bad people; who are they anyway? Maybe there are a few of those who have, as it is said, committed the unforgivable sin, the unpardonable sin, and therefore they are really bad. But did you really come across any such? Oh there may be some historical figures. Hitler is usually a pretty good scapegoat in that regard. We can get all our corruption out and put it into Hitler. Well maybe he had few redeeming features as it turned out. But it's none of our business anyway, to judge other people—just to permit something to happen here in ourselves because we stop trying to justify good things. You don't try to justify bad things, do you? You say, "Oh no. They should go away. They should be somehow cured." Let's not have any cured bad things around; that's preserved bad things, isn't it? People are always wanting to cure their diseases—what a horrible thought!—preserve them indefinitely. Of course you can't do it. No. No more justification. I heard that before somewhere. Maybe it was in the teachings of the Third Sacred School. It's wonderful to have teachings, isn't it? No more justification, no more judgment. "But this, after all, is pretty good." Well it may be deemed to be good in this state, but what about the true state? It wouldn't be there at all. It's a different state, it's a different experience. This seems so revolutionary to most human consciousnesses that they won't even look at it; but we recognize that the former things must pass away if all things are to be made new. And this is the creative process. It is more profitable to be aligned with the creative process than to resist it. Resisting it is done very largely by attempting to maintain what one deems to be good, and of course you can't do that without endeavoring to get rid of what is deemed to be bad. But you have both of them; they are both present, as the two ends of the same stick. You don't need the stick! There is a true state, the state which comes as there are those present who are willing to allow the ascending flame to rise up and to burn the invisible corruption. As the invisible corruption is burned, that purified state is reflected then at the visible level. This is the way it should work, the way it was

designed to work. It can be done the other way around, as we noticed. You can dissolve all the visible corruption, and that would take out the invisible at the same time. But then there would be nothing left! So the invisible corruption is to be purified by fire. And we find that various things rise up into our awareness as this process proceeds. But having accepted the truth, we no longer try to excuse ourselves by projecting what is simply coming up in ourselves out into our environment, onto other people, onto the circumstances there. "These are at fault." Never! Here is a beautiful restoring process occurring. The fire is rising up. It is disposing of the corruption in the invisible sense, and that will be reflected in the visible sense, so that the toxins in the cells, for instance, may be released. Of course, because the truth is controlling in your expression, you will not deliberately bring into your body again physical elements that could become toxins. You will be cautious about that. It's not too easy these days, mind you, but there will be some thoughtfulness, in the assurance that what is coming forth by reason of the purification of the invisible corruption will be clear insofar as the cells are concerned, so that when the toxins go out there will be a clear cell there. You welcome that experience! You give thanks—we heard something about that too, didn't we? In all things give thanks, because it is the creative process by which all things are made new. We never look upon illness as an enemy. If you look upon illness as an enemy, that's what it is to you, and sooner or later, out you go! Your enemy prevails—triumph! It's not the right sort of triumph. Illness is a friend. It gives evidence of something creative happening, if you will let it happen. If you interpret it as disease, then it is terrible and awful and you shouldn't be suffering this way; you need to find someone to make it all better. That's a childish sort of approach, isn't it? "Kiss me and make me better, so that I can still maintain my corrupt state"—that's what the individual is saying—“so I can still enjoy my corruption." But then it's not always enjoyable, is it? So we let it clear out because we are willing once more to assume the position where we belong, here and now, upright in the air of the spirit, standing upon the earth—the connection, the point of union, the point of blending between heaven and earth—so that all in the earth may be cleansed and purified to reflect perfectly the beauty and the order of the heaven. Here we are to let this happen, because the fire from above allows us to maintain steadfast polarity and attunement in the fire, the same fire which is working from below. And it is all to the glory of God.

1] You are Divine 

We embrace the truth of our Being, knowing we are an individualized aspect of the Creator, incarnate in human form.


2] You become what you love 

Through our love response to the source of all Being, we play our part with the One Law of Creation, which is the law of cause and effect, and so we become one with Source and a creator of a new day for humankind.


3] In all things, give thanks 

Our gratitude for the gift of life, and all that comes with it, allows us to let go of the old human story, which revolves around victimhood, and enter the sacredness of Creation.


4] Wisdom is the active knowing of the One who knows 

When our human mind stops trying to dominate the world according to its own self-serving purposes and opens to the pattern of Creation, it becomes a conscious instrument of the Creator.


5] What the world needs most from you is for you to be a sun 

Just as the sun is the center of the solar system, we, as human beings, are destined to become a center of warmth, light and gravity for our world.


6] You know what you express 

Each of us possesses profound gifts and talents that are unique to us. When they are given, our world thrives and we are fulfilled. If those gifts and talents are not given, our world withers and we live in misery.


7] Let love radiate without concern for results


When we open to the flow of Universal Love through our emotional body, and offer it unconditionally to the world, we become a transparent connection to the Divine.

The Emissaries of Divine Light network was initiated by Lloyd Arthur Meeker in 1932.[1] The foundational premise of the network is that human beings' true qualities can only be known as they are expressed in practical daily living.[2] The mission of Emissaries of Divine Light, as cited in its articles of incorporation, is to assist in the spiritual regeneration of humanity under the inspiration of the divine spirit.[3] Meeker saw the work of the Emissaries as an approach to spirituality that transcends physical and mental disciplines, and offers human beings the opportunity to experience their true identity by giving expression to the qualities of spirit that are consonant with their divine nature.[4]

Beginnings[edit]

Lloyd Arthur Meeker was born on February 25, 1907.[5] Meeker had begun to experiment with Attunement in 1929.[6] Emissaries of Divine Light dates its origin to Meeker’s spiritual awakening on September 16, 1932. On three successive evenings, Meeker had been compelled to write and, as he did so, he experienced a higher spiritual awareness that flowed through him. He reported that he had been looking for a teacher but realized through his awakening that the teacher he sought was within him.[7]

Meeker lectured, taught, and practiced Attunement in various locations in North America from 1929 to 1945.[8] He wrote under the pen name Uranda, and he was known to his followers by that name. In 1945 Meeker established his headquarters at Sunrise Ranch, which was a dryland farm at the time.[9] From 1952 to 1954 he conducted six-month Servers Training School classes at Sunrise Ranch, teaching Attunement and the spiritual understanding behind the practice, as well as practical spirituality.[10][11] These classes were attended by people from many backgrounds, and included GPC (God-Patient-Chiropractor) chiropractors, led by a former Major League Baseball pitcher, George Shears, and others.[12]

In 1954 Meeker died in a plane crash in San Francisco Bay with his wife, Kathy Meeker. A close associate of Meeker’s, Albert Ackerley, and two children also died in the crash.[13] Lord Martin Cecil (1909-1988), who had worked closely with Meeker, assumed the responsibility for leading Emissaries of Divine Light from 1954 until his death in 1988.[13] Lord Martin succeeded his older brother to become The 7th Marquess of Exeter in October 1981.

Development under Lord Martin Cecil's leadership[edit]

Lord Martin Cecil was the second son of William Cecil, 5th Marquess of Exeter and was descended from William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, chief adviser to Queen Elizabeth I.[14][15] He led a ranching operation on his family’s property in the Cariboo country of British Columbia.[16] In 1948, Cecil formed a spiritual community at 100 Mile House, BC.[17] On the death of his brother, David Cecil, 6th Marquess of Exeter, in October 1981, he became The 7th Marquess of Exeter and a member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom. However, he never spoke in the House.[18]

Under Lord Martin's leadership, the network grew to about 4,000 adherents.[19] Many young people, disenchanted with the Vietnam War and inspired by the idealism of the 1960s and ’70s, were drawn to his message and the network that was growing around him. Twelve centers developed around the world, and numerous other nonprofit organizations were birthed by participants in Emissaries of Divine Light.[20] These included an outdoor adventure educational organization, Educo; an association of spiritually based business people, Renaissance Business Associates; an association of media professionals, Association for Responsible Communication; an association of educators, Renaissance Educational Associates; and Emissary Foundation International.[21][22][23]

Bill Bahan became an important leader and teacher for Emissaries of Divine Light in the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s, offering classes at Sunrise Ranch; Epping, New Hampshire;[20] and Livingston Manor, New York.[24] He was a nephew of George Shears, D.C., leader of the G-P-C Chiropractic Movement. He and his brother Walter Bahan (also active in the Emissary program), along with three other brothers (all five chiropractors), operated the Bahan and Bahan Chiropractic Clinics in Salem and Derry, New Hampshire, using GPC principles.[25] Bill founded the Whole Health Institute, an association of healthcare professionals promoting wholistic health.[26][27] They hosted conferences and lectures around the world, and published the journal Healing Currents. In Bill's words, "Health is the unhindered expression of life through the body, truth through the mind and love through the heart."


Transition after Lord Exeter's death[edit]

When Lord Exeter died in January 1988, his son, Michael Cecil, 8th Marquess of Exeter (formerly known as Lord Burghley), became the leader of Emissaries of Divine Light until he left the organisation in 1996.[28] In that eight-year period, much of the leadership left the organisation, including most of the children of both Lloyd Arthur Meeker and Martin Cecil, 7th Marquess of Exeter, who had been prominent in the network. From 1988 to 1996, more than two thirds of the participants in Emissaries of Divine Light left as well.[19][28] Many ex-members became bitter about their experience and launched accusations against the organization. One member, Robert Coates, even began playing football in one of the group's most sacred spaces.[29][30]

As the 8th Marquess of Exeter resigned from his position in 1996, a group of trustees assumed responsibility for the leadership of the network. They set in place ethical guidelines throughout the network and addressed grievances brought to them by participants. They sought to bring the universal truths taught by Lloyd Arthur Meeker into contemporary language and practice.

Recent history[edit]

In the 1990s, Emissaries of Divine Light developed new programs for spiritual understanding and personal development. Deepening Spiritual Expression and The Opening are week-long residential programs that are still offered by the organization.[31] They also developed Attunement Practitioner certification training, which is available at many Emissary centers.

In August 2004, the trustees of Emissaries of Divine Light named David Karchere as the leader of the global network. In 2008, David Karchere and Jane Anetrini developed and taught a year-long leadership program based on the teachings of Emissaries of Divine Light. A second session of the program was conducted in 2009 and 2010.[32] In 2012 they initiated a new series of seminars under the title Practical Spirituality: An Operator’s Guide to Being Human, led by David Karchere.[33]

Sunrise Ranch[edit]

The headquarters of Emissaries of Divine Light was established in 1945 at Sunrise Ranch in Loveland, Colorado, now a conference and retreat center staffed by a community of eighty-five people.[34][35] Sunrise Ranch hosts workshops, seminars and retreats intended to offer the participants fresh thinking and understanding, leading to a direct experience of spiritual renewal.[36] There are seven other major centers around the world for Emissaries of Divine Light, each offering programs with a similar approach.[19]

Sunrise Ranch also offers residential work-study programs in practical spirituality, which it defines as the application of universal spiritual principles to the common issues of human life.[37] These include a program designed for personal spiritual renewal, called Full Self Emergence, and a Permaculture Design Course for people interested in sustainable human systems and sustainable agriculture.[36][38]

Creative Field Project[edit]

The trustees of Emissaries of Divine Light lead the Creative Field Project.[39] The project is an exploration of the power of human intention to influence the field of energy held by a group of people. The Creative Field Project began in 2009 with a network of small groups around the world that meet monthly by telephone. It included the first Creative Field Conference in 2011 at Sunrise Ranch that featured Lynne McTaggart, who wrote The Field; and American priest and theologian Matthew Fox.[40] In 2012, Emissaries of Divine Light joined with the Novalis Ubuntu Institute in Cape Town, South Africa, to host the Creative Field Conference—South Africa: Your Destiny Is Calling.[41]

Teaching and practices[edit]

Emissaries of Divine Light teach that the key to creative living is the individual’s openness to the source of universal power and intelligence within them, and that human emotions either connect a person to that source or cut them off from it.[42] The educational programs of the Emissaries are designed to assist people to find out what has been emotionally triggering them, so that they can withdraw their emotional attention from the trigger and turn it to the life force within them.[43] The Emissaries believe that behind all emotions is the universal power of love and a universal intelligence that bring spiritual enlightenment. They teach that through deliberate conscious thought a person can let their own emotional current purify, so that they open themselves to the flow of the universal power and intelligence within them.[44]

The One Law[edit]

  • The central teaching of Emissaries of Divine Light is referred to as The One Law. 
  • They describe it as a law of cause and effect.[45] 
  • They see the causative factor in spiritual regeneration as the universal power and intelligence within all people, and the effect in human experience as dependent on the response to that internal reality.[46] 
  • They describe the creative process in human experience as the working of The One Law in a sequence of five stages: radiation, response, attraction, union and unified radiation.[47] 
  • Their seminars claim to assist people to withdraw their energetic response from the circumstances around them and direct it to the power and intelligence within them.[48]

Emissaries of Divine Light describe the process of personal spiritual renewal as Full Self Emergence because they believe that a person is renewed when their own divine selfhood expresses through their mind, emotions and their body.[49] They use the story of the Seven Days of Creation in Genesis as a symbolic template for the process of spiritual renewal in the life of the individual, and for humankind as a whole.[50]

Attunement[edit]

Attunement is a central practice of Emissaries of Divine Light. The origin of the word Attunement refers to the attuning of the human capacity with the universal animating spirit within all people.[51] Attunement practitioners believe that positive shifts in consciousness release a healing energy through a person’s body, mind and emotions.[52]

Emissaries of Divine Light practice Attunement as a form of energy medicine.[53] Attunement practitioners believe that universal life energy is conveyed to the client through the hands of the practitioner. The primary contact points for the client receiving the Attunement are the endocrine glands. Attunement practitioners teach that the endocrine glands are portals for universal life energy that operates through the physical body, and through the mental and emotional function of the individual.[54]

Emissaries of Divine Light also teach Attunement as a personal spiritual practice.[55] They believe it is a central factor in the conscious evolution of humanity.[56]

Leadership[edit]

Emissaries of Divine Light is led by David Karchere, who is the spiritual director of the organization, and six other trustees.[57] Karchere lives, writes and teaches at Sunrise Ranch, and travels in North America, Europe, Africa and Australia, offering programs on practical spirituality and Attunement.

The trustees are elected by an International Emissary Congress with representatives from Emissary organizations around the world. Currently, the trustees are Jane Anetrini, Ruth Buckingham, Hugh Duff, David Karchere, Marilyn Manderson, Phil Richardson and Maureen Waller.[58]

Major centers[edit]

In addition to their international headquarters at Sunrise Ranch, Emissaries of Divine Light used to operate Glen Ivy in Corona, California, as a conference and retreat center and an Attunement teaching center. Glen Ivy is also a natural mineral springs. The Emissaries leased the mineral springs and the spa property adjacent to their center to Glen Ivy Hot Springs, a popular destination in Southern California.[59] The property was sold in 2016.

Publications[edit]

Beginning in the 1930s, Emissaries of Divine Light have continually published their writings and teachings and circulated these to their membership. In 1936, Lloyd A. Meeker published his seven-week meditation guide, Seven Steps to the Temple of Light, as well as his correspondence course, Steps to Mastership.[60][61] In the 1980s, Martin Cecil published eighteen volumes of his own writing and the writings of Lloyd Meeker under the title The Third Sacred School.[62]

For most of its history, weekly talks and writings of Emissary leadership have been distributed by regular mail. Since 2005, the organization has circulated a weekly e-mail message, The Pulse of Spirit, authored by David Karchere and other current leaders of the network.[63] In 2010 they began to publish the Journal of the Creative Field.
