Thank you Dr. Bauer
This was lovely. So informative. So easy to listen to. Just the right blend of science and actionable items. I'm a health coach and I completely support Dr. Bowers perspective.

Advertisment for private Clinic
Dr. Bauer is evidently informed on the consensus of the scientific community regarding so called "alternative medicines". He is well aware of the evidence, or lack thereof, of the effectiveness of the cures that are proposed in his clinic. He never ventures to claim that there is any science based proof that integrative medicines work but only that, in some cases, some experiments suggest a possible correlation between certain non western cures and a perceived improvement of a patient's health conditions.
Most of the integrative treatments proposed are in fact easily correlated with well being. Relaxing, exercise, a healthy diet and meditation are all factors that understandably improve a person's health conditions and that is no mistery. Just as reckless drunk driving can be hazardous to your health (and that of others).
So for the most part this lecture states what should be quite obvious.
Not so when he proceeds to illustrate the supposed benefits of acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. Here he borders closely on quackery when he omits to state that both treatments have been largely debunked and limits himself to state that "some studies seem to show that there mught be beneficial effects". A

For a different, more skeptical (and in my opinion, correct) view, I suggest Dr. Steven Novella's "Medical Myths" and "A Skeptic's Guide" also in the Great Courses or Paul Offit's "Do you believe in magic?" or any book by Dr. Michael Shermer.
The above books give details about the studies they refer to so you can check facts out for yourself.
Hope this is helpful.

All about meditation NOT integrative medicine
If you want to know all the ways meditation can help your health, this course is good. If you want to know what integrated medicine is, what to expect in integrated medicine, or how to access it, forget it....

The information is good, but this course is not what it the title says....

Very basic.
Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor Brent A. Bauer?

The only Great Courses Book I have heard so far that I would not recommend.

What was most disappointing about The Great Courses’s story?

I feel like any adult would have known everything in this book just from living in our culture.

As human beings are integrative, this concept of medicine managing different aspects of the effect of disease in the whole person is very practical and realistic. I loved it.

Too bad these weren't recorded live
This audio seems to have come from the author reading his lecture notes rather than actual lectures. I think he would have had more energy had he been actually delivering this information live. I am sure they were very interesting in-person, but I had to speed up the recording to make it through.

However, that said, it was well-researched and had good information. Worth listening to if you are exploring integrative medicine. Anyone considering using Mayo Clinic services should listen to the last two chapters at a minimum, because they speak of options that are available there.

The Science of Integrative Medicine
This presentation was well done with good information. The reason I only gave it four stars was only because it was very basic. For anyone just starting their study of integrative medicine, it was great! I have read and studied the topic quite a bit over the years, so there was no new information for me. I would highly recommend it to someone with little knowledge of the subject.

Very interesting
I have not completed this entire course, but am 75% done. I am captivated by the material. The author is great at telling the story and explaining the medical terminology. I am not a doctor nor do I work in this environment, but have always liked to know more about the medical profession.

I find this course very good at describing the various ailments people may have as they come into an ED unit. It makes me appreciate how hard the job is as an MD in the emergency room. I love the presenters voice and tone. He makes the story so real and is a good teacher.

Clear, Concise, Convincing!
Nothing like science-based, proven strategies that improve wellness to get my happy dance going. Dr Bauer offers a friendly manner and well-paced course that is accessible, achievable, and believable. As a fitness professional, I have already seen and experienced the benefits of alternative medicine. Given the Mayo Clinic's chops and this course, I can now point to one polished, comprehensive source that can help people age actively. Well-organized, well-defined terms, well researched. Listen, learn, feel and heal!

Not a Great Use of Time
I have completed well over 100 of the Great Courses. I almost always come away feeling that the time invested in watching them was well worth while. Not so with this course.

Dr. Bauer is personable and easy to listen to, and he is certainly well informed about the various aspects of supplementary treatments and activities. He does an admirable job of explaining what can be undertaken to improve one’s health, and encourages consultation with your primary health care provider in many cases. Research findings are presented to support the activities, showing the benefits of them.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of repetition in his discourse, as well as in the images that are used. The course also seems to have a secondary agenda of laying accolades on the Mayo Clinic Integrative Medicine and Health unit, which isn’t particularly useful when one doesn’t live anywhere near it. That said, though, it does provide a good foundation for the ideas he presents.

I recommend the course because of the breadth of information it provides, but caution the viewer that for many there may not be a strong correlation between the time spent watching and the benefits from it.

As a final comment, Kanopy streaming service offers about 100 Great Courses through our library, which is how I watched this course. My compliments to The Great Courses for supporting this service!

Good Common Sense Approach to Medicine
Brent Bauer presents a survey of alternative medicine. His approach is based on a logical application of various methods which is grounded in medical research. I often consult the Mayo Clinic's website to see what they think of various types of herbal medicine, and Bauer takes the same sensible approach that one can see on the Mayo Clinic's website. Many doctors closely follow guidelines, which are often developed partly in response to political pressures, and it is refreshing to see a doctor who thinks through the issues before arriving at a recommendation.

The Science of Integrative Medicine
Integrative Medicine is a hot buzzword these days and I bought this course so I could get an authoritative take on what it is and how it differs from traditional. medicine. It turns out to be an alternate take on how to deal with medical issues, through acupuncture, hypnosis, and other approaches rather than traditional medicine's "pill or knife" approach. Integrative medicine is light on peer-review studies and solid proof of its effectiveness, but is part of a holistic view of medicine. and should be considered by anyone.

A great course!
I think it's fantastic that clinics like the Mayo clinic are taking such a strong interest in complementary therapies. It's great to see science catching up with ancient medical techniques by carrying out proper clinical, and much needed, trials. I really enjoyed this course. Very informative. An excellent resource to quote from if your doctor is still sceptical about certain complementary therapies, as sadly many still are, and hasn't bothered to do any research.

A "Cardinal" of the "Vatican of Western Medicine"
I am a graduate of Harvard Medical School class of 1979. I never dreamed that a Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic would speak so eloquently and comprehensively about natural practices that complement conventional Western Medicine. Essentially all twelve lectures expound on the theme of NESS. That is Nutrition, Exercise, Stress Reduction and Support. My chief criticism is that Dr. Bauer makes a strong case that these four principles may be necessary components for healing but it is never clear what Dr. Bauer believes are sufficient criteria for healing. I imagine that in Rochester, Minnesota most of his clients come for consultation because they are diagnostic challenges or for surgery and/or radiation therapy for which Mayo specializes. To be fair, Dr. Bauer does review programs at Mayo for patient families and for staff and employees. Those clients may have problems closer to what might be seen in most other communities. I listened to eleven of the twelve lectures while driving in the car. I watched the lecture on acupuncture on the GreatCoursePlus streaming app because acupuncture is a special interest of mine in that I use acupuncture heavily in my own medical practice. Overall I congratulate Dr. Bauer on his polished presentation.

I suspect people who purchase "Great Courses" are above average intelligence and have a great curiosity about many different topics. Since I already read a lot about health, nutrition, and medicine, I didn't learn much that was earth-shatteringly new to me. But what I did was learn that there are doctors out there who understand the importance of integrative medicine, and don't consider it hogwash. It was great to learn the Mayo Clinic's perspective on this topic. It brought a lot of different things that I had read together, and I truly enjoyed it.

"What's a body to do?" Summarized.
My wife and I noticed early on that Dr Bauer seemed "unexercised" himself, which he explains in Section 8 as an arthritic condition. We sympathize, and and consider that he has really done the investigation as a personal, not just professional, quest. Hope the Dr continues his inquiry, as his evidence based summary findings are spot on, and I found his personal but professional style optimal for medical information retention.

The sections on supplements was as complex to grasp as the current status as I know about it, and I have an informatics background. With the conundrum about everything from salt (and various food fads), Advil and Tylenol, and supplements in general (JAMA articles have indicated increased morbidity, cross- effects, problematic manufacture), "what to do"? The best advice given by Dr Bauer is that the less medications needed of any kind, the better; and basic NESS (nutrition, exercise, stress management, social support) is the best supplement. JAMA articles seem to show that older adults, and younger healthy adults (???), are the most likely gullible consumers of suspicious product; so beware, as suggested here!

A personal takeaway is the "mind- body" connection. The stress reduction information was informative, especially as I'm very curious about meditation, and I currently practice Tai Chi and Qigong exercise as daily non- cardio wake- up and warm down, and "hourly movement" ritual. I didn't know of the evidence- based good results concerning guided imagery, and "spirituality". Although as a techie I've heard of biofeedback and other health improving apps, I'm happy with Dr Bauer's serious medical talk of what's known to work, and software apps that were found effective.

I was personally unaware of the vast research that has confirmed the usefulness of spas, various mind- body therapies, acupuncture, message and chiropractry, various relaxation therapies. Guided imagery, art therapy, music therapy; can computer games therapy be far behind? (Yes, search it out!)

Great Courses has various Tai Chi offerings that I recommend, various meditation guides in line with Dr Bauer's suggestion. There's a "Physiology and Fitness" and other offerings by Dean Hodgkin for those like me embracing "moving cardio mediation". The Integrative Medicine on-line version has direct links to Amazon for "best references".

Problematic is the idea of "joyful stress", the absolute need for self- actualization and growth, and mystery. The idea that statically placid is always ideal, is something that the Buddha and Abraham Maslow both found inadequate. There is a need beyond stress reduction, and the placid implication of "healthful living", that is not comprehensively addressed here. My personal ideal is actually "good stress" associated with a great cardio workout like a great 10K race or martial arts session, or accomplishing a difficult work or life goal, and there is no bridge to that in this offering.

In sum, "The Science of Integrative Medicine" delivers summary, evidential, and historic information about all the physical and mindful therapies I've been curious about (but had reservations about), as an overview and reference guide to further exploration. My son is a physician, and I will make him aware that this useful summary exists. Mayo should be happy to support efforts that progressively improve health care, and in memory of great physicians of the ages such as Hippocrates and Hua Tuo, so should we all.

new options for healthy living
This is a brief introduction to Complementary or Integrative Medicine. Basically, it’s all about creating wellness and relaxing the mind/body/spirit. If you ask me, it's short and interesting, sprinkled with practical advice. Keep in mind that it's more of a gentle introduction rather than a hefty, in-depth survey. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable 12-lecture tour.

I’m not exactly a touchy-feely, spiritual kind of person, so I’m not entirely sold on a number of approaches introduced here, e.g. hypnotherapy. But I am looking to live a healthier, less stressful life. And all of these approaches to healthy living build a foundation through NESS (nutrition, exercise, stress management, social networking). That’s the ultimate focus here.

While a few topics were not exactly new because I learned about them in other TGC courses, I did in fact pick up a few things along the way.

What works? For me, Guided Imagery and Progressive Muscle Relaxation worked wonders.

I liked that all of the therapies and interventions were noted with references to studies regarding their effectiveness (or when lacking or just showing promise). At least all of these topics provide a solid baseline for common knowledge when you read about them in the news or hear others talking about various herbs and supplements, etc.

I’ll look into following up on works cited in the Bibliography. Looks comprehensive.

The set was sharp and I really enjoyed the course with Dr Bauer. He’s easygoing and trustworthy. And he didn't walk around too much.

Great Information
A lot of in depth information on a few examples of treatments, herbs, etc. Gives information on how to research and vet different alternative and natural practices, but not information on each practice.
Enjoyed learning about the information discussed.

Well-balanced presentation
I have not completed listening to this course but so far am favorably impressed. The instructor is addressing a modern issue on integrating conventional medicine with alternative treatments and therapies. His is an MD but presents a balanced approach on the good and the bad with conventional versus alternative treatments. He is open-minded to alternative therapies if they help the patient and if they make sense. This is a course that all should listen to if they care about their health and want to work with their doctor to manage it. I like his open-minded approach to new ideas that were not taught when he went to medical school.

Relevant content
I have always been interested in learning more about I refractive medicine and this course did not disappoint! I learned a tremendous amount, took notes and actually tried some new things, like meditation. And it helped! I enjoyed the easy manner of Dr. Bauer. He was a great lecturer. Loved this course.

Not much science
The bulk of this program is the author explaining why you should involve your western doctor in any integrative medicine. I haven't found many western doctors open to this. There is a much better alternative course with a great deal more science.

It may depend on where you live, but most of my MDs are not against using non-Western medicine as a complement, and often recommend massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, etc. Just not unproven garbage that can harm more than hurt (see, e.g., Steve Jobs who regretted his reliance on non-Western practices that accelerated his death).

Great talk, but no go.
I am an integrative medicine doctor, and this gives a great overview, but the lecturer is an MD (medical dr- allopathic). It clearly shows that the dr actually doesn't even practice what he lectures on. His mere size and inflammatory look says it all. How can you passionately teach something and not practice it? The course is a disappointment as it gives only a very broad overview (doesn't even really touch on the subjects), just explains around it. I signed up thinking this is wonderful. After reviewing 2 courses I am ready to cancel my membership.

This review is a little judgmental/body-shaming--many people who have thyroid disorders, trauma, or a number of other conditions are unable to achieve the perfect "look," and the time demand of most MD schedules does not always allow the ideal diet. MDs tend to sacrifice most of their health in order to keep other people alive.

Speaking of which, it's also not a downside that the guy's an MD. Most board-certified integrative medicine physicians are in fact MDs or DOs--integrative meaning they integrate evidence-based standards into care regardless of its origins, as opposed to purely complementary and purely allopathic medicine. Some states still don't have full naturopathic licensure (which I think is what you're referring to), and most patients prefer a provider who also went to a fully universally accepted medical school in addition to other training. What you do is good. What this guy does is also good. Let's not be judging people on anything that's not actually course content here.

Speaking of...it appears that the goal here is more to teach people what the treatments are, not actually treat the treatment modalities--you can't expect to actually be certified in acupuncture safely with one lecture, for example, unless you specifically study the BFA technique in the military, which is then extremely limited.

Very interesting
I found the content quite interesting - I use these MP-3 files while I'm exercising (usually about a 2 mile walk/jog - which fits well with the approximately 30 minute sessions). It definitely has made me more open to considering trying some of these alternative supplemental options in addition to the regular medical care that might be needed in the future. I do currently use some mild yoga and Tai Chi exercises most days.

For some reason, the DVD doesn't play on my laptop so I am unable to accurately rate the product. Very disappointed as I was looking forward to watching it. I would be happy to adjust my review accordingly should I actually be able to watch the DVD.

How is this course different from The Science of Natural Healing?
1
answer
Answer this Question
TheGreatCourses · 7 years ago
This course covers some of the same topics (e.g., yoga, meditation, guided imagery) as Science of Natural Healing, but this course is unique in its approach and content. Dr. Bauer presents only those techniques and treatments that Mayo Clinic specifically endorses based on peer-reviewed scientific research. In addition, this course contains the latest, most up-to-date research.

Your purchase of this course comes with a 132-page accompanying guidebook, which provides a detailed lesson-by-lesson summary, plus Suggested Readings and a lengthy Bibliography. You may want to use the guidebook not just to review content covered in the course, but to go over specific details such as pros, cons, and risks of the various complementary medical practices covered throughout the lessons. In addition, the guidebook reproduces selected detailed lists from the lessons, including the “10 Most Promising Practices in Integrative Medicine” (Lesson 1) and “4 Steps to Starting Meditation” (Lesson 2), plus checklists of questions to ask a potential biofeedback therapist (Lesson 5) and a potential massage therapist (Lesson 11).

Describe the video elements presented.

Answer this Question
TheGreatCourses · 7 years ago
This course will be enjoyable and comprehensible on either audio or video, but there will certainly be a wealth of interesting and instructive elements featured for video buyers. Here’s how to consider choosing between the two formats:
You should buy video if you consider yourself a visual learner, or if you would benefit from seeing unfamiliar techniques illustrated on-screen. While these lessons do not require video for comprehension they are richly illustrated. This course features a great deal of images and video provided by Mayo Clinic and shot or filmed on campus at Mayo Clinic. All the techniques discussed throughout the course are shown in images or footage, often featuring Mayo Clinic’s own experts. Among the techniques illustrated on-screen are tai chi, acupressure, and deep breathing, among others.
You should buy audio if listening better suits your lifestyle. This course, while being science-based, does not rely on imagery and graphics to understand the lessons. Treatment techniques are described in detail, and for lists of pros and cons, or conditions for which specific treatments have been proven effective, you can always refer to the accompanying course guidebook that comes free with your purchase of the course. For example, you may want to see the course guidebook to review Dr. Bauer’s checklists of questions to ask a potential biofeedback therapist (Lesson 5) and a potential massage therapist (Lesson 11).
