4.8 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

Yoga has become increasingly popular in mainstream culture, with varied interpretations of how it should be taught and practiced, and increased awareness of its beneficial effects as a healing modality. As a result, yoga therapy has emerged as an effective alternative approach to health and wellness. Explaining the principles and underpinning ideas presented by the yoga therapy movement, James Foulkes identifies the methods leading to the most effective practice.

Applying a principles-based approach, he explores the concept of delivering yoga therapeutically and discusses more complete ways of thinking about anatomy and the wholeness of the human being, using theories, illustrations, and case studies. Yoga therapy practitioners will learn to improve their work and more effectively support their clients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for yoga practitioners, yoga therapists and anyone interested in true health and wellness.Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 3 December 2017

As an aspiring yoga teacher, I was drawn to this book to understand the art of yoga therapy. Not only did I find prescription-free practical techniques, but also an approach that respects and honors the whole person and empowers individuals to connect with their bodies’ innate healing processes.

With Principles and Themes in Yoga Therapy, James Foulkes has presented an approach to yoga and yoga therapy that is deceptively simple, direct and powerful. This elegantly written book leaves space for the practitioner to inquire within and sense relationships within the physical body, within the mind, and how this interplay affects experience. It is a refreshing antidote to the way yoga has been mainstreamed in the West as an asana-focused, primarily physical experience. Yoga Therapy reminds us that the practice, and specifically, it’s therapeutic value is a highly personal experience in that the practitioner learns to trust the intelligence and wisdom of the body, and cultivates a healthy partnership with the body’s living, dynamic, changing nature.

As one reads the book, it feels like the transmission of a deeper wisdom is occurring. Reading a particular passage provides on its face an insight or piece of knowledge that continues to unfold not only in conceptual understanding, but also as one practices the principle through direct movement experience. This is the genius of the book. In providing an open framework of principles and themes, much like the physical framework of the body itself, each concept is further embodied in living experience. It’s an embodiment through the coordination of intention, attention, and awareness ultimately expressed into movement, which creates a profoundly different experience of yoga that allows for healing; healing that is initiated and expressed through the practitioner with the yoga therapist holding space for this unfoldment. I am discovering that this approach to yoga invites a sense of embodiment that feels sacred. It allows room for the practitioner to connect with and listen to their inner teacher, which cultivates a deep trust, knowing and understanding of one’s changing nature and needs, resulting in skillful response to each moment both on the mat, and off. This book is essential reading for yoga practitioners, yoga therapists and anyone interested in cultivating true health and wellness.

James Foulkes delivers a resource for yoga therapists and those interested in the art of yoga therapy that is grounded in ancient traditions that we desperately need to integrate into our Western paradigm of healthcare. The book is built around chapters of themes or principles that build on each other and can be paired with each other with a sense of fluidity that mirrors the ever evolving yoga practice of any yoga practitioner. Case studies for each theme bring to light the therapeutic potential for each theme of the practice. A detailed description of a yoga practice for each theme allows the reader to embody the theme in a tangible way. James also includes a brief history of yoga therapy, a section focused on meaningful interactions and relationships with clients, and the importance of self care for the yoga therapist.
My suggestion for anyone studying yoga therapy is to follow James' guidance and take the book a chapter or theme at a time. Take notes, experience the practice, sleep on it, and revisit the theme again the next day. Look for recurring and compatible themes and don't be afraid to revisit old themes along the way. Each time I revisit a chapter or yoga practice, I feel that I pick up on something new that resonates with me.
As our healthcare system begins to acknowledge and accept the value of mind-body practices, I anticipate seeing more programs in hospitals built on the themes James presents here. Both as a therapy for patients with chronic medical conditions and chronic pain as well as a for preventative wellness therapy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Offering awareness and understanding of the process from withinReviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 3 December 2017

I pursued this book in large part looking for insights into how the practice of yoga has helped me along my life’s path – to find more freedom and ease physically and to negotiate life with more resilience. After experiencing talk therapy, I looked back and wondered how that process had yielded the emotional and psychological maturity I noticed. Similarly, I asked myself how this physical (asana) practice might lead to greater self-awareness and understanding? What is the connection between self-knowledge and healing?
This book offers insights into these and similar questions: in what ways can yoga be “therapeutic”? How can “yoga therapy” enhance one’s life off the mat? Beyond physical healing, how does yoga/yoga therapy encourage one to grow/develop emotionally and spiritually? Through words and imagery, case studies and suggested exercises, this book allows the reader to intuit some of these deeper mysteries of yoga.
As a yoga practitioner and teacher, though not a therapist myself, I found the themes and principles explored in the book helpful for enriching my personal practice and for opening up additional influences for the classes that I teach - by illustrating how to create a very internal yoga practice where the experience is not just about doing the postures but about the changes the postures may facilitate.
The book is accessible for a wide audience, firmly rooted in anatomy and physiology but not overly technical, and shedding light on the overlay of spirituality and energetics that imbue yoga practice. The author’s grasp of the material leaps off every page.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book we can breatheReviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 19 December 2020

I am lucky enough to know James Foulkes. This truly gifted man is my favorite yoga instructor and one of my Qigong and martial arts instructors (and I am very demanding!). His book is like his yoga classes: mindful, slow, highly meditative, relaxing, regenerating, healing and awareness raising. Impactful in such a positive way! It says what is necessary, and also what is sufficient. The page layout, fonts and illustrations are part of the whole reading experience: you can breathe this book or sip it slowly ... and do that again and again ... and grow more in wisdom. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in growing up, cleaning up, waking up and showing up (as Ken Wilber says).

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for students and teachersReviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 29 October 2017

This book discusses the principles underlying the practice of yoga in 15 short chapters. Each chapter presents a different theme, discusses how it relates to physical and mental health, and ends with a series of postures that encourages the reader to play with the theme in practice. The writing is clear and easy to follow. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the importance learning to listen to one's body and to feel the internal effects of the postures and breath. Because of this emphasis, the book provides a simple yet powerful way for students of yoga to deepen their practice. At the same time, the book provides yoga teachers and yoga therapists with practical ideas for ways to help their students connect more fully with their bodies. The book ends with 7 additional chapters with further guidance for yoga therapists. On my first read-through I found this book to be an inspiring, insightful guide and I expect that I will learn more each time I return to it.
