In 1959 the scientist-novelist C.P. Snow (1905-1972) delivered his famous Rede Lecture at Cambridge, published as The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution. His identification of a deep and dangerous divide between the sciences and the humanities has persisted, evoked more recently in the "culture wars" and "science wars."
